Maybe I just didn't get it but I didn't like The Life Aquatic at all. I tried, really I did. I love Bill Murray and I loved the Royal Tenenbaums and it was pretty, oh so pretty in the shorts... but such a horrid pile of mishmashed shit.

Saw This Is Spinal Tap a while ago just because it's a classic and one of those things that you feel obligated to watch at some point in your life. There was a lot of trainspotting as far as the actors were concerned [why the fuck hasn't Fran Drescher aged in 20 years?] and the sort of subtle humour which I love. I think some of its poignancy has faded with time [although true critics may disagree] but it's still definitely worth seeing.

Watched Spun too. I think my boyfriend appreciated its take on the shab-addicted lifestyle more than I did. Meh, I think I'm just really over drug movies.

The Pacifier is a nice lite hearted comedy, that shows the Vin Diesel can do more then just be the hero/bad guy. He play's a navy seal thats job is to protect 5 kids, who's father he witnessed dying.

I, too, saw Wedding Crashers and I just loved it. I thought it was charming and a little bit quirky, and it made me laugh. That's enough for me :)

And I disagree with Garden State being corny. It might be the fact that I deal with mental illness on a daily basis, but it really struck a chord with me. When they did that thing on the tractor, I cried.

Wedding Crashers: Most definitely the best movie Ive seen all year! I chuckled the whole way through.. (damn i have a feeling ive posted this somewhere before.. so i apologise in advance)
GO SEE IT!!!!! yayayayayaya

it definitely appeals to a certain demographic, but it's not bad for a first film, not bad at all. many have criticized the ending, but in the context of modern cinema, it would have been more of a cliche to end the film in the way we all assumed it would end.

I saw Life Aquatic today and loved it.

bizarre. subtle. unexpected.

I was cracking up at it. When they were all in 1960's diver's uniforms storming the tsunami damaged hotel... getting a glock... the deliberately crappy CGI on certain effects, the guitar playing black guy, the pirate dropping his machete onto the work experience kid..

I don't know... I can see how a lot of people would not like it but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Was expecting a hell of a lot more, seeing as though my brother raved on about it

I'll have to watch it again to give a more detailed post.

Sin City - awesome. they went after a unique visual style and painted their protagonists with corrupt morals and they nailed it. pity it takes balls of steel to be original in holywood 8.5/10 8o

Kung Fu Hustle - Lots of fun (in the whacky sometimes lame hong kong cinema way) and extremely well coriagraphed action. I'd still prefer Shoulin Soccer tho. 7/10 ;)

Constantine - Its a shame the matrix has (forever?) put its thumb print on Keanu. I really enjoyed this movie. Classic 'heros journey' stuff, cool effects and occult fun in an internally consistent universe. 8/10 %)

War of the Worlds - Some people seemed to like it. I was just left underwealmed by the same ol formula. the whole 'shaky cam' got old real fast for me. meh. 5/10 :|

Fantastic 4 - Love the comic driven movies; there is some really good stuff kicking around out there. This just came of 'me too'ish. They filled most of it with dialogue (not action), which I dont have an issue with if there is drama not just anecdotes. It was like they wanted to evolve believeable super heros (cf. Unbreakable with bruce willis) but missed completly. 4/10 :p

Fight Club - Movie of the decade =D

I've seen Wallace and Grommet, I soooo loved it, but I must admitt I am i be biased, cause I've loved them very much since they started.
It was pulled off well, I successful claymation series turned into feature length without loosing anything whatsoever!

A must see for all fans!

I saw this on the weekend too. I'm with you - I don't know quite what to say about it.

It is really quite bizarre. Very Tim Burton. It's almost too creepy and dark for kids, I think. Think: Edward Scissorhands in terms of the "feel" of it.

Still, I thought Johnny Depp did a magnificent job - taking Wonka right into another stratosphere, so far away from Wilder's original character it's not funny.

There were a few laughs - for example Wonka's mission to Oompa Land, in which Depp looks and sounds VERY much like his Hunter S. Thompson character - but the whole movie could have done with some lightening up, I think. It was like the tail end of a bad acid trip.

And the Oompa Loompas were just FREAKY... nasty, evil little buggers. They're enough to give you nightmares! *shudder* It's just all round a bit of a mystery really why this is a kid's film. Good special effects, great Johnny Depp - creepy film.

garden state
loved garden state; great soundtrack; thievery corporation, the shins... etc all the small stories ties into eachother with ease; you can watch it from start to finish without alot of high concern; (the fact that it doesn't dwell too much gives it just the right definition) it's the small details is what makes the movie; natalie portman's quirks, the last scene *spoiler*... how the light surrounds them when they kiss during the final scene.. etc, the fastfood knight in the kitchen... zack braff with "balls" within on his forehead, the cinematography is incredible; there are some beautifully lit scenes; the swimming pool, the mansions fireplace... etc

the extras are okay, but nothing special... theres a doco, but not really that interesting, the audio commentary kind of lets down the dvd a little; there's insight, but it doesn't actually make the movie anybetter than what it already is... worth a rent, buy it for the rerun capacity...

sideways
didn't want to like this movie because of all the hype, but actually love this film, have watched it over and over, bare with me while i use a wine analogy; it gets better with age... :P (i'll stop now..) paul giamatti is loveable as miles, and i hated thomas hayden church alot less than i usually do.... (him and kevin bacon; i don't think there at all attractive, don't deserve all the groupie attention). the girls in the movie aren't utilized much, the scene is basically built around what miles does alone; his contradicting, and understandable reactions...

charlie and the chocolate factory
LOVED THIS MOVIE... johnny depp is fantastsic as overly chipper, emotionally stunted willy wonka; extremely dark (very much what i expected from a burton film)... i liked the backstory of it, there are some wonderful scenes with wonka just fading into a *flashback*... "pa pa?"

the kids are wildly annoying, grampa george is fan-f*cking-tastic; with his predictions on who'll win, etc, love his smugness when he's dead on. liked that they added scenes involving the glass elevator during the tour (the old movie didn't include it, until during the last scene, which confused me a little...) noah taylor and helena boham carter are the perfect fit as charlie's parents...

loved the vived color; can't wait until i can get my grubby hands on the DVD with the complete extras!

the life aquatic w/ steven zissou
im on the same wavelength as the people already posted; soo wanted to love this movie; and i loved some scenes the 70s-style-shooting (how bill murray is able to avoid almost every rapid gunfire in his direction), owen wilson's voice-over (reading his childhood letter etc)... but for the most part, the movie lulled; Royal Tenenbaums was so full of life, so full of tiny details... which the life aquatic does have... it's just misses it mark... worth one watch, try to see it with a open mind...

Brides

I went and saw this around at the local Palace last night to escape my family. It's about young Greek and Russian women in the 20s who were sent off to North America to marry men they'd only seen photographs of. Some of them were as young as 13 and 14.

The idea was very interesting, and the detail in the movie was wonderful. Unfortunately, I felt it was ruined by a strange, unnecessary love story between two people with no chemistry that then eventuated in nothing.

There were a couple of storylines that could have been powerful and intruiging, but they weren't explored because of the silly aforementioned love story. Sadly, that also dragged the end of the movie out about 10 minutes longer than it should have been, which is always frustrating.

In short, I'm glad I saw it and I think I learned a thing or two, but it should have been more of a documentary and less of a soapie.

6/10!

Tomorrow I'm going to go and see Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, so I'll be back.

The magician

Funded, written, directed and starring Melbournite Scott Ryan as a hitman who is accompanied by a documentary maker.

The main characters force of personality as the no fuss, brutal but awkward tough guy made the movie for me.

If you like jarring reality sprinkled with black comedy then Id give it a go.
Really reminded me of Man bites dog which had a similar concept & feel to it (a must see for extreme black comedy buffs)

Extra points for the style of humour, shoestring budget, originality, being ozzie, and Scotts acting.
7/10

^^^

man bites dog. first thing i thought of when i saw the review of this on the movie show the other day, and i tuned in halfway through the segment yet it took me 5 seconds to work out what the film was about. i don't care though, nothing is original anymore, and it sounds/looks good.

Evil Dead 2
'it's really good hunny, the first one is heaps scary, the third one is heaps funny, this one is the perfect combination'
no. it's just shit.

Crash

Its not just another story when everyones path crosses in some stupid way. This is a very well written story, that grabs you by the neck and draws you in. This is a very thought provocing, racially motivated drama with a great cast of actors. It's a very fresh look at a basic story line that has been tried before.

Its gone up as one of my favs for the year, 9/10
