I understand people’s reticence to talk to the media, but I'm not working on a three hour deadline; We're making an hour long documentary for BBC 3 and we have a few months to really investigate the legal high landscape on order to make a fair, balanced and accurate film.
We have plenty of time to gather opinions from all direction – the government, users, retailers, health professionals etc on both sides of the debate.
There are no preconceived notions, no angle that we’re trying to work. We just want to be able to have an honest and open discussion.
The point is that we make a balanced film that puts across all the info for our viewers so they can make up their own minds about any legal highs they might come across, particularly at this year’s festival season.
The key for me is to remain objective and ask the sorts of questions that people want answered, i.e. what’s in these things? Do they work? Why would the government want to ban them? Do they offer drug users a way to enjoy themselves without being criminalised? Does legal mean safe? Etc.
