Over seas and sands, the music could be heard, felt and pulsated through his blood. From a young age, Sharif Galal was fiercely passionate about music. It started with his prized possession, a short wave radio. The tiny transmitter picked up the sounds of the BBC which brought the world and its diversity to his home in Alexandria Egypt. Growing up in a British Boarding school he was heavily influenced by the sounds and growing music scene emanating from the UK. Being a card carrying member of the ABC (Alexandria British Community) it seems destiny had its hand in crafting Sharifs future career as radio presenter at the "other" ABC (Australian Broadcast Commission).
In 85 he landed his first Djing gig at the only nightclub in Alexandria "Georges" and was later employed by Radio Cairo (1986) as an on air English presenter which beamed through out greater Europe and UK. His shows featured a unique blend of middle eastern sounds combined with the new wave pop music of the UK. After a small taste of the impending western culture, Sharif went in search of greater heights moving to the UK in 87 playing a number of parties and immersing himself in London's bristling music culture.
By 88 he would move to Melbourne Australia picking up DJ residencies at The Grainstore, Inflation, the Royal Derby and then holding a two year stint at The Metro. Not content with just being a DJ, Sharif tried his hand at journalism forming the first dance column in Beat Magazine and in 89 combining his vast experience back into radio on 3RRR. While in studying at Melbourne University Sharif realised the growing club culture and saw a need for university held dance parties / discos. Melbourne was growing too small for him.
With his degree almost finished, the bigger smoke was calling and in 93 he picked up and moved to Sydney immediately finding his way into the clubs, landing gigs and starting his own club night "Sub Club" at Kinselas. To fuel his appetite for new music, Sharif in 1994 landed a gig at WEA as their dance music consultant and held the position on guiding the major label through the dance music industry for 2 years. As his tenure was coming to a close, never complacent, Sharif sourced and landed a spot at SBS TV as a researcher for Nomad, before joining SBS Radio as a jurno and broadcaster with his own hourly show. Full of ideas, he was instrumental in laying the foundations for a specialist music program for the younger audience that SBS was lacking. His ideas and creative input would eventually evolve into Alchemy for SBS Radio, which then morphed into Alchemy for SBS TV.
With his growing involvement in the dance music industry and a startling dj set on a new program with the national broadcaster (Triple J's Mix Up) he was eventually poached by Triple J in 95 to fill the specialist dance show spot left by the departing Andy Giltre. The Groove Train was born !
The Groove Train continues to this day to be one of the longest weekly specialist show on Triple J with an estimated audience of 100,000 plus and growing, worldwide. It is a great mix of sounds which highlights the diversity that encompasses the vague genre of dance music.
An important facet to the success of his show is Sharif's love of Djing. In the many years he has played Australia wide at Big Day Out, Livid, Offshore, Falls, Vibes on a Tropical Day, Mobile Home, Smut, Crank Parties @ Jindabyne, Room Nightclub, Sunday School, One Love, Revolver, Chinese Laundry, Slip Inn, Good Vibrations, Q Bar, Beach Rd Hotel, Family, GPO, Monastery, Viva, My Bar, Verve, Ambar, Redheads, Minke Bar – while also having his hand at production completing a remix in the late 90's for DIG "Upside (smoking goat remix)" (EMI), Mix CD Vol. 1 (ABC / Universal Music), as well providing his extensive music knowledge for hire as a freelance compilation consultant for BMG Australia.
