[Melb/QLD] Earthcore Global Carnival 2006 - REVIEWS!!

Review

Earthcore Crew - You need to take a good hard look at yourself and your setup...

In particular - the following two key areas:

First - WTF - Where was GMS? I understand that some things are beyond your control - but there should have been at least a notification that GMS had cancelled. Now, I understand the clause - "Acts can charge without warning." You can basically bill anyone and then not be held accountable if they don't show up.

Now according to the 'official' message that was broadcasted during the John OO Fleming set - GMS refused or missed their Flight and therefore could not arrive.

Now, I spoke to a few people and some individuals had mentioned that GMS had notified Earthcore events 3 weeks prior to the festival... If this is the case, why the hell weren't we informed?

Considering Earthcore managed to have someone from Belgium I believe come and play the event - I assume that some planning would have had to take place to get her down here. (Booking flights, potentially gaining visa - i'm sure this was more than 1 or 2 days worth of work... Unless of course you are willing to tell me she just happened to be holidaying in Melbourne or surrounding area - had informed you she was here, and you just happened to need to fill a spot... Pity I didn't get a chance to speak to her and ask her how long ago was she approached for this set.)

What made this worse - was the up until 1 1/2 hours before GMS was supposed to play - prior to this there was no communication that GMS had pulled out (but I guess you were giving GMS every opportunity to show). Yeah right - what a joke.

Considering GMS is the backbone of 1200 mics - It was a shame to see Raja and Chicago trying to mix music, play instruments and dance/entertain all at once. Hats off to those old rockers... but there was a certain edge that was missing.

Second - Where the fcuk were the lasers? We pay up to 150 dollars and you can't even put in lasers? This was an absolute disgrace. Talk about cutting your costs.

What is going to happen next year? You cut back the speakers?

On a positive - the Hydra floor was brilliant and all Djs/Performers did an excellent job to produce a high energy event.

Michael Mayer rocked as usual - pity I only got to see an hour of his set before I headed home.

Michael Mayer rocks! Nothing new there with EC not pulling up to standards, but oh well it's to be expected now I guess. :\

Can someone else do a review please? You should all be getting home soon, and I want a few more reports. Just for the record my w'end wasn't that great, but that wasn't because I wasn't at EC. ;)

Yes - drug dogs and police were out. I think the police did a fairly good job of just being there and not getting too involved.

I did see them arrest 2 people (they were in handcuffs - and one guy was begging not to go to jail) - and i saw them catch a few people (all they seemed to do was take their names and numbers down - probably just a fine i guess).

Considering how much drug use there was... I think the police just made the drug use not so blatant.

Yes - Michael Mayer rocks - Wish I could see him this Friday - 4 hour set!!!

BTW - Earthcore Crew - Considering GMS did not make the Melbourne show are you going to send out an email notifying the QLD people that GMS wont be showing? Or do you expect them to catch a plane this time? Or will you conveniently forget this and tell people 1 1/2 hour before they are supposed to show?

Ok - On a positive note -

The music was great!!

The highlights -

1. Tsuyoshi Suzuki - He rocks so much. As he was playing a morning set he didn't play his normal 'metalic edged' psy... but it was still funky and pumping!

2. Siaqua - Mr Horse/Lep - You guys rock. This was the 2nd time I've seen you play and you both had a lot of energy about you. Was really really impressed!!!

3. The woman who replaced GMS - Brilliant! I totally loved her set.

4. Sirius Isness - Absolutely one of the key highlights! They both worked the crowd beautifully and their energy was amazing. Would love to see them again!!

5. Michael Mayer - Can't say much about this guy... Just AMAZING!!!!! As I now live in QLD i'm thinking about going up just to see him play...

well i had a ball.
the people were amazing, the river, the weather. the vibe in general was beautiful and friendly. i ran into long lost friends, i met new people who were friendly and open, i danced, i chilled out and had a great weekend...

but..

it REALLY sucked that the 3 main acts - Eskimo, gms and 1200 mics did not play. whether they missed their planes/deliberately got trashed and did a no show or ec cancelled them 3 weeks prior it sucks that the main reason i got my ticket to a MUSIC festival was not there.

i got to see siaqua play insread and THEY WERE FARKING BRILLIANT! utter utter madness set.."800 mics" - chicago and raja were also great given the less that ideal circumstances. i LOVE eskimo though and was really looking forward to that highlight. so boo for whatever reason. somehow i doubt the truth will come out - there is nothing on the ec site so far.

i hope everyone picked up their rubbish.

^ I doubt it. We cleaned our campsite but there was so much shit left.

Fuck you Spiro. That's all i've got to see regarding the aforementioned qualms.

I had a great time nevertheless, met several great kids from here.
My meet up time and spot for Mantrix was a bad one. I was the guy with the cowboy had dancing up the front.

THE CORE WAS AWESOME!! :)
Had an absolute mad time! GMS not showing up was pretty dissapointing since that was the first act I expected to see and arrived only to hear the bad news :(
1200mics (Raja) still rocked the floor! My head was buzzing so hard when they played Money for Nothing, loved that extended bit!

The heat was so bad on the Saturday, my crew just sat in the river for 2hrs - even the caravan we brought up couldn't deal with that blistering sun.

No trees was also a bit dissapointing.. Earthcore is missing a fundemental element if you can't camp in the trees :(
Where the fcuk were the lasers?
They were at the G.O.D stage, and I can assure you there were heaps of em!

Final thing, I was rocking until the very end of the official tunes - 3:30pm sun - and there was an announcement that this earthcore was to be the last due to public liability and other pressures :( Anyone else confirm this? I was pretty tired by this point and may have heard wrong... (I hope)

Can see some things never changed. People still complaining about how Spiro (mainly)/Earthcore run their events. It's happened so so so many times that names on fliers weren't even notified they were playing or cancelled and EC 'forgot' to tell the punters beforehand and all sorts of assorted crap. It will keep happening as long as EC put events on so the only way to combat it is either expect it or don't go to their events so they don't get your $$$$.

Past couple years rumours have been 'last earthcore' just like the last 10 'last kryals'. Funny :D :D :D

If it is the last E/C, oh well, it opens up the door for better (read: at least somewhat more honest to a point) promoters to get big name Psy acts into Oz. I'm still enjoying Rainbow each year + LOTS of smaller real doofs which are 10000 times more fun anyway to attend :)

^ Agreed. If there's one thing i love about a bush doof it's lasers in trees. The lasers this year were lame. There was one on the GOD & main stage but they were pathetic compared to previous years.

What's more, i made a post on the earthcore forum and Spiro removed it and also edited the post i was replying to (he toned it way down). Just because we were critical of Eskimo, GMS and 1200 mics not playing. WTF?!? we can't express our opinions? The beauty of the net is that free speech rules. So fuck you Spiro for disabling my account and removing my post. Here's my post again here if anyone's interested (try removing this one arsehole):

===================

Like a lot of people, i was bitterly disappointed that Eskimo & GMS weren't playing as they were a large part of the reason i went. I still had a great time. But musically, Earthcore just didn't really do it for me this year.

If it turns out that Spiro knew Eskimo wasn't coming 3 weeks ago (the rumour i heard many times) but kept him on the billing, how can we trust the line up next time? (if there is a next time)

I had the feeling it might have been the last earthcore on the w/end, even before reading Sprio's thread (on the earthcore forum). There didn't seem as many people as the last 2 years and it also seemed that discounted tickets were sold for longer than in the past. My conspiray theory is that ticket sales were low this year but they had to keep promoting the big names to drive sales. Pulling Eskimo would have been even more disastrous.

As much as i enjoyed my previous Earthcore's, i've just lost faith and will be sticking to Rainbow & Akasha from now.

word

- you know I really hate to say "I told you so" - actually no wait.... "i told you so!" =D I get pissed on and attacked when i talk about not supporting EC events and this thread review just shows WHY I don't support any event that spiro puts on.....

once again "I told you so!"

save your money for rainbow!!!!

flame away..... ;)

Fuck you spiro - you take the cock.

Thankyou to fatali for playing a truly awesome set and making sure the weekend wasn't a total write off.

Fuck you spiro - you take the cock.

Thankyou to mean girl, katmeow, ozbreaka, pop popavich, supadiscobreaka, belisimo and psycosynthesis for making my camp bearable.

Fuck you spiro - you take the cock.

Props to wazza and doofy - guess I just had to learn for myself.

Dude - You can't call them lasers.. What about those monster fuck off lasers that use to to go through the trees and touch the tips of heaven!

Seriously - the main stage even had that top bit of that pymarid with that black opening as if they had planned to have lasers come through it and then pulled out at the last minute...

Rainbow Serpent you are the last true festival.

F

The G.O.D stage had 2 lasers and they looked awesome, but I agree, I was very disappointed with the lack of lasers in this years setup.

Last year was my first earthcore, and the things I loved the most was the circus acts in the big top, and the awesome laser show on main stage and the side stage where hydra was.

I'll confirm that Eskimo did not play, and having 1200 mics not play was a disappointment as they were one of the acts I really wanted to see..

on that note mark eg was insane!!! =D

numanoid set on sunday morning in 333 was my biggest highlight, oh and the stars in the sky at night;) i swear there were lasers up there;)

Why am I trying to convince my friends to come over for next years EC? :X
Fuck that, I'll get them to go to Rainbow instead, it's much better.

Sounds like it's getting worse by the year. :\
