Megaupload shut down

Yeah, I'll have one of those invites too! If there are any going. I seed at least 2x what I DL cos I'm not a tosser! I understand that I just downloaded from someone who didn't kill the torrent as soon as it hit 100%!
Is that aimed at me? ;) On a private tracker, I'd happily seed, if there's no chance of my IP being seen. No one has answered whether it's possible to still see people's IPs, on private trackers. I'm pretty sure I can see them, when I use thebox.bz, etc. What would stop a member of, say, Sony Entertainment signing up/paying for a membership and then busting all the IPs on the private tracker? How private is it?

you can't see other people's IP through info at the box. it's only viewable to you

the only way you can see other people's ip to the best of my knowledge is if youre downloading the same file and via the info on your client settings :ie your utorrent

could be wrong though

I'm sure they could get an invite from a forum, like these people are doing. How do you know they don't work for some anti-piracy company? It sounds a lot more secure, but it's still not risk free. If you use torrents, I'd say you always have a chance of being caught. A chance I'm willing to take. Ha.

Nothing to stop them, if they have access to the same private tracker as you they can use the same software and techniques to gather the same intel they get from public trackers.

not hard to imagine the anti piracy firms having much better systems/software in place for such things and its not exactly hard to get access to private trackers.

It says they have no records for me. I'm not sure how that system works, but it doesn't work too well!

Nah, not aimed at you! More at some of my mates who laugh about stopping people from downloading from them whilst they're downloading from other people at the same time! Are you really that worried about them coming after you? Use a proxy if you are. I suppose I have a certain level of protection from the fact I 'use a proxy' too (sort of, that'll do for a public forum)!

It says I downloaded charlies Angels, ha, as if! And that's it.

I seen a programme a bit ago about some company in Europe tracking folk downloading torrents and resolving their location using their IP. As your IP changes though, it's a bit shit IMO.

No, I'm not bothered in the slightest. I was just trying to establish whether private trackers offer more protection. Not really, seems to be the consensous. Not even had a warning, and I've used them for years and years.

I have never downloaded anything according to that.

ip change? not for a lot of providers it doesn't. virgin definitely doesn't. only occasionally. depends on the router, but it doesn't do it for the vast majority as far as my experience with em goes.

when I want my ip changing I have to force do it by changing the mac address on the router. I try n do it at least a coupla times a week. used to do it daily

Lol at "We have no records of you". I've downloaded fucking hunners of shit!! Seeing as your IP will normally change every time your router gets switched off though it's hardly a reliable check.

ya in practice it works fairly turd because of dynamic IPs which is what most residential internet users are on, its only useful to see what kind of information can be taken from bit torrent trackers

the record companies will have something much much better :D

Most/All ISPs will address IPs dynamically, some ISPs have the option to get a static IP but you usually have to pay. Virgin uses dynamic IPs as well, but they have a bigger pool of available IPs than users, once the number of users exceeds the number of IP address's in the pool they have to start dynamically allocating the IP address's to the users online at any one time resulting in users getting a different IPs

Yup, if you reboot the router you'll be issued with a new IP.. in rare circumstances you may be given the same IP that you just had because no one else has taken it while you were offline and it was reissued to you again.

the new virgin routers [all in one modem and router] and the older ones never do this for us here. I can reboot it 10 times and it still comes back with the same ip. this is going back years too

even if you ring up virgin tech support, they'll say to do exactly the same and to reboot/reboot switch off for an hour and that you might get a new ip that way, but it never ever works. not just at my addy either. my sisters too

RE: vermin - My IP changes, do an IPCONFIG /all and then reset, do it again. I believe that is why that website says I DL'd Charlies Angels - someone else did and I now have their IP. I feel sorry for the dude who has my past IP's!!

Anyway, forget SOPA, ACTA is a fuckload worse. It's been drawn up in secret and is now gonna be voted on by the EU. If it goes thru then we're all fucked, forget about the internet as you currently know it. It'll be more like going to the high street but with the odd campaigner on the corner removed.

on my last router, that's the way I managed to change my IP .. config/release/renew etc in the middle of switching it on and off again. was a pain in the arse, but it would change it after fiddling.

My Sky IP changes every time I reboot my router, just for the record, Crackhead.
