The Big Question - Cat v's Dog

in this case it would be breaking the law if the vet put him down without evaluation....

Exactly. The law says that the dog can't be euthanized unless the behavioral evaluation determines that it is necessary. Therefore, doing otherwise would be breaking the law. I would think that you of all people would understand that, Johnny. :\

I don't think the word "euthanasia" is used properly in that context either. Euthanasia implies that ending the dogs life is done as an act of mercy to save it from the pain of an illness or injury. Killing the dog because one doesn't like it's behavior isn't saving it from injury or sickness, it's getting it out of the way because you don't want to have to deal with it. It's not an act of mercy.

Hi - sorry for the delay, I imagine it would be fine, and a very good idea. But sooner rather than later, and its worth explaining to the store incase they don't get on and you have to return the newer one. I think you almost owe it to pig1 to get him a friend - it will be a very lonely life for him if you don't. Good on you :) <3

Dogs and small children don't mix. You really can't let one near the other and turn your back for even a second. I would suggest either finding the dog a new home (a real home with a caring family, not leaving it at an animal shelter to be gassed), or taking steps to keep the dog and the kid separate. It's not the animal's fault, it just acts on instinct.

QFT.

Kids make fast movements and don't know not to do things like poke a dog in the eye.

The important thing here is that you make a decision that is right for you and your family (this includes the dog). I don’t think there is really a wrong answer here; almost all the posts here have some merit. I thing you need to do what’s right for you. I wish you luck.

luckily cats just aint gotta whole lotta ass kickin skills outside of small rodents/etc...

i had some pretty nasty cat bites and scratches when i was a kid..... by our mane coon...nothing as serious as this situation tho....the emergency doc told me they get a lot more cat bites and scratches than dog bites....so, apparently cats can be pretty viscious too...

My cat used to chase dogs down the street.. he just teased all the dogs on leads and wound them up lmao

Labrador's are awesome dogs, give the baby away and get a second one ;)

But really, all this its one or the other is total bullshite. If the love and the care is there you'll manage keeping both of them fine. You seem like a rational person based on how you're dealing with this and peoples responses and imo unlikely to decide to kill your dog based on some forum posts.

Too tired to read all the replies and hope this reply even makes sense, but no one here but you can understand all the variables involved in the situation and the best solution to it. Guess its helps to vent it somewhere though.

Recommend going for the dog gate idea, make sure to get one that you can fasten to the wall nicely though as well rather, then just a standing sort of gate that can be knocked around. Has worked well for me

hi alicat let us all no how the vet meeting went today wen u get bk. A lot of ppl care hence the emotional response u'v received. All that counts is what you want to do in ur Heart you no ur truth. I get that harry maybe has smg wrong with his ears? ur baby girl may tweak or poke in them in play and if not this time it may just have bin frightening for him anticipating that she wud! That's wen my cats and dogs usu docile and v lovin have snapped or bitten me wen they're in pain or protecting against it.

Abandoned Baby Found Safe With Dog

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - A newborn baby abandoned outdoors in winter by her 14-year-old mother was found safe in a dog pen with a mother dog and her brood of puppies near the city of La Plata, Argentine media reported on Friday.

Farmer Fabio Anze found the naked baby girl on Thursday, being kept warm among his dog China's puppies, La Nacion newspaper said. Anze called the police and the baby was taken to a hospital.

Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero hospital, told television and newspaper reporters that the baby was just a few hours old when she was found, and was in good health although she had some bruises.

Nighttime temperatures are chilly but not freezing in the Southern Hemisphere winter in the rural area around La Plata, 40 miles south of Buenos Aires.

Police said they had located the 14-year-old girl who gave birth to the baby outdoors during the night.

It was not clear whether the mother left her baby in the dog's pen or whether the dog found the baby outdoors and carried it in to join her puppies.

ChemicalSmile-
i am so sorry. when i lost my first dog (he was 7 too), i was devastated....

how are you feeling?

alright folks-

here goes.....

harry's vet said that he was deemed to be a dog who IS NOT aggressive....she also said that she was shocked to hear he did what he did....

all thru the exam he was submissive and everything proved to be fine with his ears and other health checks...

she also said that in her opinion, harry saw the baby as a puppy and a submissive one....she thought that maybe since amelie had only been crawling a short time that harry was a bit spooked by her being on the floor and moving quite fast as compared to her always being carried around previously...there are two facets to that....before she was above him when being held, then suddenly she is on the floor and moving around on all fours(like a puppy)...

that's the jist of it....i wanted to fill you all in before we go to bed....

i'm sure i will think of more info to post tomorrow....

Yep just what I thought Alpha dog dominance. There’s always a pecking order in the animal world:)

A friend of mine tonight told me that she has heard many times that no baby can be left around a dog without close supervision because dogs have a tendency to attack babies, for whatever reason.

Following this thread caused me to do more research and I have found the same information. This is more common than I thought. It has to do with dominance and pecking order issues. I lost track of the link (damn) but I read that dogs will sometimes attack infants or toddlers left too close to them. Its more of a warning than an attack. It rarely escalates to a full blown attack. If it had escalated, the outcome would have been much worse.

Please keep baby and the dog separate now, at least until the child is old enough to tell the dog off and give it a slap if it has to.

I would not like to hear of either coming to harm.
