CS, why didn't you ask us for help? Pander is unemployed and I only work three days a week. We just got a new addition to our household now that you mention it -- our new roommate brought in a giant chocolate pitbull. Make Pander take all the dogs to the dog park a couple days a week or something. And then you're forced to hang out with us because we take care of your fucking dog.

<3

so, i'm going against the majority. sort of. (i'm under the impression you'll adopt a pup that needs a home, if you're planning to buy one from a puppy mill or breeder, i retract my advice below.)

while it's true puppies have pretty big needs and your schedule isn't ideal, i think the biggest need for a shelter puppy is to find a loving home. which animal is going to have a better life: the one that has another pooch to play with and a somewhat limited but positive relationship with its owner or the one cooped-up in a tiny, cold pen hoping to be adopted but likely being euthanized?

it looks like Keni and Pander are graciously willing to help out and you could always locate a reputable pet sitter in times of emergencies.

edit: i know you mentioned you were a little hesitant about rescuing a dog, but no-kill shelters ensure the animal is friendly and adoptable and offer a no-questions-asked policy if the adoption isn't working out.

moar like Keni is totally willing to help and Pander will come around later :| ;)

but seriously, it would be a great excuse for me to get on my bike more than i do, and playing with a dog for an hour or so isn't bad.

another dog would be good for you. :)

I am a "pet groomer", I grew up showing dogs (working with professional handlers). That turned into an ever-loving career with pets. Even if toward the end of my "meth years" I "tweaked my own show dogs away".... (FUCK I am crying, I starved one).... Nevermind that's for a blog, or a different thread...

Regaining myself after the "meth habit", I "refound" my passion/compassion for pets, and kids (as a mommy to 3 "human" kids, 4 "unhuman" kids) Please DO NOT get a puppy unless you have enough time to dedicate to him/her. I mean 100% dedication.

I am the person who has to deal with the "ungroomed" dogs, the kitties so knotted, and matted I send them off to the local vet. These 1.5 yr old dogs that have never been out of their own back yard.

Please think of the "little furry ones" before you go to the mall, and see one in the window. They are living too...

I am not even an animal rights person, green peace, Hell, I'm not even vegetarian.... If you knew where these puppies come from... No matter what you "believe" any rational human being would not think this was fair...

SORRY... TOUCHES a HEARTSTRING....

Yay for puppies!!

I agree with Fawkes on this one, especially if you can leave the puppy at home with the lab you already have. Just put down some newspaper, and be prepared to clean up pee every night when you come home.

Dogs bring so much joy and companionship to your life, I totally understand why you are aching for another one <3

i like saying, "i want a puppy". it makes me feel like i'm 5.

i don't want a cat.
i don't want a bird.
i don't want a hamster.
i don't want a fish.
i don't want a girlfriend.

i want a fucking puppy.

haha me too, and i got one and im sorta scared that im gonna be a terrible mom. but all anyone heard for two months was I WANT PUPPY

Holy shit little guy, would you like my soul? you can has it. Goddamn that guy is cute

^ That is my puppy, Penny, when we first got her. Most adorable thing I have ever seen with my own eyes.

Alasdair - I simultaneously agree and disagree with your statement. Sure, dogs need attention and love, and need necessary care such as feeding, walking, and being let out to go to the bathroom, but essentially all dogs do is lay around. Depending on the kind of dog, ten hours might be way too long, but I don't think that necessarily applies to all dogs.

i fucking love this thread now.

i think i'm gonna get a springer spaniel. but not till spring, since the days are longer.

gun-ner!
my friend has a dog just like this that im so attached to (chocolate lab)
he's such a big, floppy mess of a flops and i lerve him entirely
he's always the one to flop along when i venture picture taking at camp times and splash me with creek stuffs

what fawkes said makes more sense than pretending to know what would make dogs mentally balanced. i would get the puppy. i would get a puppy now if my lease didnt say something against it. i want a puppy dammit :(

yea, he's a hawt mess of floppy. i fucking lub him so much that it's stupid.

that dog has probably been to more places and climbed more mountains than most people.

i haz a sad watching him slow down, but he is sweeter than ever.

i got him when he was a puppy.

i'd be totally down with rescuing a dog, and actually plan on rescuing a bunch at some point. But i live in a small two bedroom house in downtown atlanta and don't have much space. thus, i'm being selfish and want to get a pure bread puppy for my next doggie.

once my dream of moving to the mountains comes true, i'll start rescuing dogs.

AWWW SHIT NIGGA

I haven't had an aquarium in a while but I'll drop some of my old pics. Camera wasn't so great, but I think I had some great tanks. (the seahorses and mantis shrimp died sadly. It crushed me. I gave the pipefish to a fellow aquarist, I think they are still alive. They were a breeding couple.)

And of course, finally, my girl Cindy. Her death hit me the hardest, she had so much personality. Literally crushed me. I think my tanks may have had a heavy metal contamination. All my shrimp died during a molt and snails were short lived. Soft corals didn't have much trouble though, hard to say. Maybe I'm just unlucky...

Sweet!

Man you kept all the cool stuff you can possibly put in a 10 gallon tank. Sorry to hear about your mantis. I don't think anyone here understands just how cool those muhfuggahs are. Definitely sounds like a possible copper situation if all other parameters were normal. Were you able to keep the jawfish from jumping out? I had a bluespot jawfish that went carpet-surfing. FAIL.

:D

The jawfish weren't bad at all with the jumping. There was a point where the tank parameters spiked and they had some sort of disease, looked like SW ick. After the one on the right went the smaller one took a turn for the worse and died a couple days later. I later got one in my 65 gallon hex where I had the seahorses but he ended up on the floor. That really surprised me, seems like jumping would be a way larger issue in a 10 gallon than a 65 gallon.

If you can get a hold of some proper ammonium, not just windex (NH4OH, greater than 10% concentration ideally), mix some of the aquarium water with ammonium-- in a well-ventilated place of course-- and if there is a blue colouration you have a significant copper contamination. Detection limit is in the order of the hundreds of ppm, but that would tell you if you have a severe contamination.

Seahorses, from what I've heard, are incredibly hard to keep in captivity. I'm very impressed to see them in a hobbyist tank-- apparently even institutional aquaria have trouble keeping them alive.
