Mass Shooting and Gun Control Megathread

damn...what's going on with France and Norway? Less people than us but almost just as many gun deaths this year!
Right? Wtf. France is nearly 4x the deaths per million as the U.S. That's crazy. These are the rules there:

"To own a gun, you first need to acquire a hunting or sporting licence, and this has to be regularly renewed and requires a psychological evaluation. Applicants with any criminal record are automatically refused."

Idk if more gun control would do anything good. Guns are the same as they were 70 years ago when there weren't lots of school shootings, so something changed in society imo. There are people still alive that lived in a society where you could take your gun to school for the shooting club. So something else besides guns is causing the current issue imo

Yeah I've spoken to a few Americans about it and it's more complex than non-Americans realise. It also depends on the different states I think? Like states in New England are a lot different to ones with "open carry" (Arizona??) where people can sit in a public place with a gun showing. Just WTF at that? I get scared if I see a gun on a cop!!

Yeah, my state just went further than open carry by legalizing constitutional concealed carry, so now I don't even need a permit to carry a concealed pistol.

Why does ANYBODY 'need' an assault weapon unless they're a serving soldier?

I get the whole 'protection' argument, especially those in rural areas that have to deal with grizzly bears etc.

But there is NO argument for allowing the general public access to what are basically weapons of mass destruction.

No doubt the republican answer to this problem will be to hand out guns to elementary school children every morning.

I'm out of here now because this subject just makes my fuckin blood boil.

I can legally open carry, need a permit to conceal tho, criminals conceal their firearms without the proper licensing so I personally find it a little silly that I need a license, but whatever when I carry I typically open carry, the way I see it if someone is going to do something stupid I will be the first target which gives me a disadvantage but everyone els an advantage, so I’m game with that

Oh so open carry is actually "safer"? I thought it was like "hey we love guns so much you don't even have to hide them!" haha.
Safer for YOU, cause if someone is going to commit a crime the guy with the gun on his hip will take the first shots giving you a chance to run and hide, and who knows maybe he’ll even take out the shooter that would have otherwise killed you

It allows you to see that they have a gun.. presumably making it less dangerous then a concealed gun. It kinda makes sense as its probably a deterrent to confrontation and violence as you would realize your entering into a confrontation with an armed person.

When a person has a concealed firearm a combatant may attack then not knowing they have the ability to shoot them. The person carrying a concealed gun could surprise a victim.

There are more states that have permitless concealed carry than a lot of people think. I haven't looked at "safety" = whether pistol shootings are up in those states, but I'm sure politicians would be yelling about it if there was an obvious increase due to laws being passed

oh wow look at that....

i stand corrected - look at Norway over there leading the way

i think the school kids thing is a US thing tho no?
Looks like it.

Once the first one happened it looks like it opened it up for others. They must be attracted to major reactions of society. Must think it makes them something. In reality this guy was just a loser that decided to go into a school and murder children and staff. Nothing amazing, just a loser that bought a gun learned how to load it and then walked into a school and shot children. Gross and pathetic person.

Here's a pretty illuminating chart, that definitely shows a bit of correlation between gun ownerships per capita and gun deaths per capita.
That pretty crazy that the only two non-contiguous states (Hawaii and Alaska) are the least and the most out of all 50 states
