I would rather have a clear name than the money. Among certain circles you would just never shake the nonce label. He will be living in fear for his life from a Sun lynch mob until the day he dies, along with every paediatrician in the country.

Doesn't seem like the BBC can win, does it? They don't run reports on claims that wouldn't stand up in court and they're the bad guys. They run claims that wouldn't stand up in court and it turns out the bloke is more than likely a liar or mentally ill in some way. If they have enough evidence that the person could be convicted they should hand it over to police and keep quiet, if they don't they should keep quiet. The issue is just too toxic. I have no idea how people can be compensated by public bodies, or for that matter anyone, decades after an unverifiable event. This will just open the flood gates.

£135K from the BBC plus an 'undisclosed sum' from 'This Morning' for Lord Macalpine. If anyone wants to tip off the media about the abused schoolgirls in my cellar, feel free.
Depends, though ..... They might find it easier and cheaper just to plant evidence of abused schoolgirls in your cellar and turn the tabloid press on you.

remember michael jackson?
now, yer man mcalpine ' his compo is hardly anything to a man like him is it? it's 2 weeks wages for a good footballer.. there's talk of compo for the ladies. will any of it be near that amount one wonders?

back to jacko...he was very tarnished by those allegations. there were prolly other poeple making allegations about him too that didn't make it to the papers and were just sorted out with a bit of cash.
money talks and bullshit walks

Aha, let them try! Just as Lord M hasn't been to Exeter, I don't have a cellar. I've thought this one through, see.

Mamma mia! So, if you're a broke aristocrat, get a mate to allege you abused him some place you can prove you never visited and wait for the media expose. Then your mate recants and you cash in. Ain't this a great country? Sure this wasn't what happened with Lord M, tho', I hastily add.

Come on Charlie, you're joking? Being fingered and publicly smeared all through the media, top to bottom as a paedophile during one of the great witch-hunting sessions we go through every decade or so is hardly something he can quietly put behind him is it? The money's not much recompense cos even retracted with the causes of any apparent confusion made clear the allegation of being a nonce is one that tends to stick. For the rest of his life whenever his face comes up in public there'll be that 'Oh, Lord McAlpine. Had that liking for young boys thing put about around him a while back' flash of recognition in peoples' minds wherever he goes. The sums may seem large but do they go far enough to offset that? I highly doubt it. Besides, the damages are as much a punishment for the two media organisations who uncritically broke the top Tory toff in establishment paedo ring scandal without even fact-checking enough to see what had been found previously by a formal investigation in '97 where the same accuser had led the enquiry to conclude the Lord McAlpine here was not the man. Inexcusable. Sloppy journalism of the worst sort. Quite right to seek damages. Surprised he didn't get more TBH, whatever his current financial position.

Hahahaha. What's that Jerry? 1987 you were saying that but had to pull the album for fear of libel you say? Truly a man far, far ahead of the times.

Seriously, Sepher, I agree with everything you say in a thoughtful post. Save, perhaps, that Lord M will be forever tainted by suspicions of paedophilia. I don't think he will, but be rather remembered as he should be, the incidental victim in a tale of media negligence. Let's hope so.

Haha, oh god.

Was a bit surprised at the whole Rolf thing, not seen anything about it apart from a blog post and an article in the Daily Mail though.

Not an 'attack', just a lack of comprehension. HM is or was in some way connected to pedophiles? Sez who? You'll need to run that one by us in greater detail, I'm afraid.

Stuart Hall.

It's a cock-out.

You'll all get that when you catch up with the news.

Oh, and, NOOOOOO. NOT Stuart Hall!!!
