Japanese Anime & Manga

If any of you are Giant Robot fans, then tonight at Kino come see PATLABOR 3 at 9:10, it should kick arse!!

A series to look out for is .hack//sign - I watched the first two episodes last nite (fansubbed) and this series rocks! I haven't been captured by an anime series like this since I discovered Lain.
At the helm of all things .hack-related are a trio of well-known entertainment figures. Scenario writer Kazunori Ito (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor) and animation director Koichi Mashimo (Popolocrois Monogatari, Irresponsible Captain Tylor) join Gainax character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, Nadia) who is reportedly working on a .hack manga series as well. Music is by Yuki Kajiura of Noir.
The animation is gorgeous and the music is some of the best in any series I've watched. The story, without giving away too much, is about an online RPG gamer who becomes imersed witihin the fantasy realm of the game and finds he cannot log out! So far, it's all been based in the fantasy realm and only a glimpse of the outside world has been shown. It's not big on action and fighting scenes, its a thinking persons anime!
If you loved Lain, then you'll love .hack//sign!
Madman Entertainment have expressed interest in the series so hopefully it will come out on DVD here in Australia. Until then, try and get your hands on a fansub!

oli and I have been progressively trying to watch lain.... and as yet we are still uncertain of whats going on... (6 episodes in) :P tho it is starting to make a little more sense now :)
but seeing as its been said to have been rather good I'll keep going with it..

stacyrox - what ever you do, don't give up on Lain! I've watched the series four times and I'm still picking up on things. The creators have always stated that alot of things are clear cut, but alot of things are left to the individual's interpretation - thats what makes Lain so special, once again the thinking persons anime :)
I'd be happy to clear anything up for you, but I think it would spoil the experience for you.
Another title to look out for in the same "Lain" mould is Boogiepop Phantom. It's weirdness factor really goes off the chart! Some of the same creators and animators from Lain where employed for this series, so it has a very similiar feel to it. Like in Lain, i love the animation in this title, colours are kept to a minimum, it has a very gothic feel to it! Boogiepop is also something that requires mutliple viewings as it's story line is not only complex but also fragmented - episodes will focus on a particular character and sometimes you're left wondering what the hell is going on - but in the end it all ties in!
Also, for those of you who love Ghost in the Shell - the spin off series (Stand Alone Complex) is well under way in Japan and hopefully filtering to our shores very soon - though I'd suspect an official relase will be in the distant future.

the neon genesis evangelion boxed set containing all 8(?) dvds is out at jb hifi. i think they're going for $160 or there abouts (saw them yesterday but i could be mistaken); which is a good deal considering 1 of them usually costs around $31.

:P
Although they have just run out of stock due to vast interest, but I'm sure their next re-stock will be in the next couple of days. If you have the patience then you could save yourself a few $$. I order all my locally released anime from FBO and save a fortune.
And yes, the box set includes all 26 episodes.
The two movies will also be released in a boxed set on their own. Different licences did not allow Madman to include them in the above box.

Evangelion is the best series out of any anime or non anywhere. Death & Rebirth was a bit dissapointing though :( most of it is just old scenes and a teaser for end of evangelion. End of Evangelion rocks but, it should have made up the episodes just before the last three though (starting from the one after the kaworu bit)
Ninja scroll and gunsmith cats are also pretty good. Never really liked robotech and found cagliostro a bit boring, and akira too weird. havent seen many others

Death and Rebirth - The first of two alternate endings to Neon Genesis. I seen it at Manifest and it rocks :) The second alternate ending, End or Evangelion is scheduled for October. Also, there is a box set of all the series to be released.
NONO! death and rebirth isnt an alternate ending, theres only one ending. What death and rebirth is is a recap, and a teaser of end of evangelion. The chapters 1-11 are just recaps of actual episodes and character analysis. chapters 14-16 are actually the first few chapters of the 'end of evangelion' movie.
Death and rebirth should be seen after the end of evangelion imho, it doesnt really have a whole lot of new drawings, its bits and peices.
The end of evangelion however is the main movie. you have to see the series first but or it makes no sense

evangelion is not the best series ever. it may be the most hyped ever.
for my money, i'd put bubblegum crisis in before evangelion. cowboy bebop and kenshin have me hooked at the moment, but lain wins for me as favorite series.
and the series i watch religiously have seen most of the episodes (across 5 series) and read many of the comics but will deny all knowledge of if confronted: dragon ball z
not the best series, but damn can they put together a fight scene or draw out a plot so you just *have* to watch the next episode.

eva is just good because it was widly shown in english.. but there have been MUCH more and imo better shows that just havnt been dubbed but u can get subbed :P
i recently downloaded all 25 eps of final fantasy unlimited (im on 56k so it took a while to finish :P) its an alright series, trys to follow the kind of style that most final fantasy games have you even get to see summoned creatures and when battles are won u hear the same battle won sound that u get in the games, i enjoyed watching it :)
[edit]just a bit more to say :P[/edit]
one of my all time fav series HAS to be slayers, it has to be one of the only series that has gotten better as it goes through its 3 series.. slayers, slayers next, and slayers try.. all of which i had the pleasure of watching on my acctualy tv using laptop! *drools*
also LOVE manga, anyone who loves manga has to check out the series Devil & Devil, i HIGHLY recommend it.. u can email me and ill give ya a site to download it form if ur interested.. also other manga tiltes i love are love hina (how can u not like that) video girl ai, beserk, 3x3 eyes, blade of the immortal (love that), trigun mangas are also pritty cool, and omg, one of the best manga and anime series out there HAS to be hellsing

For those in Melbourne, screenings of Spirited Away begin today at selected Hoyts and Village cinema's (check their websites).
For anyone into anime, I highly recommend you get off your arses and go and see this and also show your support for anime - it's not very often that anime gets to the big screen in Australia.
If anything, go just to shove it up Disney's arse for not giving it the support it should of - in fear of it over-shadowing their own releases (Treasure Planet and some lame one with Adam Sandler).

Is anyone into the Intial D series? Just goes to show you how much of a cult drifting really is :)
haste, I also recommend (as you have):
Kenshin
Lain
Theres a fair few other that Bossdog introduced me to, but I lack the names at the moment -- although I think they are fairly classic and probably have been already mentioned.

I've got a couple of fansubs of Initial D and its ok, but it doesn't do much for me - how far into the series have you gone? Maybe I should give it more of a chance?
For thoose who liked the animation in Lain (the wonderful work of ABe) then look out for these two series:
NIEA_7 - Madman will be releasing this locally next year on DVD
CHARCOAL FEATHER FEDERATION - Just released in Japan so it might be awhile before we see it on DVD, although I'm sure it won't be long before Fansubs will be available.
Also, anyone who imports Region 1 discs check out www.dvdboxoffice.com - I get all my Region 1 discs from there - free international shipping! You also have a choice of paying in either US or Canadian dollars. The killer in importing is the freight, but using them you can save between 20 - 30 dollars!

All I'd like to say is....
Today I found the actual Gatchaman DVD's! Not the mutilated Americanised version which they have in the shops... However each series (looks about 3-4DVDs) is $100 *frowns*.
Goddamn I need to get myself a job.......
stace.

Hmmm... Japanese anime? More like a live action Korean movie ;) And a pretty dodgey one too...
Does anyone know if any other countries make anime-like series/films? I know they show a lot of anime in Hong Kong but it's all Japanese stuff that's been dubbed.
