Japanese Anime & Manga

and haste, i don't beleive you left out Ninja Scroll!!
They've released some new "ninja scroll", called Ninja Scroll ressurection, but they're short episodes and not very good.

I actually watched Ninja Scroll the other nite again for the second time and I enjoyed it much better this time round - I think watching it in the original japanese dub made it more enjoyable for me :)
Yes yes, I'm one of those people who think Anime is better watched in Japanese than in engrish. Some people find the subs distracting, but you get used to it - watch alot of SBS and you'll have subs down pat. I need to learn Japanese :D
As for downloading anime - I very rarely download any anime, and it if I do it might be a couple of episodes to see what a series is about. I like my anime on DVD - if I love a series or movie I like to own it, but thats my obsession!
ICFML - I can't believe I missed mentioning Trigun - good call!
For those who enjoy series like Ranma 1/2,the first two volumes of Love Hina are now out on DVD - it's hilarious!!

agreed about the subtitles, i've been getting the Rourouni Kenshin series, and they're in jap, subb'd english.
But like most things, if you just bite down and deal with it... it all becomes alright :)

Have you got your hands on Vol 7 yet? Its the begining of the Kyoto arc, and its where RK really begins to shine! You get to see Kenshin as the Manslayer in the past and also see that its still buried within him. The fight scene between Kenshin ans Saito is the BEST fight scene you'll ever scene - it sooooo tense!
It's taken on a more darker and serious feel (not as dark as the OVA's though), but the comical relief is still there. Seeing Kaorou mature and finally realise how much Kenshin means to her was very touching :(
If you haven't got it yet - do so!!

i prefer the japanese dialogs with english subs too... i find the english dubs not very emotive or just sound plain silly... its like watching english dubs of old chinese kung fu films :O

heh vurt it isnt so bad.
I've seen the "test" between kenshin and saito, at the moment, the makoto guy just unveiled his black ship and is heading back to tokyo.
I found the fight scenes poor, you just see random slashes and the litle guys die. But its the big fights with the big guns you appreciate..
Like that fight between saito and kenshin is so heated. its great

Some english dubs are ok - but Vurt is right, they often lack the emotion of the original Japanese soundtrack. English voice actors seem to be going through the motions, it's mearly a paid job. The Japanese actors put alot more emotion and heart into their acting - and this is understandable. Manga and anime are huge in Japan and interwined within their culture - Americans (where the english dubs are done) view anime as cartoons, and cartoons are for kids and very marketable - quality is secondary.

Anime is the bomb!
my favourite series would have to scryed, followed NGE and raxephon. Has anyone seen lovehina or the gatekeepers? really really wack ;)
Ninja scroll definatly rates up there, as does akira, ghost in the shell, vampire hunter d, perfect blue, and spriggan.
Oh yeh and initial D.....theres a guy that drives around perth in a celica like the hatchi-go/rok(sp?.....i forget which car has it on) thats got been curd shop written on the side in japanese. I saw him and started talking to him and he sed that the japanese chamber of commerce sells those stickers so u too can be like the master of initial D.
oh yeh, Stage 3 is definatly the best 8)

i picked up the 2 eva movies a few weeks ago, but i've only been able to watch them once so far, so i haven't yet figured out what the hell happend.

The screening of Coyboy Bebop will be in its native language of Japanese (English subs) for any of you that might have been hoping for an English dub - the English dub was originally scheduled. I myself prefer subs over dubs for any anime I watch.
Also, those of you who have watched the series in English dub, the voice actors in the movie are different.
i've had the chance of watching a Fansub of the movie (yes I know it's cheating ;) ) and the movie is very slick, if lacking in plot - I think you'll enjoy it even more if you haven't seen the series, not that the series has any bearing - the movies stands on its own quite well. I just prefer the series :)
ok, I've said enough...
If anyone is interested in trading Fansubs let me know - Flea you were interested? I only download Fansubs though.

Please, fill me in!!!!!

the movies are condensed version of the series and provide an alternate ending cos the original ending was too surreal for a lotta people... but it would appear that the alternate ending raises just as many questions. i havent seen the movies myself, waiting to get the second part.
they are: death and rebirth, and the end of evangelion.

i just came back from tree of palme:
-
well, tree of palme instantly became one of the best anime i've seen... visually breathtaking, riveting landscapes and flora... even when the plot dragged a bit, my eyes were glued to the screen.
stylistically reminded me of this french comic artist by the name of jean "moebius" giraud, very clean lines, plain colours; very very surreal.
a big headfuck in terms of storyline(s)... so many sub-storylines happening on different levels: dealing with desires, loss, failed dreams, innocence, love and yearning... ironically all interweaved around a non-human puppet as their focal point.
the film developed the protagonist, palme, very nicely at the beginning though some might have found it slow. however, 3/4 into the movie, i thought it became rather "clumsy": when he started displaying somewhat mercural personalities which might have been inferred but no catalyst was readily recognised.
the female character, popo, became the focus, and at times, obsession of palme: she was the one who snapped him out of his initial fugue state, and later on, became his anchorpoint as his mind and body dissolved. i thought she could've been "fleshed out" more. she had her moments... when she rebelled against her mother, asking if she was just her puppet, seconds after palme was kicked aside as an inaminate object.
shatta, one of the supporting cast, is an abandoned street kid, leader of a band (who provided comic relief) dreaming of taking over the flamingo. he was introduced as a mercenery character who saw palme as a source of money. the flim sees him change and slowly make an about-turn, supporting palme in his quest. shatta never belonged wherever he was; in search of his mother and made peace with her in palme.
which brings us to koram, whom shatta searched for, the mother who abandoned him, who, in turn, was abandoned by her father. a restless and i hazard to say, vindictive/vengeful soul. she started the chain of events which saw her attaining and losing her life, for what her brothers and father could not do, to prove her worth. that was then entrusted to palme to finish the task which made him cross paths with shatta. full circle.
the tamas tribe... the portrayed "bad guys" in the film... they themselves innocents, victims of a god who has forgotten and cast them aside for something, better. the influence of moebius is most evident in the way they were drawn, their clothes and technology.
what i've written does not begin to describe how mind blowing tree of palme is, when u sit in darkness fully submerged in an alien, surreal and vaguely familiar dream, rifed with undercurrents of emotional distress and innocent joy.
a very poignant and beautiful journey.
:)

Vurt..you were there! Me Twigz, Hideho and Stacyrox were there too :)
Beautiful Animation, but boy was it long :) (i needed more ninjas or giant robots :P)
Speaking of Giant Robots you Anime fans should Check out PATLABOUR: MOBILE POLICE, and a series calles GASARAKI...both are EXCELLENT!!!
Oh, and i forgot to mention PRINCESS MONONOKE and RECORD OF LODOSS WAR (which im deasperatly waiting to come out on DVD)
