Japanese Anime & Manga

Macross Plus Move Edition is much much better than the 4 part version they showed on TV. They sell it now, in it's complete form with dolby 5.1 for you home theater owners, and subtitles only. A must buy imho if you love Macross Plus. I got both the 4 part series and the Movie Edition...

http://www.manga.com <- info on it, I'm sure you could order it from somewhere else cheap.

On Macross Zero, you got any links on what it is exactly, I did a couple searches and found only japanese sites. (I can't read or speak japanese)

Macross Zero - is a 5 part OVA series that is a prequel set a year before the events of the original Macross. I have found the following description for you, I've yet to see it myself..

It was 1999 when a huge extraterrestrial battleship fell down to the Earth and brought superior technology which led to the beginning of war between U.N and Anti-U.N. Eight years have passed, so many veteran pilots were lost one after another, so even boys in their teens were gathered into the battlefield to fight the war.

Shin Kudou, a young U.N F-14 pilot and the main character of the story gets shot down by an unknown enemy ship during a sortie and crash landed on a solitary island.

Coincidentally, an unusual energy reaction is detected on the island, and the energy reaction might be originated from the Protoculture's superior technology legacy which was brought by the extraterrestrial at ancient times. This technology legacy is very similar from the recovered fallen extraterrestrial battleship eight years ago.

Now, both of U.N and Anti-U.N are going to invade the island for the quest of recovering the legacy and the superior technology it posesses...

Like I said, I have not seen it myself but I have been hearing very good things about it! The reason you haven't been able to find any english sites is because it was only recently released in Japan. No outside liscence has been acquired yet. It is however available on fansub.

hope this helps....

Thanks for the summary. :)

Good News, I dled the first one fansubtitled, and it is schweet. The animations are very cool, actually reminds me a lot of Ghost in the Shell - Stand alone Complex, anyhow I'm already into the series. The main character seems pretty cool you don't learn much about anyone so I'm still waiting for the next stuff to come out. Can't wait to see the next episodes.

Also I got Patlabor 2: The Movie on DVD, I give it a A-

Excellent animations, good storyline, not that much mechs and what not but enough to keep me satisfied. It's really dectectivish but the movie gots a lot of cool and smart scenes. I don't wanna spoil anything but the movie is really well made imho. Gets boring ever now and then so it could have used some more action, but overall it's great.

Btw all the Patlabor 1 characters appear here and there throughout the movie :)

Excellent! Keep us updated on Macross Zero - might just have to add it to my list - bah I'll do it anyway :D

Just starting two series.
Wolf's Rain
Project Arms

Wolf's Rain, so far is addictive. Very intresting series about people who are wolves. Takes place in the future where wolves are supposedly extinct and wolves hold the key to paradise. Not much has happened yet except we've met a couple wolves who are just doing their own things in this city. I've only seen to episodes.

Project Arms, pretty cool series about a kid who has is just plain super. Faster, stronger, etc... How he became like that is still a mystery, apparently other people have gone through the same type of surgery or whatever to become super.

Both series have excellent animation quality so I recommend it to all. Saw some Dragonball GT, kinda lame imho, I dunno it's not that intresting. Feels like same old same old, plus it just isn't appealing.

On Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex, the thing that makes it lacking versus other series is that there doesn't seem to be a central plot throughout all the episodes. Like some new enemy pops up every episode (aside from the laughing man) but in Cowboy Bebop, you meet new characters, Faye and Edward, and you have intrecet stories going back to their past or episodes with their past coming back to them. I dunno, it's cool and all but it lacks that thing that just makes me want to sit down and wonder what's going to happen in the next episode or when the characters are gonna meet their individual conflicts.

Wolf Rain rocks! One of my favs at the momment - I really like the concept behind the series - its new :)

How far have you seen into Stand Alone Complex? I haven't seen it yet, I have about 5 episodes but their in my cue to watch - and believe me that cue is HUGE! *lol* I've quickly skimmed over a few episodes to see what animation is like.

Anway the reason I ask is that alot of the times it takes awhile for a series to develop its main plot. Alot of series are full of plotless episodes at the begining in order to develop the characters - do you think this might be the case with SAC? Again, I haven't seen it so I don't know. Its 26 episodes and I'm sure it develops a plot as time progresses. Early days yet.

There have been a few series, such as Noir and Witch Hunter Robin, that started off slow with character building episodes and then moved into the main plot at about the middle of the series. I think you'll notice alot of anime's going in this direction - its to be viewed as a whole and not judged on a episode by episode basis. Well thats how I judge an anime anyway - if I were to judge on the first few episodes I would have missed out on seeing alot of the my favourites - including the above two.

I've been trying to finish the Scryed series for about a month now but I could never get passed episode 4, but I bit the bullet and I'm glad I did. From episode 8 this series really comes into being - I'm really enjoying it at the momment, its just gets better and better. :)

Stick with it ;)

I will. :)

I've seen up to episode 12 now (I am the ultra leecher ;)) and it's getting bigger. It seems to be centerlizing on a huge hacker now kinda like how Spike vs. Vicious in the Cowboy Bebop series. I don't wanna give away his name, don't wanna spoil it for anyone.

I understand what your saying completely but in Wolf's Rain I'm already eager to see the next episode to see what develops versus' the couple first episodes of SAC where they just complete a mission. And then each episode has some deep meaning inside the plot. But then what happens before disappears it's meaning in the next episode. It's definately getting better though, we learn about Batou's backround (I think it's his name, I always get confused, it's the dude that's in the movie also with the eye implants and pony tail) and this super hacker keeps popping up in every now and then. I think your right, I didn't know they had 26 episodes :)

Once again I've jipped myself. Just like with Macross Plus in which they released an edited 2 dvd set for the OAV, they're doing the same with the Kenshin OAV. And releasing a directors cut in may. Now in total I'm gonna spend 50 bucks for the same 1 movie :\ Another thing is Kenshin Reflection is out from ADV films I gotta check my local stores if they have it otherwise I'll just leech it off the net.

My last complaint is to release the Cowboy Bebop Movie to America... You know the date for it?

Yes 26 eps for SAC :)

Don't be overly concerned about the directors cut of the Kenshin OVA's - you'll barely notice the difference in the two - more of a marketing ploy than a stack of new unreleased material. I think in all it amounts to 3 minutes of extra footage, which alot of it is cussing.

Cowboy Bebop the movie hits selected cinema's in the America from April 4.

Vol 1 - 13 of Kenshin have been released in Australia, Vol 14 (the end of the Kyoto Arc) comes out in 2 weeks :D

ilbumy - you do have high hopes, its dubbed ;)

How many EP's are on each volume? 4?

The last one I've seen is, Soujuro v Kenshin...

The last scene is Soujuro attacking kesnhin with his really fast attack, then it cuts to the credits...

I've been hanging out for a good... 5 months now! I need to see the rest of it!

They vary between 4 and 5 episodes per volume.

Vol 13 (released mid March) has the fight you are talking about, among other things. Vol 14 (release mid April) ends the Kyoto arc - I won't be buying past Vol 14.

Cowboy Bebop the Movie eh?

I've heard many a good thing about this series from this thread.. soon I will have the money to purchase the damn thing (and the last 2 Lain DVD's...). Just wondering if its better to see the series before watching the movie? Or is there much correllation there between the two.. I dont wanna go see the movie then have the series spoilt or not be able to understand parts of the film coz I havent seen the series.

Now that I actually have an income I can start looking into all this anime you lot have been raving about :)

(After I purchase the available series of Red Dwarf ;))

stace.

Cowboy Bebop (movie) is pretty much a stand alone movie - the story line has no bearing on the series and visa versa.

Having watched the series though does help with relating to the characters - all the character development is done through the series natuarally.

If you get the chance to see the movie - see it regardless!! :)

Great! Seeing the movie will prollymake me more motivated to buy the darn series :)

Just got home from JB, finally got DVD 3 of Lain and picked up DVD 1 of Excel Saga... looks extremely cheesy, but it just cried out "watch me!!"

Looks like I'm gonna hafta save up and purchase the Studio Ghibli Collection.. coz I'm dying to see those movies. *waves goodbuy to her first few paycheques* =D

stace.

Lain is an excellent choice :)

Excel Saga - didn't really do it for me - it tried tooooo hard to be funny that in the end made it not funny for me. Its fast paced, zaney and the comedy gets delivered thick and fast - overdone for my liking. But hey, I know alot of people who love it!! The opening theme is really catchy :D

I thought the part about Pedro and his family was gold. :D

But the rest was trying a bit too hard to be zany and avante garde or something. And also that both the original and dub voice actors for excel were exceedingly annoying sounding.. :\
