Is trance Dead?

Oh and prog isn't dead and boring :p
Admittedly a lot of prog is self indulgent bollocks but done right I think it's one of the best types of dance music to lose it properly to.
Listen to James Zabiela and you'll see how good prog (well prog + breaks) can be.

Dr Seuss: I'd say prog fans are among the more musically open-minded, not the other way around. Of all the people I hang/party with, no-one likes as much music as I do, whether it be prog, tech-house, breaks, dnb, 'deep-trance', techno, acid, ... I just don't like cheesy trance, or hard banging ghey shit (ie. NRG). People tend to think we (prog-fans) are narrow-minded because we only like 'prog', but funnily enough, prog tends to incorporate such a broad range of sounds, that we are in fact very broad minded, and very open to new sounds (generally).
Shove that up your cookie-naught... ;)

trance can be subclassified so many different ways... when i first discovered it, i was all about the "epic" style... you know what i mean...
as i listened to more and more of it and even became a bedroom dj (yeah, another one, but i'm not too bad :) )... i learned that i love the dark progressive sound that is pretty minimal, and pretty damn repetitive too, but i guess that is why i like it... don't trip on what other people think about your favorite genre... it's all good in it's own right...
for an example of something fairly new that is really nice:
Mark Wheawill - Darkside (Databass Rmx)
Mark Wheaill - Darkside (Original)
one side is break-trance (databass rmx) and the other is just dope (IMHO) prog trance...
check out Release Records for a constant influx of really good prog trance (as well as some house, breaks, and D&B)...
one more thing... planetxusa.com has the best selection of prog trance consistently available... when you do a search on trance, be sure to specify the subcategory of Progressive (UK)

as some of you said before, I will say again. Trance hasn't died, it just isn't the shiny new car it used to be. I agree, it is very hard to find good trance. the surplus of crap out there is overwhelming. that "new car smell" of trance is gone, trance is no longer a surprise - unless, of course, you find those rare tracks. all genres of music have their highs and lows. trance gave way to the progressive sound, and soon progressive will give way to the next new sound. its all going in cycles, soon electro-funk-trance fans will be asking if progressive is dead.

Hey Everyone,
I have been a trance fan since about 95. The reason I am writing this is that I am wondering if any other trance enthusiasts are experiencing a a real downer with this music style these days.
Years ago people were into trance. People did high quality MDMA and the music was revealed for the secret language it is. Personally I find it frustrating that people get so annoyed with the four/four trance style. They tend to give that part of the song all thier attnation paying little attention to the changes that are occuring which is where much of the artistry in trance occurs.
It seems like everyone likes Funky HOuse, hip hop,
bla bla party music.. MCing bla bla ...
Yeah I''m jaded. I 'm frustrated...
What is peoples resistance to trance? Its like they don't like it if there not on E. F#%@! dat...
if you want to roast me for my negativity fine. I'll admit I am venting a little but man the majority of people frown at big ripping club trance synths. What is up? I love the shit!
Classy riffs and synths plus orgasmic female vocals are the bomb. But man most people don't know how to relate.
Any other trance heads got tips for engaging the energy. My mixing is decent.
Also if anyone has noticed Trance use to flow with huge driving euphoric melodies. Now it prog house style with minimal layering and not much energy. What the hell has happened to trance?
Get over the fear get into the Groove.
Any comments?

The problem is that tranced peaked in 1999-2000. You had PVD putting out a huge anthem "We are Alive" and you had Darude "Sandstorm" among others and they got some mainstream airplay. After that everyone wanted to make the next epic bomb and as a result a lot of uninspired imitations. Now trance is not dead by any stretech of the imagination and Oakie and Tiesto are proving that with some awesome remixes "Southern Sun" "In my memory". Also ferry corsten has come out with an awesome track "Punk". So chin up... in a year PVD is coming out with a new album and hopefully a lot of the heavy hitters are about to bring back the trance.

nice shot, totally true (hopefully), cheesy trance is dead. Trance and Progressive stopped moving forward years ago, the fresh sound is in the psy/goa scenes where it has constantly progressed every year, look into it, and discover a whole new universe.

I disagree slightly... ;) A lot of the psy/goa I've heard in the last few years has been quite crap. That said, some it is so f*cking awesome it's ridiculous! For me, a nice compromise between deep, dark progressive-house, soundscape oriented (ie. not uplifting, riff-tastic, ghey shit!) progressive-house/trance and quality, rocking-ass psy-trance!!! :D
There's a happy medium. :D

Hey,
If you think trance is dead, check out any recent sets by Mark EG, M-Zone, Ben Eye, Vortex. I could go on, but cant be arsed. The fact of the matter is prog is s**t, and trance still kicks arse.

p.s Neither are as good as Hardcore though ;)

Mark EG isn't trance! There isn't a single record that I've heard him produce with a trance melody in it!
And I've seen him spin live last year and it was a bangin techno set!
................................................
And I personally think that Trance is so commercialized that it makes the "SPICE GIRLS" look underground!

Barf... that shit makes me sick. Theres nothing new or interesting about goa... its just about as formulated as cheese trance.

Hard Trance, the likes of scott project etc. is what im into, other trance styles seem to be to soft and dull for me.
But hard trance can borderline on Hard NRG and distinctions can be hard to make.
Please feel free to correct me guys :D

progressive isnt dead because progressive isnt anything.
'progressive' djs will still continue to play good innovative music, which will continue to be called prog, regardless of what it sounds like.
