nukleuz (hard trance) is the biggest selling vinyl distributor in the uk, one of the biggest markets.
i sat with 5000 people at frantic in brixton tow weeks ago, and i can assure you trance is far from dead. turnmills, the end - quality clubs have been adjusting their sound, because mindless anoraks have driven the prog lemming over the cliff.
and what's with progressive fans hating all other types of music? that's not very 'progressive' is it??? ;)

For those who think progressive = boring, you're listening to the wrong progressive. It's an open, inclusive genre, and now that the 'purists' have set the tone for it, hopefully people in your area are moving forward seeing what they can pull off in it. You can always play your trance discs at -4. I think they sound better like that anyways.
I think trance heads are perhaps jealous that so many high-profile dj's are jumping on the progressive bandwagon, primarily the GU mafia. I don't know if anybody expected progressive to kill or supplant trance. It just seems hard to lump the two in the same genre together, and to me, it's the trance sound that's more distinct. Trance upholds itself to certain specific parameters, and it's in that that it's limiting.
One thing i see happening, though, is a progressive dj bringing in elements of breaks, trance, electro, rock, and maybe even jungle in a progressive set.
For now, i'm enjoying Trendroid's Transport 6.

in an idealistic world, I'd like to believe your statement hydra, but the plain fact is that music culture has found synergy with what the paying customer has been putting into their body. prime example being the rise of euphoric anthem trance in '98 which coincided with the first round of the infamous mitsubishi. the gabber/hardcore explosion in the mid nineties was also a direct offshot from the experimentation of more speed- based self medication (be it taken directly or whether the pills were more speed based at the time). you can lend alot of credibility to today's progressive movement as a direct correlation with people's post honeymoon mitsubishi era. either that or it's digweed's falt ;)

prog/tech/breaks/house/hiphop/sometimes-dnb/sometimes-trance lover right here. i know plenty of people the same.
and maybe im just a stoner, but i reckon diggers gu019 has far more interest in it than pretty much any trance mix ive heard. i know which id rather hear at a club.

Drugs dont create a scene but they do play a part in some, with the people enjoying their first pills (early Mitsis with over 100mg MDMA in them) they were listening to trance and putting money back into the industry and it became popular as it becomes popular more people start to cash in and cheaper copies of the tracks appear, so does cheaper copies of the pills.
People grow tired of the music, people grow tired of the pills, people look for something else and arrive at progressive, I bet many people riding the progressive wave now were doing exactly the same with trance not so long ago.

I don't know why you people think trance is dead. Just because you don't listen to it anymore doesn't mean it doesn't exist. 2002 has been a HUGE year for trance. Most of you probably aren't even listening to the right stuff.

Pulser - Cloudwalking (Beat Pushers mix) awesome new remix of a classic song
DJ Tiesto - Lethal Industry (original and good remixes around)
Paul Van Dyk - Take Me Higher (pvd dropped this at Mayday 2002. Don't know if it's a remix or original. pretty slammin either way)
I could go on with a longer list. Alot of these songs are new and may be hard to find on regular sharing software. Maybe not, I haven't checked.
Don't get me wrong, I like progressive (to an extent) and all that other shit (except hard trance, hard house. that's for e-tards ;) ). But to think trance is dead is just ignorant. Just because Mixer and Urb don't cover it (because they're too cool) doesn't mean people aren't making it.
Now with home software production on its way to becoming as professional sounding as pro studio hardware setups, the future is going to be very interesting.

OK, you guys are making me confused. I've been in the scene for 3 years. When I started partying I was hanging out with old school kids. They introduced me to back 3 yrs ago what they called "trance", I've got certain cd's in my head as what I know as trance, but by your definitions of progressive they seem like they could fit that bill. ex:
1.John Digweed - Sydney
2.Deep Dish - Moscow
3.Sasha - San Francisco
So to me these are trance, and they're some of the most welldone electronic music sets I've ever heard. For anyone who says trance is boring, and that they can't get down to it Listen to 1 track and tell me you can't appreciate trance.....that track is.... Stoneproof(Quivver) Everything's not you. Track #12 on Sasha GU009 San Fran. That track is exactly why I think Trance is the best techno still. Don't get me wrong I listen to all the styles of techno and I can appreciate the qualities in all of them, I just think "trance" has the most thought put into it.
If you are saying that gay, "cheesed itself onto the radio" tracks like Sandstorm, better off alone, i need a miracle type stuff are trance, you have got to be kidding yourself. those songs are nothing more than what they are. Marketed for money radio S*IT. not trance.
.....and for the person in the earlier post that commented on Nu-NRG being "hard banging gay shit", NRG kidz aren't trying to say that they think NRG is the most well done type of techno, they know its not, All They are trying to be is the most hype as humanly possible for their scene.
Which I respect the hell out of NRG kids represent their love for techno in general. Partying hard. Getting down. being hype. and representing.
But there's my 2 cents. Someone please answer my trance progressive question. It's trance to me

I was rasied on the hard house sounds of NYC. That's what I know, that's what I like. I can and do appreciate other genres of dance, trance included. But, one thing that has really pissed me off about trance is how is has basically defined the American dance experience of straight people. All you ever hear the straight kids in the US talk about is all those Euro DJ's who spin trance and can't wait till their next world tour brings them to town. Please don't misunderstand me. This isn't about bashing trance, or Europe. It's about creating distinctiveness. Each region in the world should be working on and developing their own unique sound. This is what gives dance music vareity. Chicago house, Detriot techno, Northern Soul (UK), German industrial, etc. IMO trance has over extended it's boundary and needs shrink back a bit. It's good music... just not that good. Make room for other creative endeavors. Thanks.

Trance has become harder and darker.....that's all. No more ppl selling millions of records with tracks made their $50 keyboard.....the bubblegumer's are few and far between.
Sasha, Digweed, Oakie, Chistopher Lawerence.....have given way to guys who have changed with the music....Ferry Corsten, PVD, judge jules, johnny vicious, ect...

WTF!? :D I think you might find that PvD, Corsten, Judge Julez, etc... are STILL PEDDLING TYHE SAME TOSS THEY ALWAYS HAVE, and people like Sasha and Digweed have progressed, exposing new music, new sounds, and new ideas.
Oh, and Oaky is a faggot. I'd like to show him a little respect, but he sucks way too hard for that. Saw PvD this year, and while some of the tracks were pretty decent, the majority was old, crap, overplayed, over-hyped, bullshit-trance.

Well as the person who started this thread I feel I might get in one last word before it supposidly closes at 100 posts.

Thanks again for all the input from those that cared to give a sincere thoughtful response or a an emotional reactive response as well.
Moral of the story. people like different shit.
Wisdom would say not to judge others taste or style. People's experience is highly subjective, especially in the dance world.
Is trance dead.. I would have to say no.
Just last night a band played, then house music came on, we were all at the club through a couple of sets and eventually said "okay lets here some energy now please" Some kid said,"wow I sure would like to hear some progressive."
I am more than positive now that the "next" kid after that could have easily said "okay lets here some trance now."
Form the toughest tribal progressive to the biggest epic sythns...
