Is trance Dead?

The big mainstream trance scene which came out of Europe in 1998 probably had a lot to do with good quality pills being made on a large scale for the first time in years.
Many people say that without the high quality pills that scene wouldnt have gone as far...

Talking in Melb Australia of course. I think trance in it's purest form has taken a back step to Hard trance/hardNRG and hard house. It seems in these days of short attention spans the kiddies need the music to be highly dynamic and constantly changing, with cheesy lyrics.
But trance/prog trance has just taken a back step. Much like techno. It will never die out as the pureists will keep it alive.

No longer the mainstream? ARE YOU KIDDING? OMG, it IS the mainstream, that's why it's dead. Everyone on the local highschool football team must know who Paul Oakenfold is, that's why it's dead.
Sin: Yes, the proper discussion would be whether Progressive is dead, trance has been dead for years now.

It will come back around full circle in about 3-5 years....watch.

Yeah just picture N´Sync with a new Trance album.
As mainstream as trance is these days, I could totally see N´Sync singing vocals in trance music!

trance, progressive, house
a lot of this is just semantics, and labels usually serve only to make people dislike a certain type of music only because it has a certain type of name. a lot of the time, music types, like 'grunge' refer more to the social or cultural constructs surrounding the music rather than the sound itself. grunge was really just good ol rock 'n roll, played by angst-filled generation xers. free your mind. listen to what you like.

Well I must say that I was feeling that the trance that I originally loved from 97-00, I guess was the span, had disappeared into Progressive but if you look in the Netherlands as someone said LOL you can still find it. I find a lot of new records are the same kind of emotional tracks, you just have to look for them. I think a quality track is harder to find because there is a lot of cheese out there but it's still around, don't give up hope :)

Trance is still the shizit!!Nah Trance is still my fav right next to hard house.Even sober which i usually am.

I still play really melodic music - I'd hesitate to call it trance, because it isn't really, it's progressive - dark, housey basslines, proper groove, but really blissed out soundscapes and emotive melodies. Deep Future Trance maybe. ;) Personally - I like the way 'trance' has gone. The good producers really get into the more subtle stuff, and make much better use of the percussive elements and basslines. It's much more about the soundscape than the melody. Generic trance is long-dead - a couple of years ago, Ferry Corsten was on all the Slinky CD's, now it's Bedrock and the Flash Brothers and some even deeper, housier stuff. Looks like that whole 'Dark-Progressive' phase, while not a stayer, certainly had an influence on the current sound. The cheese is gone, and it's a lot more 'serious' now, in a good way though! It's just evolution. ;)

well my 2 cents not worth much up here i know but trance gives me a fuckin headache. Its to high pitched for my ear drums, even coming down relaxing the day after a great party i jus have to have my bass, its a feeling in my heart that rumbles with emotions. to me trance was never alive but one thing about this music everyone likes what they like and none is dead if its not to you!

progressive is the wave of the future, it is greater than trance!!!
pfffft progressive might be greater than trance but get over it, it's really not all it's hyped up to be.
as if trance is not the mainstream anymore!? look at: ian van dahl, fragma, dani minogue/riva, dj sammy etc etc etc. fuck trance is essentially pop music.
i think you'll find that trance in the form of what it was around 98/99 is still around, but there's a limit to how many uplifting euphoric melodies and chord progressions you can have. it has to do something else, and it will come back in some form or another.

have you HEARD a good progressive set?

A sincere thanks to all who replied...
If ya'll don't mind I'd like to take advantage of the response this topic has created.
To whom this applies:
1 Where are the record stores online or bricks and mortar that one might find breakbeat trance?
2 I must agree that some of my most pumpin tracks are from Holland. Anyone know a specific source that offers that driving pumping sound that retains class?
3 For those that have mentioned specific track recomendations could you point me in the right direction to hearing or acquiring them?
Ofcourse I am not asking anybody to do the work for me I'm just throwing this outthere. Personally I am not all that impressed with Groovetech's trance selection. Please no offense I have scored some amazing gems there and its a great source. However trance doesn't appear to be their specialty.
I shop at TuneInn records in the uk. I do like thier stuff. Also Dotvinyl.com. Both really good sources for trance and techno. I do recommend them. However I suspect there are other outlets in countries like Holland that have some real undiscovered potential for providing US trance enthusiasts with some classy epic and club trance.
In addition I feel that its worth mentioning that trance works "better" when tehcnology is utillized to its maximum.
Ever been to a party with a trance set and zero visual effects. LAMO!
However put togther a few intellibeams, (possibly buget), a strobe or two, and some stable or moving mood lighting, a few black lights and art,
and Trance comes alive!
I feel that the trance effect may require multiple sensory stimulation far more than house or even progressive to be effective in getting people to dance there ass off. I don't mean just sitting bobbing with a beer in the hand I mean pumpin dude. Feet jumpin hands wavin absolutley uninhibited energy expereince. You out there know what I mean. Whether your on drugs or not you have had those nights when the Trance keeps you on a groove so sick and solid that all your worries were burned away in the energy of your ecstatic movements. That is trance.
Any further comments would be great. I appreciate
everyones comments and advice.
See ya on the dance floor.
Peace
epic

Methinks you should get out to hear some 'proper progressive' - Lucien Foort is one DJ who comes to mind when I think of these 2 words...
F*CKING ROCKING! :D

Epic:
I totally agree with you. Epic trance has completly phased out, and it's all turned into progressive house. I'm from southern cali (now in northern unfortunetly) but yeah, I am a true epic trance fan. My first love without a doubt. I'm frustrated as well that everyone has gone to progressive styles, but as others said, people's tastes in music "progresively" changes. But yeah man... nothing gets a croud goin' like a dope ass epic trance song. It can be so uplifting....amazing. I do think that in a few years, maybe only a couple, people will start lookin' for the typical 4/4 beat that epic trance is so atuned to. Anyway... just wanted to comment...lates.

prog is boring and dead ;)
there is nothing 'progressive' about music that induces narcolepsy. there were and are some amazing prog producers, but the chundering simple bassline no melody and maybe a daring sample formula has worn thin. ask people who run clubs what's pulling the crowds :)
there have been an average of 50.6 new trance tracks released every week worldwide - more so than any other genre.
nukleuz (hard trance) is the biggest selling vinyl distributor in the uk, one of the biggest markets.
i sat with 5000 people at frantic in brixton tow weeks ago, and i can assure you trance is far from dead. turnmills, the end - quality clubs have been adjusting their sound, because mindless anoraks have driven the prog lemming over the cliff.
and what's with progressive fans hating all other types of music? that's not very 'progressive' is it??? ;)

for good trance listen to:
yahel - for the people, devotion, sound & melody
antarctica - illusion, adrift, lazarev
pob - today, luna, ineffable plan

*pokes seuss*
See if you lived in England you people might know the score..... thats whats happening the score that is.

Trance isn't dying. However the style of trance that you associate with trance, ie 98/99 euphoric type trance is definitely on the way out. Virtually every new euphoric trance tune i've heard recently clings to the same repeated formula. It's still around, mainly i think due to its instant appeal and effectiveness on a dancefloor rather than musical originality.
There's loads of other types of trance which never reached the same popularity as the current styles .. these ones continue to be inventive and haven't become stuck in the desire for "that trancey sound".
