Is there anything that can be done to help people addicted to huffing paint?

Sorry; I'm in a very cynical mood so I'm pretty much going to disregard the "positive contribution" part of your post. Honestly, I would like to find a blunt object and continue to strike them over the head with it until they promise they will at least switch to a real drug. Personally, I habitually injected crystal meth...which is damned near the bottom of society's "druggie-totem-pole"; and even I find the concept of habitually huffing paint to be utterly retarded. If they won't at least switch to a real drug that offers something more than dizziness and brain-damage then I feel compelled to side with C. Darwin on this one and support survival of the fittest...

I'm rarely a hard-ass, but I'm nearly inclined to take the Darwin side of the argument.

However, go search for the thread "The stupidest thing you've ever done to get high" and you'll realize that the difference between us "real" druggies (lol) and huffers is knowledge and opportunity...ie. some of them don't know they can get high on better things, some of them can't find better things.

like what if all you ever found was eating nutmeg, and you never knew about opiates.

However, they are humans like we are, and their lives are so FUCKED up (like some of ours are), that they have to escape and numb out.

To paraphrase dennis miller...If all drugs and alcohol were banished by the govt. and not available, people would still go out on their front lawns and spin around till they got dizzy enough to fall down and see God.

Here's a tricky guerilla harm reduction tactic/dilemma:

Druggies, go share whatever you have with huffers, get them pointed in the right direction. Then they'll go get hooked on something harder so they can at least go get a proper rehab program.

i wouldnt, i cant stand that feeling.

1. hippies stink

2. there arent any public huffers here in toronto. do these people you are seeing have paint all over their mouths?

I find this whole subject depressing. When I was a teenager, I experimented with huffables. One of the biggest difs is that it is pretty easy to spot a huffer. They are wearing their drug and stink of it. When I was in the army I saw more huffers than in the civilian world. I guess because it was harder to get "real" drugs. We used to sit on the train tracks on base at night and smoke herb. One night a misguided youngster was huffing on the tracks and just sat there while a train ran right over him. I don't think he even knew what happened or where he was at. He just wasn't there. This young man saved 2 girls from getting raped 3 nights earlier. I was told later that it was the first time he ever did anything to alter his reality. He was ignorant of his danger and the 2 guys that were with him, let him sit there, thinking that he would move I guess.

So, while some of us might think that we can not help them I can't help but think that if someone would have pulled him to safety that night that he would have seen the error of his ways and not polluted his brain with that shit anymore. When you see someone huffing, or doing any drug, and putting themselves in danger, maybe it's their first time and you can make a diff. Maybe you can't, but the consequences of not trying can be the difference between living and dying. If that guy would have died 4 nights earlier than those girls would have been raped and had there lives ruined. Some people need to be saved from themselves and it's never too late to make a diff. We all take risks but sometimes we don't realize the extent of the risk unless it's pointed out. Sometimes having a stranger point that out can be more "sobering" than if it was our best friend.

That's partly what I'm getting at. . .lots of people don't like that feeling, but if it's the only thing available that gives you respite from reality, you might do it even though you can't stand that feeling

your post makes some sort of crazy sense...8(
I wonder if that approach would work as some sort of treatment program and if anyone anywhere has ever tried it as a solution.
:)

It makes sense, yeah...but like I mentioned before these poeple who huff paint etc do it because they are usually homeless or street kids so it's CHEAP! As far as I'm concerned...leave them be. It's either that or they get addicted to harder stuff which cost's more money...so it's likely they will resort to crime to feed their habits.

Yes, I know I'm generalising here...but I'm trying to imagine someone coming home from their 9 to 5 job in the evening, sitting in their room opening up a big can of $5 paint and getting all excited about it :D Does it really happen?

"'Chroming' refers to the use of chrome paint in spray cans. Metallic spray paints, such as gold and silver, have special solvents to suspend the heavier metallic particles. These solvents can have psychoactive effects such as delirium, disorientation, delusions and hallucinations."
taken from here and referring to a particular type of "huffing"...

if little johnnys government is using the term then I figure it's not really slang but has crossed over into mainstream English.
:)

^^The even sadder truth is that approaching someone in a state like that, and trying to tell them something isn't going to bring the most positive responses. People tend to get offended by strangers much faster than they will listen to a "kind suggestion".

No, they usually have their face in a paper (or plastic) bag. They are around in the downtown area.

Ha...yeah, sorry about that....I just love this picture of him :)

But on topic...I saw this little kid begging for money the other day, holding a small can of paint in his hands...he couldn't have been older than 14.

Made me sad.
