If you could ask Alexander Shulgin one question...

i would not ask this but, how did it feel after dozens of the drugs you worked with were demonstrated to be neurotoxic, thats would make anyone feel burnt out yet he seems so collected.

OMG! Mr Shulgin I'm your biggest fan! Will you tattoo your signature on my body?!?! Please!?!?!?

I'd probably ramble for a bit, but I'd definitely ask what hamhurricane suggested, maybe also if he felt any apprehension being the first person to ever try them.

i would also ask something along the lines of did you ever think you might be doing something morally questionable by releasing the recipes for drugs which are now sold on the black market as LSD, drugs which have killed numerous people and put many others behind bars and caused other adverse on many peoples lives. and it's not like he couldn't anticipate that this would happen. thanks for helping pollute the LSD market shulgin.

Wow, I have a few! I would cheat and sneak in more questions:

Which (psychoactive) substances have you tried aside from the ones you created in your research? Which of these is your favourite? Which of your creations do you find the closest to each, at least for those that are anything like any of your creations? While we're at it, what's your favourite out of your creations?

Which substances do you still use, if any? Why have you chosen to (or chosen not to) use your creations? What do you like and dislike about using various substances, both in general (general effects being a 'substance user' for any given period of time) and any notable specific substances?

What do you think of current drug policies? How do you feel about the regulations, arrests and deaths associated with some of your creations? Do you regret having created any of the substances you created? Do you regret that some of them have become available, or that some of them have not become widely available? If you could dictate drug policies internationally, what would your policies be? Would you want outright legalisation and deregulation? Something akin to Leary's 'responsible use centers?' Something else entirely?

I don't know if he would answer these ones ;) but:

Do you still synthesise any of your known creations? Any as-of-yet unknown new finds? Do you still synthesise new compounds and continue your research unofficially, or did the DEA license revocation really put a stop to it? Does the DEA or any other law enforcement group regularly raid/inspect your home or any labs you work with for signs of further illicit activity? Have you ever considered emigrating to a country that might allow you to continue your research, or at least carry less severe penalties for it?

Did you really never experience any lasting negative effects from MDMA?

His wife noticed a negative effect - she says she took MDMA every week for 12 months and then at the end of the 12 months it stopped working for her.

I think I'd ask him what other compounds he thinks could be psychoactive to give other chemists a leg up in creating new ones.

Ah, the price of freedom! Darn it. ;) I'm quite sure that was not Shulgins intent- rather blame capitalism, and thus the World, for creating things like black markets- or hell, just plain markets. Moneys a curse. Ad yeah, numerous people? Not really.

You see, we have a system that jails people for altering their conciousness- thats not his fault. I think he believed that by providing freedom to such information would largely make LE attempts to control psychedelic use impossible; which it has, or is. In that respect, I thank him.

*also, many of the so-called LSD substitutes (DOx series for example) were not originally synthesised by Dr. Shulgin.

I think I'd flat out ask him to synth me a kilo of LSD- I mean, thats what this is really all about isn't it? :)

"how do you keep so positive after all the shitty things your government has done to you, even after giving them lots of help/info?"

If I'd had all the shit Shulgin has had to wade through courtesy of the DEA acting like a petulant brat since PIHKAL was published, I think I might be a bit more cynical & jaded (possibly even bitter & twisted, but I'd hope I wouldn't)

Please could you teach me how to make these amazing chemicals..

I'm a strong believer in the "you don't have to know why.. just how".. umm.. saying? That's not a saying i just made that up.. anyway.. it's like you don't have to know the biology behind drowning, you just have to know not to breathe in water.. or.. you don't have to know why cooking meat is essential.. just that it is.. see what im saying? Can't think of any good examples right now.. Ah just thought of another.. you don't have to understand photosynthesis to know to give your plant sun light! :D

Haha!

"This means if you had recently used MDMA and you have hair, you would be breaking the law. It would be interesting to see the rave crowd with shaved heads, armpits and pubes. Then again, it might not be that obvious, as I am sure there would be a monster run on wigs and merkins." - Shulgin

It's on that website, the post about MDMA and hair drug tests.

I would definitely ask him if he has plans to ever release the psychedelic index, and how far in the future the release date will be.

I know it must be hard for him to decide whether to release it, because of all the good and bad that is done with his work. Last I heard about it, the phenethylamine section was finished and it has at least 1000 entries in it. Who knows if that's rumor or not. I'd love to see it someday though. It'd be like Christmas, haha.

So he is bitter and twisted, and will be giving the DEA sad puppy dog eyes when he finally publishes this omnibus... ;)

i got to meet shasha!!!

i got to meet him, along with his wife, after a lecture at john jay college in nyc

i asked him many questions which he answered openly....i believe he feels that the info in his books needs to be published and openly available. The people who use this info must be aware of all the possible toxicities, including physicial, mental and legal of the substances he describes

i also will not forget the joke he made as he entered the mens room...."as i get older i learned 3 things, never pass up a bathroom, trust a fart or ignore an erection!!"

oh, i would love to ask him if i could help him tidy up his lab and properly dispose of unneeded test compounds!!!

da phish
