Homosexuality

There is another way to look at this issue. How about this- the human race is doing so well in terms of advancement and numbers that it can afford to have some of its population not contribute to producing more numbers. Therefore having a significant proportion of the population being homosexual (or just choosing to not have kids) is an indicator that the human race is prospering with the growth of technology and not just relying on producing as many offspring as possible- like insects or fish etc.

I have heard that argument many times, and have never, ever found any example of which it becomes valid for several reasons.

1. Homosexuality exists in the animal kingdom as well. Humans are not the only animals that engage in homosexual behavior, and most of the species who engage in homosexuality are not as "successful" as humans.

2. What makes people think homosexuality is a recent thing? Homosexuality was prized in greek culture which didn't have nearly our level of sanitation and with a much lower overall quality of life.

Reading through this thread, i like zorn's comparasion of homosexuality to infertility. While it's a negitive thing for a species trying to prosper (whether humanity needs to prosper anymore is a different debate), it's certaintly not anyone's fault, nor should anyone be thought less of because of it. It's simply an unfavorable trait from the prospect of growth of a species

Hey, I don't mind wearing glasses to correct my myopia.

I also don't mind being able to choose not to have any offspring.

Life is ok for now.

In my early teens, a few of my close male friends who considered themselves straight tried to be with me (Flattering ;)).
Now they would go any girl in front of them.. maybe they grew out of it. But what do you think could of happened if i succumbed to their fantasy? I think the positive reinforcement theory might be valid. This sorta stuff is apparantly common with teens, I've heard many similiar stories, and not all of them turn out to be gay, but some do after these 1st steps..

More research definatley needs to be done before we can all come to an agreed conclusion on this subject of why we have homosexuality. Interesting ideas guys. CZ-74, i concur with your last few points

homosexuality as population control

I haven't read the entire thread but have to respond to this... Do you think homosexuality is widespread enough in any species that it actually has any connection to population control... Predators are population control... you'll also notice that even when these animals are homsexuals the females at some stage end up being rapped and force to reproduce anyway so I don't understand what you people are saying in regards to that.

In very dense rat populations, homosexuality becomes more prevalent... per capita
