I've heard that 95% of the THC is absorbed after 6 seconds, so holding it in longer probably won't make a noticeable difference.
this is true, and because the alveoli of our lungs only stay open to accept what has been inhaled for ~8 seconds usually.
there are more of them gathered around the top of our lungs, and these are also less used or damaged by smoke inhalation. so if you feel so inclined, forcing the volume of smoke upwards will bring a greater effect as well.
holding it in any longer is redundant and only adding unnecessary exposure time.
if you have a PPM or an EC meter, drop it in your bong water and read the results, bongs are also redundant as they captures the THC CBD etc in the water, amongst the solids. if anything, leave out the water,,, and add an ice-cube; the point of a bong is to cool the smoke to try and allow you to inhale more with out it being too hot. this doesnt mean you will absorb it all though, maybe only 1/2 of what is there with a real snot-bubble hit....
a nice slow burning joint, small hits to hold in will have a greater effect, you may not feel like king-kong bong ripper, but, you will save a great percentage of your stuff, and be "higher'' or ''medicated'' longer. and no it doesnt just burn away, most of the smoke trail is the type of paper you chose, and a minimal layer of the bud.
i can have a hard time keeping them lit honestly.

the US did a trial study on this in the 90's, and the above was the case, i couldnt ever find the abstract again to link it when discussing this in here before. they used a machine to process and analyze the smoke/vapors etc. this was also noted to be the only time such a study would be allowed in the US; or to be released publicly id say...
