Great post Generic. Before I respond I just want to say I appreciate you taking the time to give me a solid, well-reasoned, and cited response. Just for the record, I wasn't trying to be combative or promote that pills were safe, I just wanted to see why it's dangerous and have some proof. That being said, here's what I found from your article and my own research.
I researched the excipients contained in OxyConTin, which were as follows: Lactose monohydrate, Povidone, Ammoniomethacrylate co-polymer, Sorbic acid, Glyceryl triacetate, Stearyl alcohol, Talc, Magnesium stearate, Hypromellose (E464), Titanium dioxide (E171), Macrogol

As you can see, no microcrystalline cellulose, which is good. Microcrystalline cellulose is likely an issue concerning many pills that people IV, but obviously not here. The only expedient mentioned in the case study you provided is Povidone. It seems that Povidone is likely soluble in water, but I'm not sure to what extent due to conflicting information. That would mean it is likely of little consequence since the report warned of the injection of the "insoluble excipients" Also, I'm not sure that this case study is an accurate reflection of IV Oxy use for a few reasons. 1) The patient was chronically ill, suffering from "Cystic Fibrosis and poorly controlled CF-related diabetes mellitus", likely affecting the outcome. 2) She was injecting an aqueous solution of crushed acetaminophen/hydrocodone, which just seems like an insane amount of extra junk to get the hydrocodone. 3) No where in the article does it mention anything about how the solution was prepared, like whether it was heated or filtered, which are key issues in this thread. I'l need to do some further research on the other components of OXyConTin that I listed above to see which are water soluble, at what temperature, and whether or not they're dangerous.
For now, I'd have to say that on the surface it would appear that oxycontin is one of the safer pills to inject, if such a statement can be made. Shooting pills is dangerous, and that is undeniable, but as long as people are going to do it, it's nice to know what levels of danger you're dealing with. I guess that's the whole point of 'harm reduction' lol. Thanks for your response, its nice to get a response that has some factual basis to it and isn't just opinion. When I research those other components I'll get back to you guys.
