Do you pay attention to the shin splits afterward? If you get them, you're running incorrectly.
I don't get shin splints.

Thanks Kitten. Next 10K May 5th on a course a I never seen before about 50 minutes away. Not fond of the drive but I will run it once before the competition. This one is mostly flat...I think.

^^ Awesome to hear you're keen as beans for the next one already PI!! :)

Gettin' a lil bit of definition happening now:

sounds familiar. i've gone between distance running (160 lbs) and power-lifting (220 lbs) over the last 14 years (two major phases of both), with stop-offs in between at reckless substance abuse and moderation/balance. i've found the "hybrid" stages to take the most self-control - i always tend to get carried away with one thing or another and end up headed back towards one of the extremes.

it does, and thats why i like it. the more i get into Cynicism/Stoicism with my own philosophical studies, the more i feel it fits into the "Zen of Exercise." Its really an unparalleled high that unfolds in the long term. Im glad ive partied enough that I dont really care about it anymore, and I just have little flings a few times a year. The discipline factor is in every aspect, every single dietary decision I make may push me towards or away any goal I have, as gaining mass and the repetitive motions of fighting techniques and forms are almost opposites. The amount of control I have over my body is so much better than when I was just a weightlifter alone - and that control applies to all fronts, especially sex. I used to think I was a beast, but now I just feel pure Tiger all the time. I actually take my own personal athletic hobbies more seriously than my career.

im discovering now too that injuries are twice as detrimental. I tore some big ligaments and connective tissue a month ago and havent had time for the acupuncturist, and its fucking up my lifting and kicking routines. If i were doing one and not the other (lifting vs martial arts) id be healing a lot faster but I may end up having to take some time off and losing a lot of progress.

I kind of want to quit working period and just do lifting, parkour (something Im not into), and kung fu like all day every day. Dont think thatd keep the Lady too happy tho!

whew so it isn't my form you are referring to

I was intrigued (and still am) about this as well. I know nothing of this form of exercise, other than I played a lot of soccer as a little kid. There is actually a proper way to run? i thought you just "move really fast" for a long period of time and keep the heart and lungs pumpin, thats about it.

Have you ever run barefoot? You can't run on your heels like most people do in 90% of shoes. Let me offer a diagram of the differences between how you can run.

We can see that the "improper" form will also lead to higher stress in the knees and back. Gravity pulls down on your knee and when you stick your leg out in front of you for your next step, it adds stress to your knees, greatly increasing the chance for injury or fracture. In addition, your shins have to work to flex your toes up, which usually leads to what we call "shin splits".

On the other hand, when we use the "proper" form, as indicated on the right, we notice that there is no more angular stress being put on the knees, therefore decreasing your chances for injury. It will also greatly decrease "shin splits", as there is no need to flex the toes, since you land on the balls of your feet. Lastly, as is my experience, your calves will greatly benefit from the change of form, since you are bouncing off your toes instead of rolling off your foot.

It does take quite a while to get used to, but it is well worth the payoff.

Okay, back on topic! :P
