Good Documentaries

And one more to recommend - What is Reality? is a fascinating Horizon doc about... have a guess. Some interesting stuff about quantum computing (and the difficulties of working with a machine that only does what it is supposed to if nobody is looking at it :D) amongst other things. Was the one I though Chinup would enjoy if she happens to pop in to see this :)

That was brilliant. The stuff about black holes was mind boggling.

Just finished watching that Shinobi doc - was a goody. Particularly liked the emphasis on non-sensationalism, historical detail and all the artwork. Would've liked a bit more in the way of interviews and stuff with Japanese cos it was a bit Yank-heavy but they certainly seem to know their stuff at least. Shame the budget didn't stretch to a translator too - the bit with the American fella trying to talk through the family history of the great, great, great X 19 descendant of some famous warrior with no common language was slightly painful... but also kinda heart-warming in an odd way. The section on "The Last True Battle Experienced Ninja" was also great - would make for a fascinating doc in its own right cos he had one hell of a life story for such relatively recent times. Good stuff :)

Aye, its an excellent watch, i did enjoy it with a dram or 3 of Yamazaki 10 :)

There is a special edition dvd, with like 5 hrs of extra stuff, but nobody has ripped it yet

^ Special Edition would be nice cos it did leave me wanting more info about some of what it got into cos it was all a tad brief. Hopefully some naughty sausage will upload a torrent of it sometime :)

Watched that Horizon docu, very good.

I actually watched it three times cos the first too times I was too ketted to make much sense out of it :D

Was still good though.

Sniggered myself to sleep with The Aristocrats last night. Technically a documentary but basically just the history of the joke and fuckloads of variations on it. The Christopher Walken one creased me up - suits his style of delivery so well :D

In related news, have also been slowly ploughing through Penn & Teller's Bullshit. Most are pretty good but some I totally disagree with. The War on Drugs one is fitting for BL. There are at least 8 seasons in that linky if ya like that kinda thing :)

This afternoon's viewing will probably be - God, The Universe & Everything Else. Discussion about such matters between Stephen Hawking, Arthur C Clarke and Carl Sagan. Not seen it yet but should be a goody with those three as guests :)

As the Acieeed! thread seems to be going down well I thought I'd mention my current viewing...

Modulations: Cinema For The Ear - feature length doc about the history of electronic music with a lil something for everyone. Loads of interviews from Arthur Baker to Autechre, Prodigy to P-Oridge and a corker with FSOL during their massively pretentious period that made me giggle muchly. Emphasis is mainly on the late-90s UK scene (was filmed in 2000) but also covers Disco, Detroit Techno, Acid and other Goodies - even a smattering of Avant-Garde and Industrial. Am about halfway through and been good so far :)

Bastardy was an amazing doco about a heroin addicted Aboriginal gay actor / cat burglar from Melbourne that shows his life on the streets and how he survived.

and the same film maker made ' chasing Buddah' about a Buddhist Nun who spoke to prisoners on death row in Texas.

I loved the doco about Daniel Johnston called "The Devil and Daniel Johnston' and another one about ROcky Erickson from the 13th floor elevators called "you're gonna miss me.'

sounds intersting.

defo gonna have to check it out.

having studied sound engineering myself, have to say arthur baker is up there as one of my all time faves in my lifetime as to what he achieved for dance music/new york club culture/pop in the buisness sense of the industry :D

It was pretty good, Dee. Nothing really Earth-shattering for anyone who knows anything much about electronic music already but covers many bases and goes into the origins of early electronic music composers as far back as the 30s (the 10s in fact but doesn't go into any detail). Definitely worth a watch and the soundtrack isn't bad either :)

Can't recall whether I've posted this before but stumbled across another good site. The name rings a bell but my bookmarks got scrambled and I lost loads so is new (again?) to my bookmark folder - http://documentarystorm.com/. Plenty of Goodies to be found therein :)

Another recent find is http://www.disclose.tv/. Emphasis on conspiracy crap, UFOs, paranormal and the like (all of which I must admit I find quite entertaining) but also more serious stuff on science, politics, history, religion and so on. Worth a look.

Currently watching Ross Kemp - Extreme World: Chicago. Hear me out. Far better than his usual shite this one. Realistic and pretty feckin' brutal look at heroin addiction. His reaction to his first sight of homeless addicts shooting in the feet and neck will probably be reflected amongst you fellas who haven't seen that kinda stuff too. Even more so cos one of 'em goes over and starts fitting after shooting snowballs in front of him too. Really surprised at it's decency given the fact Ross Kemp is involved. Also, check out the look on the woman's face walking past who overhears his introductory speech about how the War on Drugs has killed more US citizens than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined =D

Up next - American Grindhouse. Possibly the greatest cinematic genre ever <3

ross kemp stuff is often alright shammy, the gang ones, especially the central/south american one's (as they have AKs and RPGs and shit rather than groups of scouse teens who share a pistol between 20 of them)

True. He just annoys me with his earnestness and big-belly hardman shtick is all :D

I quite liked some of his gang ones but they can be a bit annoying too sometimes - especially the UK ones as you mention. They just come over as dickheads. Which they usually are but he takes them way too seriously when they're just silly little boys really. He does go into the causes for gang violence and stuff far more than most similar docs do though. It's basically just him that annoys me but the programmes themselves are usually good. That one particularly so. Think it's the first of a series so it's probably been on tellybox or satellite already. New to me though and worth recommending.

yeah it's new was good stuff, i used to be really put off by his persona but he comes across as pretty non-judgemental and must have a huge set of balls.

Definitely. And as he's been doing docs for a good few years now the memory of Eastenders is gradually fading. Another few years making good docs and I may even forgive and forget ;)

Did he ever do one of his gang ones on Yardies in the UK? Now that would take serious balls and help balance out the 15yo Scouse charver stuff a bit.

I enjoy Kemps forays into nightmare situations, and admire his nerve. Although I hate his delivery method.....voice goes up into a pseudo Australian question stylie thing...(and hangs for a while)......then....down again..... and breath.

Apart from that, interesting stuff. Though the Congo one had some seriously harrowing stories. The exploded abdomen on a child was truly horrific stuff. Not sure how much more extreme this series can go now.

That Ross Kemp ep when he is in St Louis i think was good, proper sketchy scene as he is in some like shed with a few crips(or bloods..cant remember) and them showin him their merch, offerin him an oz for 70$ lol i bet off cam he bought up..lol

That Ross Kemp heroin one mentioned really was a corker. Go so far as to say one of the most accurate portrayals of junkydom I've yet seen even. Possibly. Best junkydoc ever has to be Dope Sick Love. Had me in tears that one. Way too near the knuckle. Talk about Harm Reduction. Should show that one at school when the local bobby brings his big box of cool-looking drugs in to show off to the kiddiez and then make it clear that they must stay away from the interesting-sounding Bad Things or die lonely in a ditch smelling of sick and wee.

Also tried to watch the second one of that Ross Kemp series but couldn't seem to get it to work. It's the next page on from the heroin one linkied last page if anyone else wants to have at it. Tis the one on the Congo and sounded good too.

Last night's late night viewing was Inside Planet Earth. Really enjoyed it. Not a subject I've ever really looked into but fascinating what goes on 'neath one's tootsies :)

The playlist for the so recently aforementioned Earth's core one above goes on to the complete series of A History of Britain which I'm currently watching. Never seen it before but glad I now am. Always been interested in early British history in particular. There's no getting away from the fact that Simon Scharma is one of the most irritating cunts that has ever existed in tellyboxland but he does turn out some great docs. Still wanna stab him right in his horrid smug face though.

Anyone interested in the brain should check this out.

This guy is a genius - he takes a stupidly complex issue and describes it in a way mere mortals can understand...

I (although I have an invested interest in this shit) highly recommend it
