Good Documentaries

Sounds good that, CS. Will have to have a looksee later :)

Today I have mostly been watching Clash of the Gods. Calling them documentaries is maybe pushing it slightly but was on the History Channel so gets the benefit of the doubt. It's more just an excuse to dramatise loads of old mythological tales with CGI, to be honest. Always was very fond of Greek myths so not complaining too much. Although everyone in ancient Greece appears to have really bad teeth and wear funny blue contact lenses. Few other non-Greek Gods & Heroes get their own episode too (Beowulf, Thor etc) but mostly Greek stuff. There's a few tenuous attempts at finding evidence that they were all based in historical events but blink and you'll miss it. The stuff about the connections and crossovers between ancient Greek mythology and the Christian mythology which replaced it is quite interesting though. But mostly just men, monsters, swords and CGI, to be honest.

That Ross Kemp ep when he is in St Louis i think was good, proper sketchy scene as he is in some like shed with a few crips(or bloods..cant remember) and them showin him their merch, offerin him an oz for 70$ lol i bet off cam he bought up..lol

lol the st louis drug dealer I think you mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlJ8VQN3PXE

The Extreme World Series is decent, the Ciudad Juarez one is good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAEhlqS_gnE
All out fucking war over there.

Ya. It worked okay for me too the next day. Must've just been a temporary thing. Didn't think much of it, to be honest. First one was way more interesting. Is that Mexico one the third? Will have to give that a watch too.

Also recently watched The Ascent of Man. One of those proper oldskool big, sweeping historical jobbies told by a very posh man convinced the British Empire should've existed since the dawn of time to keep those noble savages in check. But good nonetheless. The kinda thing that used to be primetime Saturday night telly when I was a nipper so possibly more nostalgia than quality but enjoyed watching it again.

Yeah Mexico one 3rd, not bad. I would've liked to see him interview some actual cartel leaders but that's just asking to be killed, he interviews a few prisoners and cartel runners etc. Fucked up place though that's for sure.

That's the one we're talking about. Worth a watch. The cartels are taking brutality to a whole new level and have so much money they can buy off most politicians, law enforcement, if they don't just kill them instead. Don't know why it's not made more news headlines. Probably because it's caused by the WOD.
Gives a good insight into how they operate. Good episode. I found the Chicago one best so far but this the next best one.

Good episode i agree. Life just seems so cheap in that city. People getting killed is the everyday reality, the locals who live there are not shocked by it as it seems so normal to them.

Yeah it's literally a warzone. over 3000 murders last year and getting worse.
Strange how El Paso over the border is one of the safest cities in the US in contrast. The cartels are some truly sadistic motherfuckers. They like putting execution videos on the net and leave severed heads on the streets to show who's boss, scary stuff.
All this over drugs and money. Think if the WOD does end it will start there. It's already spilling into the US.

Just finished watching that Ross Kemp one and didn't think it was up to much really. Said nothing other than lots of people get killed. No real insight into the situation. The interview with the ex-member at the end was the only interesting bit, to be honest. Depressing stuff but a bit of a pointless doc, in my opinion. Suppose it does show off how successful the War on Drugs is though.

Yeah he probably could've gone more into depth about how they operate and be a bit more philosophical about the situation rather than just driving around in an ambulance to random killings etc.
I think in that sort of place it's very difficult to gather information or get people to talk though as there is so much fear and asking too many questions could get you killed easily.
Was interesting about the London connections, I thought the Colombians dealt directly with gangs in the UK or Spain, looks like the Mexican's are taking over the cross Atlantic operation as well. Who knows.

Indeed. Although according to the informant they're not Mexican cartels at all they're internationally run with a number of nationalities at the top. Makes sense really. More organised it is the easier it is to get away with. Wish he'd asked him to tell 'em to stop sending such shite or crack a few cut-crazy dealer's heads though :D

Can see how it must be hard to get much useful information in a situation like that. Suppose they were hoping to get more in-depth with those involved like the Chicago one. Can't win 'em all I suppose.

The Good Science vs Bad Science Post

The Mysterious Origins of Man

Bad Science? Mostly. Think Chariots of the Gods with less aliens and more dinosaurs. Some of the "evidence" put forward was debunked years ago so fuck knows why they included it but some is still intriguing, I'd say. I think the evidence for a relatively advanced Ice Age civilisation is pretty good myself. Far from conclusive but there's enough there to be pretty suggestive, I'd say.

It is presented by Charlton Heston though so you can probably guess the quality from that :D

Underworld: Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age

Bad Science? Better science than the above, perhaps. Similar theme to the above (Ice Age civilisation wiped out by melting ice caps but retained as folk memory and in underwater ruins) only with far better evidence. Still definitely somewhat speculative and far from accepted but I do think there's something in it. How much is maybe true and how much is pure speculation piled atop a possible grain of truth is another matter. But ancient ruins don't build themselves so who did?

Lost Worlds, Vanished Lives

Bad Science? Don't be silly it's David Attenborough. Missed this series at the time (late 80s) it seems but watched it last night. Good stuff. Not related to the above two beyond the fact it deals with old stuff. Fossils in this case. Much more interesting than it sounds - mainly cos it's Attenborough probably. Some of the fossils are pretty incredible - the ones that retain details of soft tissues and stuff particularly.

Shall certainly be checking those out in the company of my cute librarian in the near future, Shammy! Cheers.

Ha! She may start looking at you funny and checking for tinfoil in the first two cases :D

Attenborough is hard to dislike whatever he does though so on safe ground with the third option - tis a four part series and they're all playlisted there :)

The lost Ice Age civilisation stuff does have some merit though I think. Perhaps. If it is true then it would certainly explain a few things that are otherwise rather odd and hard to explain though.

Heroin documentary

Dunno if this documentary has already been mentioned on here or not, its titled 'The dark end of the street'. I can't recall when it was filmed but it's a few years ago now. Basically it just follows a collection of different heroin addicts in San Francisco all doing that mexican tar heroin.
Its quite sad what happens to some of them and how bad their lifestyle is.
One poor girl only in her 20's I think ends up as a prostitute on the cheap end of the street, gets AIDS and dies if I remember right.
The film certainly dispels any ideas of heroin being a path to choose.

^ Tis a good 'un that. Not quite Dope Sick Love territory (hands down the best smack doc ever) but not bad. Tar just sounds nasty as fuck. I don't know how anyone could shoot that shit.

Going back to me lost Ice Age civilisation recommendation above, another one by the same fella who does the Flooded Kingdoms one - Quest For the Lost Civilisation. My viewing for tonight so may as well recommend it to accompany the other one :)
