Good Documentaries

Probably the best documentary ive seen was "The Cove" its about Japans slaugther of doplhins and theyre mercury poisoning; its won an oscar. ( I didnt use to give a shit about no dolphins ).
Another very interesting documentary is Ancient Aliens wich has aired on the history channel. Even if you dont believe in aliens you will see great monolithic structures and other mysteries of the earth among other things; you can find it in HD in youtube. I really recommend for you to see both of these documentaries ;)
EDIT: If you wanna watch some drug related documentary Reindeerspotting was quite good, its about a finnish junkies life.

If no one has said it, i got to page ten and got impatient, Ben a diary of a heroin addict is good, he films most of it himself.
Dan snow did a doc about the history of the british navy, twas interesting.
Funny as hell is Shaun Ryder the ecstacy and the agony, when the happy mondays singer was still getting battered before he went to the jungle, the bit where he is trying to excuse the white shit in the corner of his mouth as rennies ha.
The chemical generation on google videos, with contributions from Paul oakenfold, Todd terry etc.
Sorry I don't know how to do links, if someone could give me a dummies guide to links it would be much appreciated.

'Collapse' by Chris smith looks at the life and beliefs of 'conspiracy theorist' Michal Ruppert. Gave me a couple of sleepless nights this one

Waded through most of Australian Families of Crime last night. Interesting to hear about some notorious Aussie crims for a change instead of the usual US and UK crime stuff. They also have drugs and guns and psychos and stuff down there. Who'da thunk it 8o

Apparently the TV series Underbelly was based on the historical events discussed in quite a few of the episodes - long-running gang wars in Oz cities mostly in the 70s/80s. Not seen the series but have seen it mentioned. Was a pretty good series - standard crime stuff really but interesting to get the upsidedown perspective. Tis mostly gangsta stuff but there's a coupla serial killers in amongst it too if ya like that kinda thang :)

Also started to watch Pornography: A Secret History of Civilisation about that greatest of all Victorian inventions (the concept of pornography) and the history of sexually explicit images, art and so on from the dawn of time to the present day. Loved the stuff about what handwritten Medieval religious texts often had tucked away amongst the gold leaf borders and margins. Yowsers 8o

Could only watch the first episode cos you need to sign in to PooToob for most of the rest and I can't remember me password. Looks a goody though so may even open a new account to watch the rest.

Everything and Nothing presented by Prof. Jim Al-Khalili - It's a wonderful, insightful and brain-tingling 2 part documentary about where everything came from and, it turns out, that it came from nothing... Even though "nothing" doesn't actually exist :)
It was really, really fantastic ^_^

Excellent! Thanks for those, Monsta. Prof. Al-Khalili has really grown on me. Used to annoy me how he uses the exact same patterns of emphasis for everything he does to inject drama but I think that's maybe cos he really is so passionate about his subject. It's still slightly irritating but the topics he covers are excellent and he describes it all brilliantly. Tells a good tale. Albeit in precisely the same way no matter what the tale is. Will watch those later :)

In somewhat related news, re-watched The Elegant Universe last night. Saw it at about 4AM on C4 ages ago but missed the first one. Tis a three-parter about String Theory. Bit gimmicky with all the greenscreen stuff but it does look pretty and seeing as you can't exactly show footage of strings and equations they may as well fill it with eye-candy. Not come across many docs specifically about String Theory but would like to see more. This is a great introduction though and seems to have had some money spent on it. If the CGI and stuff doesn't make it clear then the half-hour long (maybe not quite) list of people who sponsored and donated funds to make it will :D

I started watching that Athene one a while back but it irritated me too much to stick with it, Botty. Does it get more interesting than the start cos it all seemed kinda dull and explained far better in other docs. I did only watch a bit of it though. Athene is unbelievably annoying :!

I didn't find it irritating Shamballs, his voice is kind of robotic but hey, the presentation is quite direct I thought. It starts of with the brain and mind etc, then expands/shrinks and the universe, quantum mechanics etc.

Gimmicky rather than irritating then, maybe. Rubbed me up the wrong way somehow either way. It did sound interesting on the face of it cos it covers so many areas. Can't see how it can really give much in the way of detail for any of 'em though really. Might give it another go. Was probably just not in the mood for it at the time.

You probably need to be stoned or on some sort of introspective drug to enjoy it. I tried watching it pissed but grew bored.
That life of a killer is a good watch, seems like such a friendly guy, yet he's killed several people.

Ha! I do believe I was a lil bit boozy when I tried to watch it. Tip noted :)

Aren't all psychokillers nice, friendly guys? And always quiet, polite and keep themselves to themselves too. Surely a warning to us all. Know a friendly fella? Keep close watch.

Yeah when I had Sky in the good ol days of prosperity I used to watch the late night doc's on Discovery/National Geographic on the mind of a psychopath, very charming and manipulative chaps they were. As if there isn't enough paranoia in this world already, don't trust the friendly ones LOL

^ Tis a good 'un that. Not quite Dope Sick Love territory (hands down the best smack doc ever) but not bad. Tar just sounds nasty as fuck. I don't know how anyone could shoot that shit.

Going back to me lost Ice Age civilisation recommendation above, another one by the same fella who does the Flooded Kingdoms one - Quest For the Lost Civilisation. My viewing for tonight so may as well recommend it to accompany the other one :)

I think one of the best Heroin documentaries i've seen has been 'Swansea Love Story'.
It's so heartbreakingly heartwarmingly heartbreaking. I can only use a triple oxymoron to describe it.

http://www.vbs.tv/en-gb/watch/rule-britannia/rule-britannia-swansea-part-1-of-6

In 2009, Swansea drug agencies reported a 180 percent rise in heroin use, and it’s visible on the city’s streets. Early one morning we meet a young, homeless couple named Amy and Cornelius in a city centre alley. As heroin-addicted alcoholics, they’re smack in the middle of two of South Wales’s most ever-present epidemics

I also think the fact the lad is called Cornelius is brilliant!

he got done recently in raids carried out because of that docu

That's a pisser :\

Have wondered before whether the level of access and detailed information subjects in documentaries about drug use in particular ever got them in trouble. I wish I could say that I couldn't believe plod would sink so low but we all know they could, would and now did. Cunts.

Thanks for the linky, Cherry. Not seen that one before so will be added to my To Watch list :)
