David Beckham degree at Staffordshire

By Sue Mott

12:01AM BST 15 Apr 2008

Students of Sport, Media and Culture at Staffordshire University are fortunate enough to study no less a weighty subject as David Beckham as part of their degree course.

Not the "wit and wisdom of", more the "haircuts and marriage of".

Professor Ellis Cashmore (this would be classic April fool material if the dates tallied, but the education system of this country really is this crazy) said: "We will be examining the rise of football from its folk origins in the 17th century to the central place it occupies in British culture.

We do have to concede that Beckham occupies a lot of our attention today. He's the object of a great many fantasies." Well, on that basis so is Philippe Senderos - that he will put in a transfer request being chief among them.

The degree is not in fact a David Beckham degree, it's just a module in their Sport, Media and Culture degree. Fucking Telegraph and their sensationalist reporting, they'll do anything for a stand-out headline.

It's one of the standard stories that does the round every now and then on slow news days. Previous people that supposedly have degree courses based on them include Madonna and the Spice Girls. None of them are actually degree courses but fill a few column inches and are suitably arousing for the Standards Are Slipping!!! brigade.

I'm sure a few of you will enjoy Narco Bling wot I dun did watch last night. Pretty much as the title: Mexican cartel folk and they're exotic weaponry fetishes and the like. They really do have the most godawful taste these cartel-types. Talk about nouveau riche 8)

That aside, it's a bit worrying all this cartel stuff. They really have been allowed to become stupidly rich and powerful. Actually set my :sus: conspiracy :sus: detector off. Given the current climate of there seeming to be a growing movement and appetite for drug legalisation, one of the few things that could really mess that up should it ever happen would be cartels and their associated corruptions and the like. I could just see the US finally agreeing to give legalisation a go in the full and certain knowledge that there'd be a shitstorm of violence and general horridness from the cartels on their doorstep with all the power and corrupt influence they bring. It's just about the only way legalisation could ever actually make the situation worse thus giving the excuse for "I told you so" and the obvious 'solution' being even stricter drug laws than we currently have. Albeit presumably only relatively briefly that such a flare-up could really last - and only if allowed to happen. Would be bloody hard - genuinely hard - to avoid massive blowback and fallout from vested interests that are quite so heavily invested though. Hmm... :sus::sus::sus:

Watched this earlier, was amazing

Buck

"Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will." So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine gruelling months a year helping horses with people problems.

BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life horse-whisperer, he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment.

Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses - and people - with his understanding, compassion and respect. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, BUCK is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.

That sounds incredibly lacking in promise but I bet it's actually very good. If/when it appears on the doc sites I'll bear it in mind, Dan. I like docs that I don't expect to enjoy that really surprise me. A good doc should be able to get you interested no matter what the subject.

Yeah mate its worth a watch

And this

The Whale

The true story of Luna, a young, wild killer whale who tries to befriend people on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island.

Chasing Ice

Acclaimed photographer James Balog was once a sceptic about climate change. But through his Extreme Ice Survey, he discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In CHASING ICE, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.

Travelling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his well-being in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. As the debate polarises America, and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, CHASING ICE depicts a heroic photojournalist on a mission to deliver fragile hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Osama Bin Laden: Shoot To Kill.

A fascinating blow by blow, moment by moment account of the whole operation. Really not a good one to watch for anyone about to embark on a PV session though. The powers of snoopdom exhibited by this program are enough to make even the most innocent of citizens slightly paranoid. They only found Bin Laden after following up on leads obtained by torture/interrogation of suspects. They obtained a list of phone numbers to snoop on, and from that identified a key 'personal courier'. They were able to identify and follow his vehicle right to Bin Laden from a satellite six miles up in the sky. The fact that the guy drove to a compound with a 12 foot wall topped with barbed wire, and the very private nature of the inhabitants aroused their suspicion.

Grounded : The Making of The Last of Us

Whether you're a gamer or not, this documentary provides an interesting insight into how games are made these days, and how they created what are probably the most believable characters I've ever experienced in a game. Particularly interesting for me since its what I do for a living :)

Jesus, you have a dream job there. That must be fantastic, cant imagine it being too much of a struggle to get out of bed for that.

I dunno it can and cant. I am a developer and you could have a great time working on a cool game with loads of creative input.
Alternatively you could be working on a huge team developing the new Call of Duty game and spend all your time working on the texture colours of a cave. Not hugely inspiring
Agree though The Last of Us is a really great game..... Naughty Dog ftw

My dream job would be getting paid for playing tunes for a couple of hours a night, for a few days of the week. Im good on 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, have a bit of a gap in the early 2000s until meph came along and got me right back into all the up and coming bands again. Since meph disappeared i havent really been exploring new music very much, im probably misssing out on some stuff I'd like. Should start tuninng into xfm and radio6 again, they play the type of music i like, and its virtually guarenteed to hear something new that Id like at least every 30 mins or so. Some of them take a few listens to grow on you, so it does involve quite an investement of time, unless you just have the radio on constantly in the background. I could do that either through my tv or try and get my pc 5.1 speakers sorted out, i wouldnt be stuck to my pc desk chair with headphones then and could be doing other stuff at the same time.
