A major complicating factor is that most cars in the UK, if not the rest of Europe, are manual, so you don't just point the fucker in the direction you want to go and change the speed. You have to get comfortable with doing a little dance over three pedals as your revs increase. This setup also makes it possible to do handbrake turns which are basically the whole point of driving.
We also have a thing called round-abouts to save time getting places, instead of having a 4 way junction with traffic lights every time a few roads meet.

I didnt even realise till recently like the MAJORITY of cars in the US are auto
