Gibberings CCXII -- It's all about the length of the pocket clip .....

Speaking of trashy glam....I've got a faux-fur coat that i can't decide whether to take with me or not.
It's really not that warm, but i like wearing it when i'm tripping and pretending i'm either some decrepit rock star (a la Peter Perrett), or some kind of furry animal (depending on exactly how much i'm tripping).
It will take up a senseless amount of room to pack - and i'll be living with vegans....!

I'm trying to think of the right person to gift it to.
Maybe i should give it to my friend the dodgy street poet folk singer who lives in a psychiatric institution.
He could rock it good.

Sprout! So happy to see you back-missed my fellow headbanger!

@Koneko -you cannot have too many scarves/shawls. I need a wardrobe just for my collection. And SHOES!

And I thought my 42 chequered shirts was a lot...

Do you wear anything else with these shirts - or just go au-natural with them? ;)

I'm sure he won't mind me posting this, but it's his profile picture on Plenty Of Fish.

First you underestimate my culinary persuasions, now you're shitting on Fruit t' Loom!?

I actually ordered another load of plain coloured t-shirts from them a few weeks ago %)

I never got a date from SJ. We really clicked until our first Skype chat. He told me that his pashmina was worth more than my entire wardrobe and he wouldn't be seen dead with me.

He logged off before I could offer to remove my offensive clothes :(

"Never judge a book by it's cover" eh Don.

Especially when its a good looking face on the bio-pic ;)

Naw, i'm blond, wouldn't be caught dead in spandex or whatever that shirt is... and i gotta admit, feather boas (and dating apps...!) aren't really my thing.
Purple is my favourite colour though - you got that much right.

I used to be quite inspired by Brian Jones...if he'd had a lovechild* with John Lydon, circa 1976

* Brian spawned a depressing amount of love children, but (un?)fortunately history and biology conspired against him and Mr Rotten being literally responsible for my existence. Just a few of my sartorial influences hehe.

Heh, because of the music I tend to listen to, a lot of the entities in my trips have a face like that :D

On a train to Sydney. I quite like trains. Looking forward to getting to Sydney and enjoying the big smoke for a few days. Conference, record shopping and good chinese food. Should be fun.

Red eye records?
Yes for sure. I have spent thousands in that place since i was in my teens. There are a couple of other shops in Newtown but not sure i will have the time to go there. Red Eye is quite close to where i am staying.

Is Egg records still in newtown?

I absolutely love the old Red Eye (and Black Eye) record label.

They released this fucking gem ("born to be punched" was the label's first release - don't watch the second video in the link, it's fucking rubbish - but it's the only version of the "born to be punched" promo video on youtube these days) by Aussie punk legend and good mate of mine James Baker (also of the Victims, the Scientists, the Beasts of Bourbon, Hoodoo Gurus).

Fucking dodgy track (so bad it's amazing) - with tex perkins on drums, stu spasm on bass. I have the original 7", and red eye records (the record store are stil pretty great - but it's a shame they long ceased to be a label).

When i was younger it was a weekend mission. Catch train to Sydney and do the Waterfront, Phantom and Red Eye circuit. I have all the different Waterfront Nirvana releases and literally tonnes of punk and grunge from those days. Lots of rare stuff. Never seen the above record though. Anyway time for a shower and off to Golden Century chinese restaurant with some girls i went to uni with. Cant wait. Pippies in XO sauce the house specialty is to die for.

Not sure about Egg records. I think they are. Not going to get out there this trip though.

A couple of years ago they were doing the whole "bring out your dead" verge-side rubbish collection, that they do here.
(I'm not sure if you guys have anything similar in the UK? It's basically a yearly thing where councils come and collect your garbage; since all the landfill sites are full/expensive to use or whatever)
Anyway, i found a whole box someone was throwing out of the most beautiful silk scarves.
Must've been about 20 of them.

I took the lot of em, love me some rock'n'roll dandy scarf action.
Most seemed hand-sewn, and some had golden threads woven through them, which always looks sweet under stage lights.
Street-trash gutter glam. That's my style %)

My favourite pair of jeans (off-white with black stripes) were rescued from a bin outside the flats we were scoring from one night many years ago. My favourite ever pair of kecks (midnight blue crushed velvet) went missing around the same period under mysterious circumstances - a topic that remains a sore point until the present day :|

Some of my favourite clothes were found (literally) in the gutter.
We also have this weird (cool) thing here where garbage dumps have little shops attached to them, and they sell all sorts of crap that is brought to the dump that they think people might want.

On one particular visit to one of these "tip shops", i found a pair of insane psychedelic 70s designer sunglasses (Lanvin is the brand - apparently it's some kind of designer label that some of my friends were very jealous of), a sheet-music stand (always handy), a paisley scarf, a really nice leather jacket and a few other things.
All up, cost me $15 AUD, which was a steal. I could probably get hundreds for the vintage shades alone.
I love hunting through crazy second-hand stores, junk shops, deceased estates, dumpsters...and so on, because most of the other people that do that kind of thing are looking for - i dunno, lawnmower engines or old bottles or something.
I'm looking for trashy (stylin') rock'n'roll clothes and stuff.
The sort of things people's grandmothers throw out.

Man, velvet pants! I always wanted some velvet stovepipe jeans, and i randomly found some in a junk shop the first time i ever took mescaline. That was a good day indeed :)

Apropos to nothing but Newtown was where I stayed in Sydney. Highly impressed by the diversity. In restaurants anyway. And someone was selling Socialist Worker outside the train station.

Newtown is one of the few parts of Sydney i like.
In the 80s Sydney had a great underground rock'n'roll scene, but it's predominantly mainstream clubs dominating what is left of that city's nightlife these days. Please someone correct me if i'm wrong....

And new "lock-out" laws that prohibit most afterhours bars from staying open and serving drinks past 1am (is that right?) due to a series of unfortunate violent incidents around King's Cross.

Obscene gentrification; Newtown is one of the few little bohemian pockets left - surrounded by masses sprawling suburbs.
The beautiful old parts like Paddington that were full of decrepid terrace houses in the 60s and 70s, populated by artists, hippie squatters and various 'alternative-lifestyle' types has long since been taken over by the stock brokers, merchant bankers and other white-collar wankers.

No offence to any Sydneysiders - but the inner-city used to be considered old, run-down, cramped - and everyone wanted a quarter-acre block in the suburbs.
Now the suburbs are so car-conjested and sprawling that the old inner-city suburbs are (for the most part) gentrified, worth obscene amounts and house millionaires. My sister lived in Paddington for a bit, and it was great for a holiday, but i wouldn't want to live in sydney.
Rural NSW is a different story...i'm looking forward to going and visiting consumer one of these days, i want to see more of that part of the country, sample some of the local psychedelicacies and skinnydip in the Pacific :D
