Geographicaly different dancing styles

I'm from Canberra, and i must say i danced the old Sydney style, butmainly coz i partied there more than at home, due to the lackof events here... =( But now i feel our music has changed and so has our style. I'd have to agree with Magoo, from a while back in this post, that the CBR style is halfway between SYD and MEL. (Hey Magoo, c u next weekend) If thats the case then it must be a geographical thing.
Also have you ever tried to show someone how you dance and not been able to do it, unless you were actually at an event?? I have, and its damn hard without the whole vibe and music. Give it a go.

I dunno how I dance. I just do.
Although I was at a rave in toronto earlier this year, and I was chatting away with (please allow me a bit of name dropping here) John '00' Fleming (yeah big deal you're probably asking who's that but I got to meet Paul Oakenfold the same night too

) ANYWAY I was dancing around and my friend told him I was from Sydney and he said 'yeah you dance like a Sydney girl'. YEAH!!! I was sooooo proud
smile.gif

hee hee I didn't ever think I would have an opportunity to mention that little converstation but life can be good sometimes

LOL small things....

I also managed to pick up a bit of the American rave dancing style while I was over there, which sounds a little like Melbourne 'crazy legs' dancing. But it could be completely different. Explaining dancing styles is like explaining music ie I'm fucking hopeless at it

I just wish I could liquid. It's been borrowed from breakdancing and has evolved to include glow sticks. When it's done well it looks fucking awesome.
oh and mona, if you happen to stumble on this thread again, take notice of the post on the previous page at the bottom (can't be bothered seeing who it was) who said he smoked so much pot at dnb events. See??? I wasn't pulling that pot comment out of my arse

Over the last few months, I have been working in Melbourne through the week and partying back home in Sydney on weekends.
Going from The Laundry in Fitzroy or Teri Arki Anarki at Hi Fi Bar in Melb city on Thursdays - to Plastic in Syd on Fridays, I have been able to compare the different dancing styles, week in and week out.
The main difference is Melb = focus on feet, "Melbourne Shuffle", Syd = focus on arms and stompin. (was going to write way more details....just realised how tired I am...big day....maybe later...)
Both cities love their clubbing.....it's just all good!......

I don't know about other people, but I saw a few people while I was out in Melbourne who looked like they were auditioning for Riverdance, ie the Melbourne Shuffle

But I can't talk, sometimes I think, fuck, I do to!!
smile.gif
It's all good.

Yeah, well when i'm in brisbane rocking the floor, people form a circle and clap me and chant "Supa-shuffle, supa-shuffle"...
Some people are shit hot, and some people are just not. I'm dreading the day when someone makes light of the fact i most likely fit in the latter category.
Good dancers make the crowd and the atmosphere so much better, i hate seeing people with no rhythm or too many roids trying to boogie, when they just make the place look untidy. They could at least stand up the back out of my circle.

very cool topic....funny thing is, there are definately a lot of differences, like Adelaide for example...there are so many different styles, but there is a definate SA look to it all...every party we've gone to Interstate (NSW,VIC) we get people looking and asking where we're from...probably due to the fact we'll do the whole Melbourne shuffle thing and then break out in a full aerobics ab workout style to dark and hard D&B...or even a pounding tech beat...
weird, but there is a definate difference, but it is funny how Melbourne people have the whole shuffle thing and we seem to have a harder version of that...guess that depends on the music of choice, to me Melbourne is a more techy scene whereas here is a more ravey(hoover!!)/D&B scene...
the harder the music the harder the dancing...
anyways, EF2000 tomorrow night, SPace DJ'z, Bryan G...oh yeah....

d+b always goes down a treat with the melburnites because our shuffle appears to work itself into a 'roll'.so you've got the shuffle in the foot area with the upper body doing sexy convulsive-type sways.and then ofcourse its the hands in the air for the rewind.its just like the track about us; melbourne madness.indeed it is all so good.-chem.

im sorry but i just have to be up myself for once .. come to melbourne and witness the MíkeySåmmy dancing phenomena - "how the hell does he stay standing up??!" hahahahhhahh...

in perth i see lots of people have got there own unique Style of dancing which is kewl
smile.gif
but what ANNOYS me the most is girls that just stand there NOT doing anything!!!! keeping that hair and makeup in PErfect plaCE, daMMIt they are taking up Good dAncing space... just DANce Would yOU!!!!
smile.gif

yeah we have a lot of posers in perth (people who stand around with redbull in hand and don't move from spot all nite) but when i see them leave in the morning looking all neat and clean i laugh . . . the better time i have the more trashed i look in the morning
smile.gif

can't really describe perth dancing style, as for me though it's sort of eqaul foot, let, arm and hand movement with occasional head movement all to the beat of course, only pausing when there's that break in the song where it's all 'mushy' before the bass slams again (house) as for techno, yeah what i said before minus the break . . .

In brisbane as heaps of people have said earlier there is heaps of bouncing, spins and a lot of high up knee dancing i suppose u could call it. I am soo used to bouncing around on the dancefloor that i get frustrated if i'm stuck in a room playing trance and have to run off to the hi nrg room although i do like dancing to funky breaks and drum n bass to get that whole butt shaking thing going j/k

*sigh*
The perfect opportunity to sample a few different dancing styles, and to find out which is the best, and we let it slip by!
We shoulda had a dance-off at the start of Earthcore!
Ahh well, I did get a look at some examples of different dancing styles, and most of them seem to invovled pretty basic stomping of feet, and some arm waving. Others jumped and bounced around (lozz was awesome, bouncing and twisting all over the place... very entertaining
wink.gif
) I don't know if anything that I saw was typical of any specific state tho...
But the Melbourne shuffle still rules, and MikeySammy and ican'tfeelmylegs know how to do it well!

I'm making an appearance in the lovely city of melbourne in about four weeks, and i guess i can display what brisbane calls "dancing" for you all. If you laugh and point, i will most likely cry and call my dad to come and get me.

Show em what we're made of Bro!!!
even tho i probly cant compare to u cus i hav a demented style.
smile.gif

DEMENTED!!! hehehe
we r ravers... we... r used to seeing everyone dance to the music... i wonder what normal everyday non ravers think when they see us all dancing!!! LOL
have u guyz always noticed that at a street rave (chapel st. fest/st. kilda fest/brunswick st. etc. etc.) u'd always get a crowd watchin' at the back???
ie. Chapel st. fest. 2000
There was the main stage... then ppl dancing in the street next to Euphemism... and around the back of the ravers where the street ends there's juz a whole bunch of onlookers stopping juz to have a gawk at us!!! hehehe... yay i'm gunna bring a video cam. to st. kilda and do interviews!!! *giggle*
N e way... this topic was great ass fun to read! It distracted me from my vacuuming.. so.. now i gotta get back to it!!! :P
Whoever tried to describe the melbourne shuffle - the dood that said that it looks like putting out a cigarette - PEEERRRRRFECT description there!!! If u dun get that description juz imagine two feet twisting at the ankles which "move" where the dancer goes.
I never knew that we had a name for the way we danced!!!
I'm gunna be makin' a lil vid. wif a collection of some raves i been to and sendin' it to the US. If n e one else wants a copy... uhhh.. email me???
but... yea... n e way... i heard from a friend of mine that when she went up to sydney that they didn't dance.. or summin??? and when they did dance everyone juz stood back and went "wow"!?!? so i guess it's true wat they say about us melbournites!!! yay for us!!!
lez all go for a boogie!!! *shuffle shuffle shuffle spiiiinnnn shuffle spiiiiiiinn shuffle shuffle*

my dance style has evolved from lookin around and seeing what i think looks fun and cool, and then altering it so that it suits the way my body likes to move. hehe, ive been likened to a helicoper cross pixie cross psycho spinning top. hehe. if i dont have enough room (im 6'2 and not exactly lanky) people have and annoying tendancy to get hit several times within seconds if the music is going off.
smile.gif

P.S. sorry to all those nice ravers who i have accidentally clobbered over the years, ive said sorry at the time and i hope you can forgive any bruising.
