i'm saying the problem is not "why aren't white people writing about other kinds of people", the problem is why aren't POC encouraged to become writers or television directors etc etc.
don't demand others to.
don't whine about how white people aren't writing enough POC characters, talk about the institutional issues that are alienating POC from pursuing careers in the arts.

and i'm also saying that there's more to feeling represented in something than the color of your skin, that's really superficial to assume that i relate to these characters more than you because we have similar skin tones when the actors are not of the same heritage, culture, background, ancestors, or region as me.

and quit acting like everyone whose fair skinned is in this fancy club and all like have a ball together and are all the same cookie cutter "white" person when there's infinite races, cultures, ethnicities, regions, countries, etc that make up "whiteness". it's not just WHITE.

i swear POC act like we're all racist but they're usually the one's only seeing color IMO.

^It is perhaps not a coincidence that POC are often depicted as bad guys in sci-fi and fantasy books and movies. For example...

In other words I do agree that POC do get a bad wrap sometimes in books and films. Also in movies it seems POC are always fucking stereotyped. When was the last time you saw an Asian character for example playing something other than a nerd or a martial arts expert?

Am I saying white writers are all racist? No. But perhaps they need to write the "other" a little better?

There's an Afghani writer on the best seller list right now --- Khaled Hosseini. He's also the author of The Kite Runner which is required reading in a lot of schools. Kazuo Ishiguro is constantly on the best sellers list and his book Never Let Me Go was turned into a popular film not too long ago. Junot Diaz won a Pulitzer like four years ago for his book.

Besides, the NYT is hardly a litmus test for 'good writing'. Two words: James Patterson. Better yet: E. L. JAMES. The best music isn't found on the Billboard Hot 100. Unless you consider Selena Gomez and Bruno Mars among the best contemporary artists.

that's not my point though, my point is that the issue is that more POC aren't encouraged to enter the arts. THAT'S where the racial issue lies in, not with the lack of POC in white author's fiction. the lack of POC authors in the fiction/fantasy/sci-fi what have you genre as a whole.
think the huge hits that have been made into adaptations: HP, LOTR, THG, GOT, etc etc. all written by white people, produced by write people, and directed mostly by white people. so, instead of complaining about characters in this microcosm of white people's worlds, why aren't there POC creating the worlds, which would then be a microcosm of their own?

it's an institutional problem, it's not a OMG THEY NEED TO WRITE US IN problem.
how about there is no "they" and POC write themselves in.

I am dead inside. Rob Starker was my favourite character. I don't know what I'm going to do now ! :O Hoping the Starke sister (the youngest one) ends up being some kind of Joan of Arc character but will rebel against the Lannisters in the Starke name. Fight the power !
