we settled on 4 as it was a good compromise of ease of use(4 is the default number of items in a BL poll) and usefullness (from an information point of view).
at this stage, it would probably be too much effort to go back and change it. besides, forum moderators should be posting messages, not working on worthless stuff like this
it's only a 5% difference in granularity - do you feel it would add that much more to the system to alter the rating scale?
just a few comments for anyone who is interested...
As wanderlust has already posted, the Film & Television forum has recently changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star system. The new rankings will be prospective only, meaning that they will not be applied to threads in which a poll has already been posted. The decision to update the ratings was reached after considering forum user suggestions as well as discussion among the mods. The five-star system is meant to provide more variance and accuracy in the ratings, hopefully creating a more nuanced gauge of film opinion.
One of the benefits of moving to five stars is having a middle rating (3 stars) for average movies. Formerly it was not possible to select a middle point. And rather than having so many people selecting the top rating, as they do now, the greater spread is meant to give users more choices.
Four-star ratings have traditionally been divided up into half stars, effectively making it an eight-tier ranking system. While moving to a half star system was also discussed, in the end, this might have created too great a spread between ratings, making it difficult to spot any ratings trends, since each category would have been filled with so few votes.
Anyhow, thanks to the people who have given us input on this. As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to post them in the forum suggestions thread or PM a moderator.
cheers,
