TWO WEEKS ago i went to get tickets to the midnight screenings, but they were all sold out in the three major city cinemas. So, it's one am for me and my bunch. Work knows we're all going to be sick on thursday.

Episode I was lackluster and captured NONE of the Star Wars feel.

Episode II was one of the worst pieces of cinema I can remember. And no, I'm not overstating the case. Jedi falls thousands of feet into the passenger side of a hovercraft, and the guy driving says, "What took you so long?" If that movie didn't carry the Star Wars label it'd have sunk like a stone without comment.

But Lucas may have pulled it out. With so many positive reviews, plus the excessively dark theme, I've changed my mind. I'll go see it.

But I'll wait until it's been out a month. I've finally become old enough that seeing a movie opening night, fighting for seats, and being crammed in with fanboys no longer appeals to me.

haha, last night, we were just sitting around and decided to go see the movie. Arrived amongst the uber dorks dressed as characters at about 11:20, got a ticket, went in, watched the movie, wasn't overly impressed by the acting but the cg was top notch. Next day I found out people had been waiting in line for as long as a day.

I saw it this morning. I was very impressed and really enjoyed the film. I'll probably be seeing it again this weekend with skywise %)

With more action than all the other 5 movies put together, ROTS maintains a nice fast pace and never dulls. While it beautifully connects the PT to the OT, it also stands out on it's own with absolutely stunning special effects.
Unfortunately, like the rest of the PT, the dialogue and story compromises fun and adventure (which is the whole appeal of the OT to me) in order to spell out and explain the universe at the start of Ep4.
This movie's gonna freak alot of little kids out. It's violent and very, VERY dark.

I saw it today (Thursday) at 11:50AM. Was WAY better than the last 2. It was a pretty emotional movie. I have to admit I had watery eyes at specific points. Watching Ankin turn to the darkside was really moving along with the extermination of the Jedi especially the younglings. :(

It did have a lot of emotion, except for darth vadar. after he was all fixed up and learned of padme's death, that whole scene that he's crushing shit was just embarassing... darth vadar= NO EMOTION!

ok, so i have to disagree with the "never dulls" comment...
ut dragged, they all have dragged at some point

but cg was awesome, a little diappointed it was just all computer work though.
the 'tie up loose ends' deal was done effciently and interestingly.
death of the jedis was pretty cool... but if youre a jedi and use the force wouldnt you sense the disturbance, sense that someone was about to shot you from behind (such as bar scenes with jedis turning at the last possible second)?
i agree with the vader-death of padme scene- left something to be desired. it was leaning a bit towards hokey and comical in some ways than towards tearjerking having his heart cut out moment
anakin grew it such depth from a snotty, annoying, snivling kid to the deep, loving and full of hate, anger and the darkside adult. the flatness of his character has been removed

3 out of the 6 people i sat with fell alseep, hrm.

fave scene?

the dizzying exchange between Anakin and Padme

I love you

I love you more

I love you because you love me

I love that you love me

Your love clouds your eyes

I like th clouds in my eyes

Are you saying you don't see the real me?

I love you/

I kid you not.

This is my fave scene b-c it verifies that Lucas
cannot direct, cannot write, and should stick
to what he does best:

hire good 3D programmers.

now, there was the issue of didn't Leia say she knew
her mother and remembered her being sad when Luke
asked...? i'm sorry, but she remembers her birth?

doesn't make sense

the Yoda-Chewbacca thing was cute, tho.

R2D2 kickin' robot ass was awesome

i could have done without some much Palpatine
vampire-like teeth gnashing... also, another
bad directing issue was the fact that you
couldn't tell if Palpatine was REALLY getting
his ass handed to him by Mace or if he was faking.

Also, didn't you get the impression that the Master Sith
was Palpatine's master, and he was the apprentice who
killed him after learning how to control life...???

What ROTS needed was a dark revelation of some sort...
if not to Vader, at least to us, somehow... like, since Palpatine
(may have) known how to create life from the essence of
the force, and since Anakin was father-less in his Christ-like
birthing, wouldn't it have been cool that the Emperor MADE
Anakin...?

"No, Anakin... I am your father..."

or at least made it to where WE would know the truth, even
if Vader was never told...

I dunno... I don't think this series was really thought out
too well....

and the Darth Vader Frankenstein-ian moment was
totally contrived.

but, at least the cosmic battle scenes and rapid
space craft movement scenes weren't as
convoluted and hard to follow as AOFC

now, there was the issue of didn't Leia say she knew
her mother and remembered her being sad when Luke
asked...? i'm sorry, but she remembers her birth?

She was referring to her adopted mother (I'm guessing), because that's the only mother she grew up with...

well, apparently, that's what we have to think now

butthere's no point in Luke asking about her.

Luke specifically wanted to know about THEIR mother....

that's why he asked... why would he give a fuck about her adoptive mother? he knows about his father, now... he wants at least one little thing that he can know about his mother... he just learned practically that Leia was his sister and this is the first chance he's gotten to tell her alone, away from everyone else... so he has to ask Leia for it... that's why he was so sad at her response... because he knew, now, of the tragedy of his father, and now, the tragedy of his mother.

so, yeah, it's easily explained away... given this new information... but it shows, yet again, that Lucas is a bad writer, even beyond his hokey lines...

dont' get me wrong, tho, i liked this movie alot.

the CGI might have been TOO perfect, especially in the Yoda-Palpatine part... and this was the best of the prequels... and arguably, imo, better even than RETURN OF THE JEDI.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT

well let me be the first to chime in with a disappointed viewpoint of the film. Don't get me wrong...I enjoyed the action and it had the elements it needed to be a nice and tidy package to connect the timeline, but the hype machine effectively ruined it for me.

I just didn't find it the turn to the darkside that dark in the end. It had amazing promise and potential during my favorite scene (The Chancellor/Mace/Annakin scene), but I would've enjoyed more of a hunt and destroy approach with how the Jedi Order was disposed of. Some of them looked like complete buffoons in terms of how they were dealt with.

The cheesiness of some of the dialogue's been pointed out already. The non-stop action was nice, but I never really felt the sense of any real epic battles taking place. I just saw a lot of in-battle scenes that looked nice overall. None of them gave me that epic feeling that was captured so well with the opening of Empire and the climax of Jedi. The final two jedi duels were the closest to reaching that feel. Plus, there were no aerial battles (no noteworthy ones from the entire PT in fact) outside of the first few minutes of the film.

Natalie Portman was given practically nothing to work with in this film...and her contribution reflected that. Same goes with Jimmy Smits.

In the end, it was a visual feast that should please most fans...but after two viewings, I found the luster wears off quickly. It can be said that overall, this is probably the best of the three prequels, but personally I found myself least satisfied with this particular one after the initial viewing.

^
I have to agree with ya LD.

Personally, I kept thinking that the whole thing looked like one big Powerpoint presentation.

I loved it. It is a fitting end movie for an epic series. and only about one min of Jar Jar time.

The film had certain conditions that it had to follow, as the last film it had to wrap up so many loose ends. It satisfied my curiousity. As I was watching it I felt I could anticipate what was going to happen next because the story could onl have been told in a handful of ways to finish the series.

Best one yet for me, and I wasn't watching tv or reading about it so i didn't get hyped up.

What I knew was going to be shithouse about this movie was, i.e. any scene where there is 'dialogue' between Plank-Boy (Hayden Christiansen) and Clothes-Horse (Natalie Portman). It practically made me want to vomit listening to the sheer trite that was coming out of their mouths. Natalie Portman is a fantastic actress, and I agree she had nothing to work with here, Hayden Christiansen actually wasn't too bad in all the other scenes, but the lovey dovey crap was so forced and contrived and so badly written. Aaaah so frustrating.

Luckily the rest of the film rocked. I went in not knowing exactly what to expect but without high expectations, although I promised myself and others I'd go in with an open mind. I must say that I really enjoyed everything else except for the shitty dialogue. I don't know if I'll see it again soon, but I will see it again. It was great, I still don't think it can compare to The Empire Strikes Back, but it is difficult to compare the two trilogies...

Anyway, I was greatly entertained, and definitely not disappointed.

CB :)
