FILM: Ghostbusters III

Not a complaint.

The film has been in the works for twenty years. The original script that Akyroyd and Ramis came up with was one of the worst ideas that I have ever encountered. Since then, there have been half a dozen scripts.

When studios profit from films, they want to make sequels. Ghostbusters 1 & 2 were big hits, so obviously it's not demand or funding that's the problem.

Although Reitman says Murray hasn't read the script (if he's at the stage of making press release statements about a film that is yet to be produced, then why wouldn't he have contacted the cast?), Murray has rejected numerous previous scripts.

So now it's being written by someone else. Who? The guys who brought you the hilarious Jack Black comedy, Year One (which is, not coincidentally, one of Ramis' recent train wrecks).

Please heed my posts Companion. I beg of you.

Okay. I'll take heed. Just this once though. It does piss me off that he opted to direct an Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy over diving head-first into the Ghostbusters sequel. And Year One was one huge steaming pile of shit. Goddamn you, Reitman!

Dan Akyroyd wrote 'Blues Brothers 2000' at the same time as writing 'Ghostbusters III: Ghostbusters in Hell'. One of them was made into a film. The original idea for 'Ghostbusters III' was that a vortex to hell opens up over Manhattan allowing travel between the city and hell. Akyroyd got the idea after hearing Manhattan referred to as ''Hell's Kitchen''. Not only is this a terrible idea, the script itself must have been considerably worse than 'Blues Brothers 2000' - which boasted dancing zombies.

I'd prefer it if they never made Blues Brothers 2000. Old washed up actors/directors returning to make sequels to 20 year old films doesn't really work. Indiana Jones IV, Blues Brothers 2000, Star Wars: Episode 1, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

It's a pretty safe bet that the reason Ghostbusters hasn't started pre-production is because there are serious problems. I don't think he's opting to do the Kutcher film. The above interview is dated the 9th of January 2011 and Reitman says Murray hasn't even read the script, so obviously he (Murray) hasn't agreed to do it. It's likely that he's read and rejected a previous version of the script.

Same thing happened with Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones. They kept rewriting the fourth film and Ford kept rejecting it till eventually they offered him so much money that he didn't care whether or not he liked it. Murray will probably cave in a similar fashion (it's not as if a bad Ghostbusters film is going to put a dent in his reputation) and reprise his role as Venkman. (An earlier version of the script had Murray playing a minor character as the ghost of Venkman.) With the majority of the cast on board, the film will probably be made either way.

After the Kutcher thing Reitman's still got to finish up with Junior 2: The Twins. Apparently Shwarzenegger (who, fresh off his governor gig, was eager to work with Reitman again) reprises his role as Dr. Alex Hesse. This time he's pregnant with twin Danny De Vito foetuses. De Vito said working inside Shwarzenegger was an unforgettable experience. "I felt safe," said the 65 year old actor, "it was warm."

I have to agree; I've noticed that--with very few exceptions--sequels that come out several years (let alone decades) after the original are uniformly garbage.

they just made a friggin yogi movie. expect all of your sentimental loves to be raped hard sooner or later. it's simply the way of things.
