Favorite metal bands of all time and why

Black Sabbath (their first four or so albums)

Mainly because they're almost proto-metal, and I'm more of a psychedelic rock guy anyway.

Not really into the new stuff, but what I've heard I like.

I also enjoy Dethklok, even though they're technically a "virtual band". ;)

I use to listen to him I have gotten more into the hardcore metal scene. But I was also wondering if anyone could recommended a good relaxed metal band like type o negative I could use that to help me sleep just something slow and mellow. the rolling stones has paint it black which is a great song type o negative did a cover . I don't know if the rolling stones is anything like type o negative I haven't heard much of their music.

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Pantera

I'm seeing too many new names, these are the best of the best in my opinion. Fairly big influences for most too.

Metallica: Because they were my first concert and the first metal band I ever listened to. Also, their first 3, maybe even 4, albums are one of the greatest and most influential metal albums of all time.

Iron Maiden: Great all around band. I love them not just for their music but for the way they have managed their careers. They have never sold out, always do things their own way, and have somehow sold 70 million + records world wide with very little radio/mainstream media support.

I've only spotted two people who name Meshuggah. These guys are easily my favorite metal band. Amazing composition in their songs, the lyrical content and subjects of the songs, the solos, the drums, the heavy as fuck bass.

All combines to form what i think is a new level of heavy metal. Deffinatley one of the most stand out metal bands of our time, if not ever. I've heard them named as the most influential metal band? Can anyone confirm/correct me on that?

I'm actually about to detox from them for a while. They've been playing in my car and on my ipod for over a year staight, so i think i should give them a rest.
One of the biggest reasons for them being my favorite band is that i don't get tired of their music.

cheers

Death, Mastodon, Agalloch, Weedeater, Bongzilla, Electric Wizard, Baroness, High on Fire, Black Cobra, Bison BC, Buzzov*en, Carcass, Celtic Frost, Dissection, Down, Neurosis, Isis, etc etc

I've been listening to metal for about 15 years now. The two bands that have stuck with me:

Acid Bath
Zao

What is Metal to me, the why and how...

Yo Metal desciples!! Waddup!?!?

It's f$%^* great to get logged in to a site where I can worship at the altar of the greatest musical revolution since the original Rock-N-Roll!!

I'm Old School.

I'm going to spread the faith...METAL music has been there for me than alot of sh$%

To ya's new schoolers...Y'all know it sounds great. Maybe I can throw down some roots.

Metal is in my blood. Metal is how I grew up. Listen, if Y'all are like me, and you stay true, you gonna be a M'Head the older you get...It's like fine wine.

Sometimes I think I know it all, but everyday I hear the new grace that carries on the tradition of the armies that got me rollin' staring with the jams from the greats back in 1972.

Let me start with the classics...

ACID BATH!! Need to hear more...How do you deal with the dark bands such as Obituary, or Kreator?

For the 70's...Black Sabbath---They had a hand in starting the style we call "metal" and they have classic heavy riffs that still sound great today.

For the 80's-Metallica--In the 80's nothing touched them in the metal world(IMO)..they had classical guitar intros with massive/heavy/griding guitars and pounding drums. Got me into the style to begin with

For the 90's-Pantera or Tool--Both bands were influencial to the scene for different reason but both could tear apart any venue they played. Loved both of them with a passion.

Never really got into bands like Napalm Death or Death...maybe I'm just too scared of the growl or something :)

Not one mention of Motley Crue? They fuckin rocked before they got all fat.

Ozzy when he could still function?

am I too old here?

What about the metal bands heard in strip clubs over the years. Do they qualify as metal to you?

Guns & Roses?
Nickelback ?
Rainbow / Dio?

I never liked Poison because they looked like a bunch of trannies.

And as much as I like Wanted Dead or Alive, Bon Jovi is pop, not metal, dammit. :D
