Been listening to metal since I was 14...I'm 36 now and still can't get enough. The anger and release of pure energy and rage is addicting to me, it calms me down. Which is pretty ironic if you met me, 'cuz I'm one of the most chill people you'd ever meet. And being a noodeler on my guitar, I'm just drawn to the raw sound of raging distortion and double kick drums...pure heaven. Also, my jeeps' pushing 1100 watts through my stereo and I still can't get enough.

\,,/ All metal, all the time\,,/

I was brought up on Uk metal some of the goldenera . Priest, Maiden,Sabbath i rember buyin Killers when i was abot 7 , they used 2 have loads of excellent metal at the library as a kid 7 to 11 years i must have borrowed all the metal they had all 33 s , i've always wondered what happened to all those great albums . Now u can Cd s n DVD but vinyl will always be the daddy 4 me , the whole package i luv Gatefolds!

On topic I'd have 2 say Judas Preist. Fukin Stanied Class!! My fav al;bum is probab;y Exiter by Preist it's so Raw a different sound 2 all there other stuff a clasic metal album.
Have 2 shout Maiden 4 two reasons classic metal consistently and They are West Ham Unoted Football Club fans. If u checxk em out Dickinson has worn the shirt a few times also they use guitars with the Clubs emblem n Badge (Fukin Class , i luv it) I will never 4 get putting that Killers album on 1st time 7 years old it tota;;y blew me away n opened up all sorts of music . Btw imo England represent hard considering the size we have had some amazing quality metal over the yeras

I'm sorry, I can't take all of the generic bands like Children of Bodom or Opeth. Also, I'm not sure why deathcore's being mentioned...

On topic:
I grew out of (brutal) death metal last year with bands like Malignancy, Insidious Decrepancy, Decrepit Birth, etc. etc. etc. I took a break, now I listen to the occasional sludge, black, progressive, you know. Latitudes, Skagos, Cynic (Cynic's always been a favorite).

if you think opeth is "generic," you don't know what generic is or you're just... strange.

I mean, i think there are a myriad of conceivable reasons why you wouldn't like opeth, but being "generic" isn't one of them.

I spent my adolescence listening to metal. Finally getting back into it, though not the ridiuculous stuff.

Black Sabbath, Danzig (up until 4), Megadeth, Melvins, Priest (ridiculous sometimes but sublime at others), Ministry (not strictly metal, but nearly there) and a few others.

To be honest though, I always find most 'metal' to be commercial in format but just played heavier. For people who really want 'heavy', check out Swans or something.

Oh, and Black Flag's post-'Damaged' albums paved the way for the likes of Pantera (whom I loathe) et al. Worth cecking out if you don't have a 'metal ghetto' mindset.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Tool.

Tool? Metal? I'd say maybe Progressive Rock or something, but definitely not metal. Not that they're not a great band or anything, I just wouldn't call them metal.

I like:

In Flames (Pre-Clayman)
Children of Bodom (Pre Are You Dead Yet?)
Dark Tranquillity
Amon Amarth
Eluveitie
Evergreen Terrace
Lamb of God

I guess I'd be classified as a "mainstream" or "generic" metal lover, but whatever. It could be worse, I could like Bullet for my Valentine or Avenged Sevenfold XD

just because something doesn't have elements of core, death, or something hard, doesn't mean that it isn't metal. I'd say Tool definitely crosses into metal territory. maybe art/avante garde metal... it could hoenstly be classified as both rock and metal in its respective subgenres.

Fair enough. I suppose it does have it's metal attributes, especially their old stuff.

Obviously SLAYER!!!...The band that got me into metal, 18 years ago now (still remember rocking south of heaven in the hockey dressing room at twelve, to the horror of the other parents).

Right now
..Acacia Strain
Through the eyes of the dead
Darkest Hour
Burzum
Agalloch
Beneath the Massacre
Himsa
There's so much 'metal' out there right now, I think we should make this thread the heavy music thread, To avoid the inevitable metalcore/metal/hardcore debate.
If it's heavy..it's metal... and therefore rules....

emperor is definately the bast in my opinion. especialy the older stuff like the split tape they did with enslaved

yes there are so many sub-genres and sub-genres of sub-genres for example death metal is a sub-genre of metal then melodic death metal is a sub-genre of death metal I think there are about 30 sub-genres total but I still want more stuff like dawn of ashes maybe minus the techno I would like a new sub-genre Brutal Death metal if its not already created I don't think it has been but songs like and then she bled... by suicide silence. music where you hear people being murdered in their songs tortured like that I might be called insane for loving that in my songs and in my music but I don't care I find it entertaining to listen to music where you hear people being killed in the songs like a movie I find it entertaining do any of you know what Im talking about or bands that do this not like lyrics but songs like and then she bled... by suicide silence or music like most of dawn of ashes songs.

I started listening to happy days which is depressive suicidal black metal DSBM Its not really what you think when you hear that I really like happy days and Im in a coffin its just my kind of music It helps me relax.

Epica
Fear Factory
Iron Maiden
Jesu
Marilyn Manson

Ministry
Nightwish

...with Mastodon being the current favorite.
