Favorite metal bands of all time and why

Metallica - Kill'Em All

Because I don't really like metal but this album is pure gold.

GODFLESH is my favorite metal band of all time. Jesu is just as good, but they're more like "post metal". Godflesh had no boundaries, they incorporated hip hop, dub, techno, choral music, and ambient into their bleak industrial metal. "Streetcleaner" is still the heaviest album ever, and "Love and Hate in Dub" has some of the baddest breakbeats, better than most of Ed Rush's whole career.

Plus Justin Broadrick is probably the chillest guy to ever work in music. And he founded Napalm Death.

Does anyone like slayer? I've never been too much into metal but recently started listening to some bands like slayer, pantera and metallica.

The first slayer album I listened to was reign in blood like a month ago, but I'm listening to season's in the abyss now and I like it better than reign in blood.

Behemoth
Opeth
The Black Dahlia Murder
Pig Destroyer
Napalm Death
Kreator (if they are considered metal?)

deathcore is where its at. if you dont know what it is, look up veil of maya or her demise my rise

damn, my favorite of each subgenre has to be technical death metal. necrophagist started as a one man band and that dude was crazy talented, now he has a full line up. beneath the massacre is another really talented group of guys.
deathcore is a close second. i like for today, their extremely technical too haha. but im also a fan of beneath the massacre but they're only kind of deathcoreish.

Opeth reminds me of the people here in Louisiana i'm not surprised they are from here i don't care for them at all I have lived in Louisiana most of my life goatwhore is from new Orleans i do believe they are alright.

Behemoth
Kreator (if they are considered metal?)

Why wouldn't they be? Unless they've changed a lot since I've heard 'em, they were pretty standard thrash, and one of my favorites.

I haven't listened to much new music (of any genre) for quite a while, especially metal. I have heard a few bands in passing that sound good, but I'm not familiar with any, besides Children of Bodom (a friend played it for me). I was most into metal during the late '80s (early Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica, Slayer, Kreator and crossover bands like MOD and DRI), so if anyone can recommend new bands that sound like that, I'd like to check 'em out.

I wish my metal tastes weren't so generic, but my top three albums are probably Master of Puppets, Peace Sells and South of Heaven.

for today is stupendous!

I enjoy the unholy trinity of black, death, and doom metal (and many of their subsequent sub-genres) and have been rooted in such for many years now.

My favorites und why:

diSEMBOWELMENT: Death/Doom Metal from Australia. Transcendence Into The Peripheral is a masterpiece, hands down. Their ability to perfectly mesh together slow, crushing doom, furious blasting death metal and surreal, peaceful ambient passages is well-executed in such a way that nothing seems out of place or forced, it all just flows together. Huge inspiration to me, unfortunately they broke up after their one and only full-length, but to this day they are considered the Godfathers of Death/Doom.

Deathspell Omega: Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice. Fas -Ite, Maledicti, In Ignum Aeternum. Paracletus. I need say no more. Best trilogy ever, in anything. Boundaries were not meant for them, and they prove this with their latest installment Paracletus.. very technical, experimental, dissonant yet perfectly executed chaos whose malevolence is sincere. Nothing is more "black metal" than they are at the moment. France's one redeeming quality.

Blut Aus Nord: France's other redeeming quality. Metaphysical Black/Extreme Metal as they so deem themselves. Memoria Vetusta II - Dialogue With The Stars is an unbelievable piece of work and a good accompaniment to psychedelic journies.

Inquisition: They prove that 2 people can create some heavy shit. Their riffing style is fucking awesome for lack of a better term, very ritualistic and dissonant black metal. Columbia wins.

Corrupted: Japanese Sludge/Doom Metal. With lyrics in Spanish. Released dozens of splits with grind bands with ultra-sludgey tunes, but their full-lengths usually consist of hour-long opuses that, in the vein of diSEMBOWELMENT, blend tranquility and monolithic doom. El Mundo Frio is majestic.

Then there's Drudkh, Gorguts, Mgla, Weakling, Lurker of Chalice, Grand Belial's Key, Satanic Warmaster, Immolation, Ea, Xasthur, Leviathan, Abyssmal Sorrow, Summoning, Burzum, Benighted in Sodom, Krohm, Judas Iscariot, Spawn of Possession, Ulcerate, Peste Noire, Arghoslent and hundreds of others. Those up there are just my top 5.

Metal is awesome my friend, what else can I say? :)

Regarding your OP, I used to be a gigantic Children of Bodom junkie from like 7th grade - 10th grade, Follow The Reaper is a really solid album! And Kalmah kick quite a fair amount of ass too.. my favorite song is definitely Alteration and Sword Chant, great shit when you're blazed.

You would probably dig Agalloch and Falkenbach in this case.

Growing up I would buy and listen to so many diff metal bands, but now in my mid thirties the 2 I still consistently listen to are Slayer and Iron Maiden.

Slayer because they have never let up on their ferocity (except maybe for South of Heaven - still 1 of my favorites though) and never changed to appeal to a wider audience. Also the blistering guitar solos that King and Hanneman trade off are amazing.

As for Maiden, I love the songwriting of Harris, the still amazing voice of Dickinson and the amazing guitar work of Harris. Up the Irons.
