EADD Theology Megathread - Book II - Exodus

I come from a country that is predominantly muslim and people are not fanatical lunatics. I reckon you guys have a skewed perception from media etc.

Think about the shit that happens in christianity's name in Uganda or whatever. it's not exactly representative of the religion as it's practiced by the majority but just some twisted backward version of it that hasn't caught up with human rights...

I reckon all the abrahamic religions are just as bullshit as each other. Wouldn't say one is worse though. They just go through phases of being used by different dickheads in dickheadish ways.

+ what Sammy said.

At the moment the Muslim faith is being used by more dickheads to do more dickheadish things than other religions.

Of course, it's not the actual religion itself (well, no more so than others) that causes this, but people do use the religion to cause things. See the insane uproar because someone drew a picture of the prophet - I know that was insanely twisted by people in the countries that were kicking off to make it seem 1000x worse than it really was so the people weren't simply kicking off at that cartoon but... they wouldn't have been kicking off at all were it not for the religion. Someone drew a picture of Mohammed? So? Who's Mohammed?

The thing about the Koran is that it has a lot of similar things to the OT.. they just have no *Update* like Jesus to fuck that all off so a lot of fucked up shitty laws still apply.. such as the punishments for fornication, adultery etc (100 lashes and 1 years exile or stoning to death, depending on your interpretation) and silly things like apostasy..

Most religions evolved along side society.. Islam is having trouble in doing so..

I agree to a point, the quran does reflect its desert origins and time; and because of its recited and 'divine' nature, there's not much give in it in the main suras (on the upside at least it's not all mistranslated like the bible (satanic verses notwithstanding)). But there are updates of a sort - the commentaries (hadith and sunnah is it). Though often the hadith version is actually worse than what's in the quran (like wearing veils and lots of sharia law which isn't in the quran itself). Much of the criticism i hear is actually about commentaries or sharia law rather than the actual quran (though not all). Anyway it's down to imams to interpret it further - differing traditions having different flexibility in this regard.

However, in some ways, the quran is an update on the gospels (it was 600 years later and he was knowledgable of christianity) - eg the social dimension which jesus hinted at with the moneylenders outside the temple is explicitly included in the quran (give a chunk of your income to the poor; no usury). In other ways maybe not - but the skims i've had of the quran it seemed the peace and love stuff was much more prominent than the embarrasingly primitive stuff (maybe i need to tune my confirmation bias to the other channel, but then probably that goes for the critics too ;).

I agree religions evolve alongside and reflect the society they're part of. In the 'dark ages' islamic society was light years ahead of europe, and the flowering of science and philosophy that islam allowed laid the foundations of our rennaisance. As europe evolved ahead of islamic society due to industrialisation, i agree the respective religions reflected that. If we were arguing in a salon in baghdad in the 10th century, the argument would be in reverse (those backward christians and their lack of science). Anyway, i'm sort of marxist about religion - i say change the social relations first and the religion will catch up - in the current 'islamic' world that's as much in our control as any actual muslims (just think if we didn't always support nutters and wahabists and dictators, what might islam have evolved into over the last 100 years).

Its being used as an excuse by dickheads to do dickheadish things but I don't think it's inherently more dickheadish than the others. Is what I meant. So I think we agree? Women don't have to wear veils in lebanon, you're allowed to drink booze without getting murdered, women don't get stoned etc i've seen more extremists fanatics on the news in the UK than the tons of normal muslim people I know over in beirut. It's part of their culture there without it being extreme to any extent. Sort of like christianity here.

Yeah the mohammed uproar is obviously retarded, but as far lunacy goes - please refer to my earlier post in the thread re: mohel video. That's seriously disturbed.

I totally believe in God. When I was doing my Race4Life, I was at 3k n I thought I could run no more. I'd not really trained and I had forgotten to take my suboxone, which was given my withdrawals psychologically. I prayed n begged God, "please help me run this to the end, please." I also thought of someone else on this site. Nonetheless, God help run it to the end. Please don't ask for evidence, it's faith. Faith does not require evidence. God is there but you have to be open minded to Him. Although he does not always answer our prayers if He feels that it is not the right way for us.

You can say what you like about chebus but lugging that cross around did give him some amazing abbs.

One of my favourite Quran passages:

NSFW:

YUSUFALI: But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"
PICKTHAL: Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy?
SHAKIR: But she pointed to him. They said: How should we speak to one who was a child in the cradle?

019.030
YUSUFALI: He said: "I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet;
PICKTHAL: He spake: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He hath given me the Scripture and hath appointed me a Prophet,
SHAKIR: He said: Surely I am a servant of Allah; He has given me the Book and made me a prophet;

019.031
YUSUFALI: "And He hath made me blessed wheresoever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;
PICKTHAL: And hath made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and hath enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I remain alive,
SHAKIR: And He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and He has enjoined on me prayer and poor-rate so long as I live;

019.032
YUSUFALI: "(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;
PICKTHAL: And (hath made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and hath not made me arrogant, unblest.
SHAKIR: And dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me insolent, unblessed;

019.033
YUSUFALI: "So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)"!
PICKTHAL: Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!
SHAKIR: And peace on me on the day I was born, and on the day I die, and on the day I am raised to life.

And aye agreed Vurtual.

“The man who prays is the one who thinks that god has arranged matters all wrong, but who also thinks that he can instruct god how to put them right.”

Christopher Hitchens.

Shit raas has been temp banned what did he do?

Problem with this thread is that I can spend hours replying in detail to all the questions raised, yet no-one listens... coz they've already decided the religion is a load of BS and just aren't interested in assimilating any Christian responses. Still i'll answer some previous questions, but I'm way too busy to apply myself here for the moment.

Other news:

haha I was just reading about what Christians say about the Old testament on a Christian forum:

We have to recognise that since we are not Jewish we don't have to abide by the old Hebraic Laws. These are the laws that the Pharisee's used to control the people badly and in an evil manner. But should we take notice of them, IMO, yes we should take notice of them but not allow them to dominate our lives. Most are also in our criminal law and we should abide by the law by which we are under

We must obey the law!

urgh, Christianity collects too many goodie-2-shoe types. It gives the religion a bad name. Remember Jesus rebelled against the government... and this is what it's all about: Compassionate, righteousness and truth... and when something interferes with this, be it the government a corperation, your parents or friends.... you rebel against them.

Christians have been fed to lions, tortured and killed because they have defied those who challenge their faith. It's important to remember what sacrifices have been made in the past, to keep the religion and it's spirit alive and so prominent today.

PICKTHAL: He spake: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He hath given me the Scripture and hath appointed me a Prophet,

I read that as Lol! I am the slave of Allah
