'the lord works in mysterious ways' would probably be ya answer and shit, if god was/wasnt a cruel bastard how would the world be when we finally unite and end this bullshit of empires/countries/whatever if we did it on our own, and made every person equal as they should be, instead of there being a raincloud everytime there's a drought and food magically appearing everytime anybodys hungry

Who invented the inventor? Either all inventions need inventing (and an inventor), which implies the existance of God (the watchmaker etc), or else things can come about without an inventor. The problem is who invented God? If all things need a prime cause then what caused the prime cause? Alternatively if god can cause itself then that demonstrates that things can cause themselves in which case there is no logical need for god.

I think the theory of evolution has its strengths.. And there are Christian evolutionists.

I think people who say things like this don't understand the meaning of the word theory or that there is about as much evidence for and understanding of the theory of evolution as there is for the theory of gravity.

Natural selection at work. Birds that fly in the most energy efficient way are most likely to go the distance and survive and reproduce, passing on their genes to their offspring. Flying in a V formation means that all the birds except the lead bird in the formation are slipstreaming each other and find flying slightly less tiring as a result. They take turns leading.

If rather than giving up and assigning the mysterious to god you do a little research on, for example, 'Magnetoception', you'll discover that something is also known about how they know which way to go despite 'no one telling them the way' (although personally i'd be more impressed if they DID stop for directions...)

Time is quite a stretchy 'entity' ATM. Indeed, it says in the bible that 'each day is as a 1000 years to God).

Also re God existing on a different level.. God is described by the bible and church as being both transcendent and immanent.. with us and separate..

First off I never made any reference to god being "poo" it's not my style at all, I'm not looking to insult you beliefs but I am questioning them and you have the right to answer or not.

No I'm afraid that I don't accept there is a creator God in the sense you are talking about, I stand in wonder at the universe and some of its mysteries but I don't in anyway see an entity of any kind being behind it pulling any strings.

The actual bible doesn't really exist though does it ? the idea that anything this entity does could be measured in days may have worked for people 100's of years ago but a day a merely the time it takes our little planet to revolve. Something may have been lost in translation bearing in mind you are not quoting in the source language. The various Bibles are a selection of various scriptures from various sources none of them written in English. In that sense I feel the Quran has at least retained its integrity in this respect.

But you have failed to answer my question, I do not believe in creationism, in that I do not believe that an entity designed the human race and we just came into existence without the process of evolution, going down that route makes the world about 10,000 years old and leads to all kinds of other gaping holes in the theory.

What is your view on the subject?

YPDH I have no problem with you seeing absolutely everything as an interconnected One. The problem for me is the personification of that One as God and the consequences of that. On a micro level that involves an individual giving away responsibility to a fairy story. On a wider level it means the corruption of minds and mass murder in the name of war.

Also kind of means the ruling out of a lot of basic science. I just don't know how people let themselves be used and abused like that.

And I've yet to find someone who found God while at their Zenith. Bit suspect that.

There's also a lot of terrible advice in the bible. Which kind of means that when a good person selectively reads the bible they come away with a bunch of good ideas and when a mass murdering psychopath reads the bible they can come away with justification for the slaughter of innocents. Bit of a mixed bag really considering it's supposed to be the infallable word of a loving god.
 
I have a collection of medical text books, some of which are over 50 years old. Most of their treatment is terribly outdated and down right kooky. I'd hate to imagine how they will hold up 500 yr from now, especially after they are translated into several languages

Off the top of my head because im not awake enough to research or google.. the word ' Catholic' means incorperating or wholeness.. It could be argued ( i think ) that the early church embraced the pagan one.. much like a man would a woman...

In the same line of thinking paganism is a very feminine 'religion'.. I reckon christianity ' completes it ' lol...I'm sure it wasnt his (eg church) intention to be domineering but there wasnt a chance that she was getting the upper hand in their marriage. :)

Its atm (sorry to be a bit picky on this one but I did ask at the beginning of the thread ever so nicely) I'm not a cash machine and neither am I At The Moment 23 (41 actually), having re-read it I can see that you were talking to Mr PTCH but your formatting was inconsistent in that other individuals had had the pleasure of being made bold. Apologies my error I just took offense as I thought you had suggested I'd said that and, like I said its not my style, although in a liter sense I see the analogy.

Your still side stepping my simple creationism question, answering all sorts of other queries posting pretty pictures, its really a simple yes or no, I have Christian friends on both sides of the fence.

Have you ever read any of Richard Dawkins' work ? if not i would fully recommend it to any Christian, not because I think he will stop you from being Christian but because he puts forward all the information for all sides with such eloquence "The God Delusion" is a very interesting piece and in my view a must read for anyone claiming to be a Christian or a follower of any organised religion.

Ive read the Dawkins Delusion :D Will get around to DDs books at some point atm* but there are librarys full of books that I consider both more interesting and informative than dds dry old bog roll.

If it helps her feel better about life, then cool. Whatever you need to get you through the day. Inviting questions about your faith is asking for trouble though.

What it boils down to is that if you're capable of high levels of double-thought (i.e. an omnipotent, all knowing God that loves us, yet inflicts unimaginable suffering billions of innocents) Biblical God is a nice bloke who has a personal interest in your happiness and well being.

If you brain does not allow you to hold self contradicting notions then it follows that God in the biblical sense either does not exist, or is an appalling cunt.

On a side note, religious folk always question the veracity of the "Theory" of evolution (despite the fact that it is entirely consistent with all the observable data) yet never question the veracity of a re-hashed translation of a collection of ancient middle eastern scrolls that have shown themselves to be inconsistent with all observable data (genesis, age of the universe, virgin pregnancies, walking on water, global floods sufficiently deep to drown everything, etc)

The God in you might not. But the God in plenty of others is getting stuck right in with the brutal rape and torture of his flock.

If you believe in an omnipotent, omniscient God, then he's one seriously nasty bastard.

Just one example from millions to mull:
He see's a child lying in the dirt, clothed in rags. It's frail skeletal form ravaged by months of starvation. Family all dead, no one in the world to help them. It should tug the heartstrings. He should help. After all, he can help, more than anyone or anything in the universe he can help. So God sends this poor child a gift from above; a nice cloud of flies to buzz at every crevice while he dies and a vulture to pick at his eyeballs. And to crown it all, once the kid breaths his last it's off the the fiery pit for all eternity.

Some bloke this God.
