Dreadlocks

if u wear dreads YOU are labelling YOUrself, cant u c that?
that's why i dont like dreads, i dont like labels.

No more then any other hairstyle or fashion trend.

Perhaps you should just consider that people are individuals, and we are not neccessarily intended to all look the same.

Look, to each his own - I just think that it is people like you that perpetuate these stereotypes. By saying that people with dreads are "attentionwhores" you are totally judging them on ONE thing. I mean, you don't judge people by the colour of the hair or skin, do you? It's one thing to say you don't like it, esthetically, but to make a statement about a person's personality based on their hairstyle is seriously judging a book by its cover.

exactly!! we finally agree, that s what i wanted to say all the time, perming ur hair, dreadlocks, coloring ur hair purple. that all the same!!! i just hate it when does dreadlockers begin to nag about nature , nag about a natural way of life , nag about world peace and so on!! that has nothin to do with dreads!!!! that s all, no offence to no one. it's not that i couldnt be friends with someone who has dreads....

peace

i dont judge ppl on their hairstyle!!! i couldnt care less!! i dont disrepect someone becuz he has dreads, i disrepsect someone becuz he has stupid thoughts. i agree with u!! i made a mistake to say that everyone who has dreads is an attentionwhore!! that s not true, offcourse NOT!! , if u think dreads are beautifull, i can understand that!! sometimes it is beautifull!!! i agree :) i mean it!!
but i just HATE :X it when certain stereotypical dreaders begin to nag!!! and i have met ppl like that in my life....they begin to nag about nature and their way of life!! cant they keep that stuff for their selves!! is wearing dreadlocks a religion?? NO , it's not!!

Actually, its a very important part of several religions...

rastas spit on their hands and shake... then run them through their hair, it's supposed to be the spit of Jah--

The senegalese also wear locks... and it's a much, much older tradition than with the rastas.

Several other tribes in Africa lock their hair, as well...

I think it's funny that you generalize and were somehow granted a divine omniscience to know who is a "stereotypical dreader" and who isn't... what their real reasons are and if they're valid or not... FYI, I contemplated allowing my hair to lock for TWO YEARS before I did it, because it's a lifestyle choice... not a hairstyle of the week. IMHO, it's pretty arrogant to "disrespect someone becuz he has stupid thoughts"-- I'm not going to disrespect you because you can't spell out whole, simple words such as you, because, or people--

People think differently, have different beliefs, and make decisions based on their own value systems-- Just because they may be different from yours does NOT mean that they are stupid.

I am not someone who believes in paying $500+ to have their hair locked (or any amount of money for that matter) because I do not believe locks should be for vanity... but that is MY PERSONAL OPINION--

The way you type (lack of grammar/spelling/proper punctuation) and bring about your points, judging others, calling them stereotypical and other derogatory terms (attentionwhores)... comes off as ignorant. I'm not saying you're ignorant... but it is quite difficult to bring an intelligent debate in that manner.

i just had very bad experiences with dreaders...that's all. I DONT wanna get back on them, i could do that ezly, but i wont.

bout my spelling problem! ---> i m just very very very lazy, as long as u understand me it's all good with me.

and bout the disrespectin becuz they have stupid thoughts...yes that's abit arrogant of me, but i didnt really meant it that way. i think u know what i meant and if not well just think of me as an arrogant jerk. %)

what is natural about dreads?? i dont understand , i m afraid, dreads dont grow in nature, it's somethin the human mind has created/invented. i think dreads is ideal for attentionwhores/stereotypes.

If you leave your hair without combing or brushing it, sooner or later you get dreads. Unless you have really really fine hair. So it is perfectly natural, its the hairstyle everyone had before combs were invented.

And dreads aren't bad for the hair, it's all about how you treat them. I know a girl who wanted to put surfing wax in her dreads 8( . But if you treat the dreads good then I don't see how it would be damaging for the hair. I mean compared to having undreaded hair that gets blowdried and bleached and dyed and and loaded with differents chemicals and products, I think natural would be better. I know my hair is happier now, coz I did use to mistreat it when I didn't have dreads.

Anyway, I chose to get dreads partly out of vanity ;) hehe, and partly coz I have half-african hair thats a bitch to brush unless I use half a bottle of conditioner or if I straighten it (again, very bad for the hair!)... It's just more simple this way. No brush, no pain. Plus it looks a lot better this way =D

I had braide extensins put in my hair 2 mths ago an half the roots are starting to dread up. I was actualy planning on cutting them all off and shaving my head when the roots got too noticeable (maybe at the 6mth period) because the braides start to get quite heavy because they are attached to fine bits of hair (and my hair is quite fine anyway) but i saw a girl last weekend with braides with about 20cms of roots and she had perfectly shaped dreads underneath and they just looked awesome and she just had all her hair piled up in a head scarf on the top of her head (i imagine because they were extremely long at that stage) so i'm just going to do that now. Wait for them to grow really really long and then cut off the braides when i have the dreads underneath long enough to wear by themselves. Yay i'm making dread again and they will be naturally formed ones (sortove hehe) and i'm going to keep them my natural light brown colour so no dyes (which for anyone who knows me is a big deal!) 8o see how long that last though aye? ;) hehe

maybe back in the dinosaur era, as far as I can tell, it was only ever a natural occurence in specific regions of the world and for certain religious beliefs.

There's nothing wrong with embracing your primitive and tribal side though :) We don't have to say and do and be what society says we are supposed to (which are a big part of having dreads)

I still don't follow on the "tribal" or "primitive" side of things though - that's all I don't understand - I didn't think anyone was "tribal" in Australia unless they were aboriginal?

I take it "tribal" meaning "belongs to a tribe"

You don't have to follow..

There are large theories flowing around the NYC underground about the *tribal movement* of subculture... the tribes of mach, virus, psy, etc etc.... how these different tribes interact and evolve, with eachother and within society--

You know, I was working at a large pharmaceutical company in the clinical trials operatons dept. for the last half of this summer-- and *most* of the employees were black, some jamiaican, some islamic-- all from the east orange/newark area of jersey... Quite a few of them spoke to me about my hair, asked me why, how, etc. and *ALL* of them at the end of the conversation told me how wonderful they thought it was that I would let my hair lock, how it was beautiful that I live the way that I do...

GET OUT OF THE BOX, DAMNIT... some people are just so STUCK!

What, you think everybody had neat, untangled hair before they had invented combs???

Before brushes and combs were invented.. back in the stone age, whatever... obviously peoples hair formed into dreads because thats what happens when you dont comb your hair! So all I was saying is that dreads are perfectly natural, because thats what most of us would have today if we didnt do anything to interfere with our hair, ie just left it alone without brushing it.

The only way to grow dreads is to wash with dial soap and never ever comb your hair. A hat for sleeping is nice too. Natty...

But we do all belong to a tribe :)

It's about getting down to earth (literally) It's about the "ROAR" that you hold within and letting it out. I don't know if i can explain what i mean for you to understand though.

Tali - yep you have told me that before. I thought that was cool that just formed like that =D and this way i get to keep my braides for ages and ages too =D
