Dreadlocks

I think they're cool as long as they aren't full of little animals. I have them, took me two days to get them done at a salon, had my hair backcombed. I've had them for 2 years now. I prefer them thin on myself- just because I have dreads doesn't mean I don't want relatively neat-looking hair, although I can appreciate the "bird's nest" dreadlocked look on some people. Myself though, I'm anal about keeping them the way I like them. I used to spend hours every week just twisting them and putting gel in them. I've relaxed a bit on the maintenance now, plus they're old enough to look after themselves a bit more. But dreadlocks can be really hard work though!

Wouldn`t want to offend Jah now would we?;)

Please know at least something about the religious importance of dreadlocks for many cultures around the world, particuarly the Rastafarians, before you imitate something which has been stripped of it`s significance by deluded, hedonistic, western hippie culture.

anyway, enjoy
:)

I have a dreadlock. It was an accident tho. I just didnt comb my hair for a long time, but i did wash it, so i suppose thats what stopped my whole head from becoming dreaded. I dont know if i like them or dislike them?

I definitely would like to have dreadlocks at some point in my life, but what has always deterred me in the past is that it would take me forever to develop them naturally because I have straight hair. Then again, I could use that time to develop a strong yoga practice so I could at least have a pretension of a spiritual underpinning to my hairstyle.

umm....use the search tool... i actually just looked this topic up and there is a big thread for it (same title) :\

i've had my dreads for a little over 4 months now

rastafaripuba praise Jah..

My firend used to have a dog with dreads back in teh day coolest fucking dog he'd go on tour with us. I remember this girl who had a dog part red wold part german shepard, crazy stuff happens in those forests up in Vt. That was SugarBush 95 4th of july weekend, great shows. set-up sucked on a ski slope on like a 40 degree angle band at the bottom, so many ppl falling down. a hoard of hippies decided to run the the woods and sneak in for free trey got all pissed and started bitching this isnt a free show at least come down to the stage and donte a dollar. Great tour, great way to end the tour those shows, great fuck that night too. If I remeber correctly and i think I do they played a killer harpua 'Jimmy was stroking his cat in his lazy boy smoking a bong ....." One of the best harpuas I have seen.

That was a great tour 95 although to spacey jammy for my taste. Year before that was the dead tour, Highgate vt. little border town practically in Canada, basically turned into a free show everybody stromed the gates. God I miss the dead. Next year was Euro 95 tour. rockin and a rollin. met the band so many times on that tour. Fav. was Hamburg I think that was the year they recorded some songs for slip stich and pass there. Best show on that tour was Sesto Calande Italy. Concert got cancelled in Milan so the rented out a roller rink an hour or so out of milan. Open back stage, small crowd. the place was like half the size of the Argon ball roon just the bottom floor. TINY. and they had these big huge doors basically a wall that opened up on one side to a beach right on a lake.

Naked chicks everywhere, old italian collosium type ruins the band were hanging out with the fans for a few hours before the show, as the town was just in awe as to what was going on. The were playing acoustic guitars and bongos covering dead shows out in the evening sunset. Man it was great. I talked to Mike about ufo's for over a half hour that day. Great guy, down to earth just like me ;). I said you gottta play scent of a mule now that we got the ufo vibe going on sure enough. 2nd set opener [or maybe that was the 1rst set, who cares] Punch you in the eye fuckin nutz. Not to mention the shows previous were in amsterdam so everybody was well stocked with primo smoke. Everybody camped out on the beach after the show right there the band stayed out and partied till the weehours eating whats the ice cream over there gelatas or some shit. God id love one of those now.

WHere was I going with this oh yea dread locked pubic regions on part wolfs praise Jah 8)

ive had dreads for about 5 years. its been long enough that im really not sure about my enitial reasoning behind growing them, but im pretty certain my reasoning for still having them is completely different.

I really Aint tryna be racist when I say it, becuz like some ppl has said before, the people up in viking land had locks long long time ago, but I feel like they dont suit white ppl. That is just my honest personal opinion. Honestly I dont like em much on dudes of any race, but that is jus due to me not liking long hair on guys. The funy thing is , I can dig a long fro (No whiteboyz plz) , but that same lenth of hair dreaded up to me aint attractive for some reason, but anyways, On women Ifeel like locs are more attractive, if they are well maintained and slim, the thick ones are ugly to me, I dont like that look of hair coils that looks like long nappy hot dogs sproutin outtta someones head.

All this from a point of view of it as a hair style. As a religious ritual, of course I dontn judge them in any way. But remember the dangers of a person who aint committed to the right things tryin to lock up their hair as a frivolous thing that they dont know the meaning behind.

And, there aint no hairstyle in the world uglier than a white girl or guy with a big ol knotty nanky-ass pile of tangled bird nest napped to the back of their head. Like I said, i dont feel like i am tryin to say that some people should or shouldnt be allowed to rock locks but , I just dont feel like they look attractive or even that i can take the person serious , when they are on a white person espexially if it is a hippie, and that seems to be the only sub culture of white person i ever see them on so maybe i am biased or somethin. I just got to be straight up here I cant lie about how I feel and how ppl like this get percieved in the hood especialy...

I tried harrd as hell when i have met hippies to be kind and not judge them just cuz they aint hood and dont listen to rap and all that, and all i have EVER got back, was rude, judgemental remarks, ppl being condescending and unaccepting of people unlike them. I dont care who you are, If you are a good person with a good soul then even if i dont relate to you so much I will be on the level with you . And I Always go in with a open mind but i just keep catchin static from em.

I am sorry if I make a judgement now, And I will always try to keep my mind open. But i see them act one way with their friends and people they know, warm, friendly, loving and caring, and as soon as I step in a room and introduce my self , tryin as hard as I can to have open connumitcation and all that, its jsut like a wall goes up. Ppl start sayin "I sho nuff is drinkin this beer and it be good" and shit like that. When all I ever did was be nice to them and try to be friendly. This is my experience for about the past 6 years of hangin out with people who know hippie type folks and always invite me. Time after time I will go and say ,Maybe this time they wont be bad, maybe last time those gueys was just douchebags and this will be cool. But always it turns out the same. For people that claim to be so open and free they shut down around me and treat me like i am stupid. So, No I guess i dont like hippies, But that aint got nothing to do with dreadlocks. I just hate locks on hippies even more thats all.

^^ I think it takes a little bit more effort than that to acquire dreadlocks. But yes, not washing might help things along :D

BUT, lots of people with dreadlocks do actually wash them so keep that in mind.

I used to have dreads back in high school. Back combed, with lots of swimming in the ocean to help them mature, petrolatum to make em not so frizzy. I washed my hair every other day with that dye free, fragrance free shampoo that leaves nothing behind in your hair. (the stuff people with psoriasis and dermatitis use)

I might post a pic of me with my dreads later, just for lulz.
