Does speed even get you high?

Iirc, doves were around late 80s/early 90s. Then the quality of pills took a downward turn for a few years until the mitzi's arrived around 97/98. Mixmag hailed them as the saviour of dance music..

Sorry to hear you're having a bad time mate, but I'm sure you'll bounce back before too long :) take care..

Actually now I've thought about the dates this would have been roughly summer of 98 (I think) so it would probably have been a mitsubishi.....

The speed spiking incident was around 92ish.....

I worked the doors 92 to 99 so the entire 90s were I bit of a blur TBH.... In a good way though :)

Thanks for the kind words mate....by this time next week I should have a better idea of what's happening so fingers crossed...

The first Doves I came across where about 92-93, after that the press became so prolific it meant nothing. I was pretty much only attending one sound systems parties for all of the 90s and quality pills were pretty consistent for me until the later 90s but around that time I started to be able to get really good MDMA crystal, this stuff was a fairly fine clear crystal, it looked like glitter.

There was a crowd of people going to those parties that had been doing so for years and I didnt but from any randoms...unless it was 5am and I felt the need. We did attend a few clubs on weeks where there was no proper party, Labyrnth in Dalston and Milwakees near Bedford and later The Fridge in Brixton, I used to do OK if I had to purchase whilst out but inevitably got turned over a few times.

@englandz - keep on keepin on mate and seek some proper help if things are getting on top, I once left things far to long and by the time I sought help I was broken, you can only keep putting a brave face on it all so long..much love

This is 100% spot on. About the first 100 pills I took were Doves, then came the rhubarb & custards and the cally sunshines etc. First shit drought was 97-98 then the Mitzis came around after that drought.

Just a suggestion, but as this thread has generated 8 pages of interesting discussion, why not make it into a speed thread? Apologies if there's already a speed threed but just thought this discussion is interesting for others to look through. Especially the harm reduction POV in not taking 2g worth etc. that would be valusble for people trying this n come across purer stuff, not to take too much of it.

Evey

Not sure if there is a speed thread or not...certainly if someone was used to taking 2g at a time and the somehow came across some 90+% pure speed then they would end up very dead. Your heart just wouldn't be able to stand it and would go into VT and possibly VF without a doubt. If you got help then they could try IV diazepam and cooling for the hyperthermia that would have occurred and maybe drugs to slow your heart down but evenso I imagine the damage would be pretty severe if not fatal even with medical intervention.

Very dangerous for sure.

^^ You've kinda defeated your own suggestion for change, the thread is meandering around the whole subject of stims as things tend to do about the place, we've even established that the word 'speed' has no fixed meaning.

Anyway is Ismene's thread and I know better than to mess with such things ;)

Maybe MOPs will drop in and give us the full run down on meth psychosis...hope that man is OK

Most definitely.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/132114

A 45-year-old woman with congestive heart failure, in whom there was no evidence of coronary heart disease, valve disease, or other demonstrable cause of heart failure, was found to have taken high doses of dextroamphetamine over a long period. Withdrawal of amphetamine resulted in deterioration, suggesting a physical cardiac dependence on the drug. The clinical and autopsy findings are presented and the similarities to the myocarditis associated with pheochromocytoma are discussed. The evidence presented suggests a causal relationship between administration of dextroamphetamine and the cardiomyopathy.

It really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that amphetamines or indeed stimulants in general can lead to a host of hearth conditions, there is no such thing as a free lunch

Hi, that just brings up loads of misc results.
Are you saying that speed can cause conjestive cardiac failure?

The point I was getting at (without going into too much detail.and making a massive long post) was that oedema is a symptom of CHF which can be brought on by stimulant use.

It's a fairly in depth topic and to fully understand requires a basic grasp of cardiac anatomy and physiology but if you look up congestive heart failure in Wikipedia it probably gives you a basic outline (I think anyway...ive never actually tried)

And other fireplace related problems :)

Did I mention possible issues with coordination and cognition, in fairness given this latest extended run it's surprising I can converse at all.

In all seriousness though ( well I'll give it a shot ) all drugs / medications / chemicals carry some risks, I'm often surprised about other peoples surprise that that is the case. The idea that your fine as long as you don't over do it may have some validity in reducing risk but so many other factors and variables are at play that whilst moderation is clearly the best approach it certainly doesn't provide any guarantees.

....if all that was incoherent bollox you'll just have to learn to live with it :D

Nah...I know what you mean...it's a good point actually..

^^

How big a risk is the more pertinent question. I think the chance of dying from speed is about the same chance as being hit by a meteorite on your way home from a major lottery win.

Concentrating on the one death out of several billion uses is pretty misleading. If we're going to worry about that then how would you ever cross the road?

Death from stimulant overdose is fairly rare but not THAT rare....

A very brief Google search for figures brought this is (Medscape)..

Visits to US emergency departments related to amphetamine use increased 250% from 4,900 encounters in 1991 to 17,400 visits in 1994.[3] During this same interval, medical examiner-reported deaths in the United States related to methamphetamine rose from 151 to 433.

I'm sure a more detailed search would bring up more up to date numbers. Just speculating though, the massive rise in meth use in the states since these figures were published would I imagine correspond to a fairly hefty increase in the fatality figures...

Amphetamine and other stimulant deaths are nowhere near as prevalent as opiate related fatalities but for someone with a pre-existing cardiac complaint who goes a bit too heavy on the old marching powder then it's a real risk.

I know this isn't the lyrics thread, but the words of the immortal Canned Heat are quite relevant here:

I wanna tell you all a story
About this chick I know
They call her "Amphetamine Annie"
She's always shovelling snow
I sat her down and told her
I told her crystal clear
"I don't mind you getting high
But there's one thing you should fear"
"Your mind might think its flying, baby
On those little pills
But you ought to know it's dying, 'cause
Speed kills"
But Annie kept on speeding
Her health was getting poor
She saw things in the window
She heard things at the door
Her mind was like a grinding mill
Her lips were cracked and sore
Her skin was turning yellow
I just couldn't take it no more
She thought her mind was flying
On those little pills
She didn't it was going down fast, 'cause
Speed kills
Well I sat her down and told her
I told her one more time
"The whole wide human race has taken
Far too much methedrine"
She said "I don't care what a Limey says,
I've got to get it on
I'm not here to just see no man
Who come from across the pond
She wouldn't heed my warning
Lord, she wouldn't hear what I said
Now she's in the graveyard, and she's
Awfully dead

Is a death related to meth the same thing as being caused by meth in a single dose tho? Or is it that you're addicted to meth for years, not eating, not exercising, never washing, taking every other drug you can find before keeling over in a state of complete disrepair?

Sunrise, wrong side of another day
Sky high six thousand miles away
Don't know how long I've been awake
Wound up in an amazin' state

I can't get enough
You know it's righteous stuff
Goes up like prices at Christmas, this

Motorhead, you can call me
Motorhead, all right

Brained out, total amnesia
Get some mental anesthesia
Don't move, I'll shut the door, kill the lights
If I can't be wrong I must be right

All good clean fun
Have another stick of gum
Man, you look better already, aah

Motorhead, remember me now
Motorhead, all right
(Fuck)

Fourth day, five day marathon
We're movin' like a parallelogram
Don't move, the mornin's not a pretty sight
I guess I'll see you all on the ice

I should be tired
All I am is wired
Ain't felt this good for an hour

Motorhead, remember me now
Motorhead, all right
