Does anyone know of a reason NOT to take opiates?

as long as you keep yourself from becoming an addict, no i can't think of any reason not to do opioids

Easier said than done for some. Thats why I prefer the psychological drugs, fuck the physical dependancy. You may have anxiety, etc with amphetamines, but switching between methylphenidate and dextro-amphetamine for me keeps addiction at bay, tolerance low, and withdrawal an undefined word.

I don't see any reason to take opiates, a cup of coffee, and a workout will have you feeling chill and relaxed at the end of the day compared to an artificial one that induces diarrhea when you forget to pay its bill on your system. Fuck my colon exploding, I like it the way it is.

Lol, im high, but fuck opiates.

DarkCode, have you ever tried opiates? im not talking about downing a percocet or two, i mean a full fledged opiate experience? its great. i really find your reasoning lacking simply because opiates are pretty much better than any natural high (exercise, etc) and im sure most people that have tried them will agree. if you are just saying that because of things you have heard about opiates and you have never tried them (which sounds like the case), then dont knock it till you try it.

just curious, what is your opiate experience?

Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet: Opiates cause shallower breathing along with possibly weakened immune system, which can turn a common cold or flu into pneumonia under the wrong conditions. I had personal experience with this back in the mid 80s with an oxycodone addiction. Just not good for the lungs.

I think what DarkCode was trying to say is that opiates have down-sides that a natural high does not (which is true). Personally, I find opiates become boring or even unpleasant once addiction kicks in, but you no longer have any choice at that point.

I am starting this thread to find out others opinions on when it is NOT a good time to take opiates.
I've tried H three times (smoked once, plugged once, snorted once, strong stuff each time).

The nausea, the puking, the constipation, no thank you!

I've had experience with codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and IV morphine after surgery.

In all honesty, it was never addicting for me, was never really pulling in any way. I mean ya sure it was cool to sit back and have music going, dark room, get some odd vivid hallucinations sometimes and then feel so ultra relaxed. But at the same time, FUCK THAT. I don't want to be living life sitting on my ass sleeping, I want to be living my life going out there doing something not on the toilet with hellish diarrhea cause of heroin.

Deal with it, opiate experiences are NOT worth it. Withdrawal and the fact that caffeine buzzes are better and cheaper than it in the long run just goes to show that opiates are good at one thing, pain management post-op, but within 10 years new synthetic analgesics based on chemicals made naturally by our bodies, will be replacing opiates.

i'm glad none of these happen to me

but just lay/sit down, have food in your stomach, and eat fiber/drink a cup of coffee

psh, first and formost, morphine is an endogenous chemical, it is made by cells in the heart, pancreas and brain. What chemicals made naturally by our bodies would you be reffering to? because I can't think of many that fit the bill. It is my opinion that opioids are going no where, and certainly not with in the next ten years. Glad you didn't like your experience, more for me:p

k, you enjoy your caffeine high

to each his own. i myself hate the out of the blue extra adrenaline feel, the cardio/neuro/etc-toxicity, and the twitchy inability to sleep

You shouldn't take opiates recreationally if you have personal or even genetic traits that could lead towards major addiction. Also, driving/flying/boating can be very dangerous if you are under the influence of opiates...especially if combined with other CNS depressants.

I, myself have tried...

Codeine (itchy dumb crap.)
Hydrocodone (great, great high.)
Tramadol (feels like a damn good opiate, even if it isn't one!)
Heroin (excellent, subtle, yet strong.)
Mitragynine (my favorite so far.)
Loperamide (no effects, but it IS an opiate.)
Meperidine (knocked me out, so strong!)
Oxymorphone (too small of a dose to feel anything.)

Smoking (Nicotine) vs. Opiates

Cheers for all the comments!

I just have one question to all those of you that have experienced withdrawal.

How does opiate withdrawal compare to nicotine withdrawal?

This might be a nieve comment, but it seems to me that nicotine withdrawal is nearly as bad as opiate withdrawal and continues to be a problem for most people who quit.

Would anyone like to suggest which would be better to control stress levels? (Opiates, Cigarettes) With the comment I made about addiction in mind.

neither is good for controlling stress levels because stress levels need to be suppressed daily in high-stress people and both drugs -are- addictive.

modes of administration are more important with nicotine because smoking will give you lung cancer but chewing will only give you gum cancer?

i would suggest meditation or re-evaluating one's perspective to control stress levels. it's not really stress, if you mean it in the 'job pressure' kind of way, but the stress response. that can be improved purely by reflection and practice.

however, having experienced 'withdrawals' from daily years-long use of both, i can promise you nicotine withdrawals are almost entirely mental and emotional whereas opioid withdrawals BEGIN with agonizing physical symptoms and for many people INCLUDE mental and emotional problems.

trust me; you DON'T want to become an opioid-dependent drug user. sadly, nicotine is less frowned upon in societies, so you're probably many kinds of safer using that.

i can't stress enough that not using either is better. but opioids are healthier and can be sustained carefully and cheaply for a decade or more... you're lucky you're asking about wholly sustainable drugs; but opioids are more likely to accelerate away from you... whatever you choose, be careful and as moderate as possible. err on the side of inadequate self-medication rather than too much.

Because they are illegal. If your busted, fucks everything up.

That's really the only reason, but put that with "Why use opiates" and you got a damn good case against using heroin.

On a similar note, I think that anyone who says that if they could take it back, that they wouldnt (regarding ever using heroin) is fooling themselves or just been lucky.

Why use opiates when you can get busted, get addicted, et cetera over them? If you just stay clear of them you can still live a happy life, and what I've seen, a happier one. There's no reason to use heroin, and only bad things can come of it.

I, for one, have just been lucky. I still don't have enough humility to stop forever though, but I use on and off.

All the addicts who have died from intentional and unintentional overdoses, and also those who killed themselves by other means, knowing that as long as they lived they would be addicted. That is one HELL of a reason not to take opiates.

The addiction process is very subtle, and can develop gradually over many years. Opiate addiction is a terrible disease, the drugs themselves lose any recreational value whatsoever, and you're left with the formidable task of keeping your opiate receptors constantly engaged just so you can maintain some semblance of normalcy. From what I've read, advanced heroin addiction is a lot like insulin-dependent diabetes...where missing a dose is simply NOT an option.

im surprised no one has mentioned.. dont take opiates if you know you are going to have to drive or operate heavy machinery. i can think of a couple occasions when i was fighting to stay awake behind the wheel.. that shit is scary.

obviously some people do it (and live), but that would be a good time not to take opiates.

if you are trying to figure out the pros and cons of being addicted, just forget about it. yeah opiates are a great addition to life, but too easily one can get carried away.

Ya, but once u cross that line...u dont get tired anymore. The opiates turn and "appear" to give u endless energy....but, if a person just started taking them, or is not addicted yet, they will make u tired... but like I said, at least for me...Once u cross that line they turn around and u are awake, alert, and full of energy!

A few more things came to mind since my earlier post...
Along with many of the things already mentioned, which are basically all true....
a few more thoughts..
By the way, I've earned my stars. 6 Months of H, 6+ months of oxy (crushed, daily 400+mg a day)

Opiates were the last, and final class of drugs that I ever tried. I only say "last" because i've covered them all and there's none left.

I didnt puke the first time, or even the first few, yet did get high for sure.
My initial thoughts were .."thats it?" this is the top of the drug "food chain"?

Call me strange , because I am. But, when I tried H for the first time, it was because I wanted to experience H...and by "experience" I did NOT mean to simply take it and see how it feels.

By "experiening" it, I meant the "whole" thing... Try it, take it regularly, develop a physical depency, go through withdrawel.. I figured this would be approx. a 2-3 month situation.
I dont want to romanticize this too much, but, I kind of felt like DeNiro, when he gained 60 lbs. and learned to become a serious boxer as preparation for "Raging Bull".....oh how cool.
But, having tried all of the other "classes" of drugs prior to this, many of which I had those "WOW" moments, where it was all too much, opiates never got me there...

My basic feeling was.."its not great, it dosnt suck, its ok..
But, I did the "whole" deal as I planned.
Nobody ever talks about the middle ground experiences...I guess because they are pretty rare.

Its usually either..." I tried it and it was SO great, I had to stop it right there, because I knew I would be in big trouble"...
or, that othe story, where it starts small, you find you cant stop thinking about it, eventually take it all the time, become a junkie, lose all of your family, friends, money, etc. etc.

But, sometimes there really is a very non-eventful experience..
I did what I set out to do. deliberately took it everyday, got physically dependent, took careful notes on the whole thing, good, bad, ugly, then said ok, lets go. I'll take a deep breath and be a big boy and close this thing down..

It wasnt part of the plan, but, I sort of cheated my way out....
I had saved a whole bunch of the "bags" that it came in, and there was a drop left in each one.
So, everyday, for about 2 weeks I took one snort. Maybe 2 times a day...
I never felt sick when I did it. and those 2 tiny hits were not enough to get me high.
But, I remember everyday, digging through a bunch of them and scraping out just enough for maybe 1 hit, until i ran out, and that was it...
I was NEVER going out to the "street" to find a contact again.
I got lucky. I managed to get out of it without any withdrawel...
I know this sounds insane, but, I was kinda ppissed off, because I wanted to really go through the whole experience from start to finish. I only got pices of it..

But, some of the things that happened along the way...to make special note of..
and these things didnt happen in any big dramatic way. They were just there, in the backround, and I took note of them.
For starters, I have always had a number of things in life that got me VERY, high..
Girls....meeting them, falling in love (no drug can touch it), the sex (obviously), and everything else.
I started young, got hooked on it, and it was always at the top of my list.

well, during the opiate phase, it was wiped out. I could give a shit about woman....when I would walk down the street, all i would see was "people" NOT woman, and men. Just people.
So, my greatest joy was deleted from my life...

I've been running since I'm 14....it always got me SO fucking high...
gone, deleted..
and, the insidious part was that if I wasnt paying attention like I was, these things all happened on such a subtle level, that you just would never even notice.

I never got near the point of going to "hell" and losing it all....money, friends, etc....I had, at least on the surface, a benign experience. I guess if I kept going for another 6 months- 1 year or something, I would have worked myself to that point. But, what was the point. I saw enough of what I set out to.
I could go on about many more things just like the "woman and running" that I mentioned, but, the point is, that one by one, without you even noticing, everything in your life that ever brought you any "real" joy, deleted..I didnt get there all the way, but, I saw how it evolves.

EVERY drug is SO fucking fantastic the first few times. Look at coke,...FANTASTIC at first until you evolve to the point where you ONLY crash when you do it...
Its all about brain chemistry...

You dont have a choice....Your brain chemistry is what it is, and it will take you where its gonna take you. Period.
The path there is different for each class of drugs, because they play with a different part of the chemistry...
So, you cant do drugs forever. You can only go through the motions. and after you have blown out the receptors that give you the good stuff,...they dont come back...its over....you are basing your actions simply on some great memory of how it used to be..

and while you are doing it, you dont get to do anything else because all of the other good stuff has been deleted.

I'm not saying this as some kind of warning story.. I'm sure it sounds like it though...
I'm just relaying my own, very uneventful, undramatic story...
Its been about a year and I dont think about, or desire it anymore...
I'm getting laid too much to.

I could do the 'choose life, choose a job...' crap from Trainspotting, but basically, like all drugs, opiates make a good servant but a bad master. The problem with opiates seems to be the difficulty in staying in control of them. I think about 10% of people who try opiates recreationally go on to become physically addicted to them. Ask yourself, is 9/1 LONG enough odds to play with? For me (and the addictive dimwit I am) the answer is a simple no, for others, well, we make our own choices. I've seen a lot of the bad side & it scared me a LOT!

Play safe now, y'all!

1. Im pretty sure endorphins means "endogenous morphines", which would suggest that are body does make its own analgesics, which are structural an opiate (if not literally).

2. Having taken 4 caffeine pills daily for 4 years (all through high school) I can say the caffeine "buzz" is not better. And you know what else is funny? I quit smoking cigarettes, and it sucked. Ive been through opiate withdrawal, and it also sucked alot. But caffeine withdrawal from that dose (800mg a day) was debatably the worst withdrawal I had. The headaches became so bad I could not roll over in bed without causing enough nausea to make me puke in a bucket. Opiate withdrawal is absolutely miserable, but I could always take some suboxone and be fixed up enough to get the day. I dont think they make a caffeine detox medicine yet, and frankly, I pray nobody felt what I did that week.

3. Finally, opiates definitely have use besides pain management. If they didnt, there would not be so many threads asking about them, and how to get the most out of them. They carry a stiff penalty for overuse, but some of us can use them without becoming addicted. For many of us they are our drug of choice, and we would not like them if they gave worse buzzes than caffeine or something like that.

Yes, they are risky. Its a double edged sword and can be like juggling flaming bowling pins, knowing you could get burned one day. But not all of us do.

people talk about opiates like its the death of anyone who does them. ive been using opiates for 8 years and never picked up a habit. i can use and stop. i only use pills. i dont shoot up, but i have, and its okay, but not worth the addiction potential. i eat and plug, thats it. i can use for a week and stop no withdrawels. in my experience usin benzos has been far more detrimental to my health than anything besides cocaine. those are two drugs people use alongside opiates and are far more addictive, ive had a problem with both and now can use sporadically, but not everyday. if you have even a little discipline using opiates isnt a problem. stick to a schedule and only use when appropriate, and dont shoot up. im not saying tolerance wont occur. i now take 10x as much to get a good nod, but tolerance doesnt equal addiction. if you have to take opiates for any reason besides pain, you shouldnt take them. needing them is a sign of addiction. and getting sick from abstaining is a sign of addiction.
