Does anybody do barbiturates any more?

I reckon.

I was just saying that among people who considered themselves recreational drug users, I don't think prescription meds were as popular in the 70's as they are now. We were more into the 100% illegal stuff.

Where I grew up (Mich.) friends would trade bags of original translucent white cross amphetamine (or) desoxyn for a baggie of tuinal, Quaaludes for demerol - Everybody's mom & their daughters were getting presrcibed some type of speed or tranq'
Not to mention all the underground shipments & people driving back & forth to the border every week. One guy I knew had 1000 packaged Qualudes every month...just sayin'

yeah for lethal injections

Did you hear about how Teva, who was manufacturing drugs used for lethal injection, either this one or perhaps Darvon, i forget, but they are now refusing to dispense medication to the prison systems because they do not support their product being used for the death penalty.

I used to use fiorcet without caffiene so I have last time was last year or two ago and I useed it for tension headaches...they make you feel kinda drunk...I was on them during an accident and they cop thought I was drunk I was fine but be careful

In the US, phenobarbital is certainly still around. It is used many times in alcohol or benzo detox, and sometimes still used as an anti-convulsant, but usually along with another anti-convulsant drug. It is quite common as a veterinary anti-convulsant, however. Butalbital is also definitely around, in a variety of preparations with APAP/ASA, some with caffeine and codeine, too. It is used mainly for headaches (tension and migraine). Secobarbital I believe is still on the market as a hypnotic, but TERRIBLY rare, and I have certainly never known of anyone with a prescription. Other than that, barbiturates are confined to hospital settings where they are used for sedation, anesthesia, or euthanasia. In such settings, I am fairly sure a number of varieties still exist including secobarbital and pentobarbital, as well as thiopental, but believe there are a number more esp. when it comes to anesthesia.

phenobarbital is still around in germany too (it kind of surprised me), i know this because a friend's mother got in a car accident and sustained a pretty severe headwound. she was given phenobarbital, apparently because it was the only thing that worked against her trauma-induced convulsions/seizures. that is the only time i heard anyone i even remotely know receiving it for medicinal purposes, nevermind as a recreational drug.

Yes, a few states are already switching to pure propofol...

^ A number of states have had a decent degree of success with pure pentobarbital. The thing about the 3 drug cocktail is that in theory, it's rather humane. However, properly administering requires trained medical staff. A lot of states have complete idiots prepping and administering the drugs required for the cocktail. For example, if two of the drugs aren't prepped and administered properly, they precipitate (forgot which ones). I saw an interview with the pathologist that created the 3 drug cocktail and he basically said that the entire idea has been incredibly botched in practice. Pure propofol would work exceptionally well, it's just its very short duration that's problematic. I'd say that pure propofol or pure pentobarbital would be vastly superior to the 3 drug cocktail under any circumstances.

But finally, a drug history thread. Shame I wasn't on here earlier today...

Besides phenobarbital outside of hospital or vet practices, only butalbital is out there here in the Land of Bagged Milk. Butalbital is really tame stuff, IME. When I was very, very new to drugs and naive to every substance, Fiorinal C 1/2 capsules actually gave me a decent buzz. Like I said, I was brand new to using drugs, so even a T3 would give me a buzz. Nowadays, I look back on it and I don't even know how it was possible.

I hate all the bullshit behind the death penalty. I don't support the DP but..I mean...a "highly trained medical team" to KILL someone? Seriously? If I was about to die and they were going to be "humane" I would tell them to quit the bullshit and just shoot me. OR jsut attack a guard and give them no choice BUT to shoot me.

THE BEST is when they use alcohol to sanitze the are of injection. LOL. Like he is going to develop an infection in the next 5 minutes of life he has left.

Sometimes a person under sentence of death get's a last minute reprieve right before or even during the execution. For this reason, they have take all normal safety precautions regarding sterile working, and also for the safety of the guards (in the events of a needle stick or contact with an open wound).

I know a lady (mid to late 40's) that sees the same psychiatrist I do and he gives her 30 Seconals monthly. However, she says that the pharmacy dispenses them weekly for her so that she only gets 7 every week. The only reason I ever got to try secobarbital was because of this lady. She gave me one secobarbital capsule for three alprazolam 1 mg tablets once. I asked her how on earth did she ever get him to prescribe her that drug and she just said that she has really bad insomnia. She said she had gone through trazodone, zolpidem, eszopiclone, diazepam, alprazolam, phenobarbital, estazolam, flurazepam, triazolam and temazepam and none worked well enough to give her a good 8 hours of sleep. She claims that some worked but she always woke up in the middle of the night and wouldn't be able to fall asleep, others just gave her too many side effects and yet others just made her really tired without falling asleep. She said she refused Seroquel, Zyprexa and Risperdal. She also had to do a sleep study before the doctor just gave up and gave her Seconals. Her persistence paid of. Still she says that she doesn't always get the best rest, even with the secobarbital. At best she gets about 6.5 hours of sleep a night, some nights she says that even with the Seconals she'll only get 4-5 hours of sleep.

I bet if I asked her again she wouldn't say no. But I know that she really needs them, so I never bothered to ask after that one time.

Yeah that's a difficult situation, I would leave them for her to enjoy her 6.5 hours of sleep.

Very interesting though, had no idea it was still RX'd.

Getting a barbiturate Rx is essentially like getting Rx thalidomide in this day and age. The docs make damn sure you've exhausted all the other options.

the only barbiturate i've ever seen was some phenobarbital that was given to my friend for convulsions he was suffering from benzo withdrawal in rehab. (he saved one as a memento)

i have done seconal amytal and lame ass phenobarbital but they are rare as shit and hard to find seconal was my fav it was like xanax with more of a happiness to it

The barbiturates I've done are phenobarbital (sucks), butalbital (in Fioricet; it was crap also) and finally secobarbital (this was really nice, but I was expecting a lot more). I guess 1 Seconal isn't enough for a real good barb high, but I still felt wobbly, slightly euphoric and sedated. I wonder how much nicer if I had taken 200 mg (2 capsules). Also it wasn't a red capsule. It was actually orange.
