Television Dexter

Don't get me wrong: I still love the show, enjoyed the season, and am waiting with baited breath for the next one. Lithgow was great, and what the final episode means for Dexter's future actions has already been the result of endless speculation on various boards and threads.

A thought occurred to me the other day as I reflected on this last season and the previous one; they have a kind of thematic unity apiece that I never really appreciated. For instance, I realized that the third season was sort of a a Frankenstein allegory: Harry couldn't deal with the monster he trained--ironically, to keep it under control--while Dexter willingly created a monster that he was unable to control.

The fourth season, though, had the classic elements of tragedy: the hero with his tragic flaw, being ultimately undone by hubris. Actually, he has two flaws: a curiosity that stays his hand when it shouldn't, and a pride that forces him to go full-bore after Trinity instead of tending to his own nest. His family was a weakness, not a flaw, IMO; it's always been the case that heroes are undone most by villains using their loyalties against them.

My two bits.

where in the fuck is my episode 13?

oh wait there's next season.

shit.

what a mind blower. I didn't really get some of the backstory sub plots but I havent been a big watcher, only caught on at Season 3.

I just want to see the fallout of that last bit. Puh-lease!

Yo, i only seen this show a few times but i aint feelin it at all. Now, I kno that theres a good chance that I didnt really get the whole idea becuz of not seeing much of it, so i totaly understand that this is completely just my opinion, without much to back it up other than its just how i feel. I aint knockin none of yall tho for likin this show so plz dont think I am attackin u, Ima just say my thoughts on the idea of the show.

Ima sound pretty stupid for this but its how i feel so w/ever...I feel like alot of these shows just try too hard to be edgy now adays, once u have a idea like, Highschool teacher/meth cook in breaking bad, and it does good and audiences get real into it, then the networks get all like oh lets make a show about another normal life guy who does somethin unexpected, and u get this crap.

Honestly, also I really, really dont put much morality or values judgement into the shows i like or dont like....I enjoy all kind of shit. Murder, drugs, sex, or watever. I aint some kind of freaky anti "bad" things in TV/movies person. I like all kind of movies about the under side of life or shows about the same type of thing. drug addict movies/shows, shows about crimes, killin, gangs, watever. Im sayin, i aint the type of person whose like , OMG!! this show is so immoral, it shows bad things! Na, Nothing like that at all, really dont give a fuck. So I want yall to kno that, before u read my thoughts here and go thinkin that i just dont like it cuz Im some kind of morally conservative person or some shit like that, becuz Im the farthest thing from that.

But IDK, for some reason it just bothers me that its a show about this dude whose a serial killer. Not becuz I think it will make ppl do that, i hate that arguement. I dont think its a bad influence on people, or watever. I just....I dont know, the idea, it just seems far fetched in general, and like its tryin so far to be controversial and edgy that it dont care about picking a topic thats actually just pretty tasteless. wats next, a show about a serial rapist and his normal life against his secret rape life? Becuz when it goes from drug dealers, mafia, prostitues, and all kinda shit like that in these kind of shows, to straight up serial murderers, then it feels to me like they just pushing to come up with somethin that will shock and suprise people and draw in the audience that is gonna be like "oh cool , thats sick and twisted, i LOVE shit like that!"

I been unfortunate enough to know ppl in my teenage years, that would see a show like this, and think its badass and intriguing, and that its cool to be like dexter. Like they wouldnt do it but they would geniunely think it is COOL to be a person living a totally underground secret life doin somethin that ppl see as so horrible, and gettin away with it becuz u carry on this normal ass life on the surface.

and they woudnt dream of bein like dexter or nothin, but just the whole attitude people have when they watch this shit that it aint necessarily bad is weird to me. kinda off thats all. showin it by makin dexter a "good guy" character instead of the usual way a main character who does "bad" things is showed (as a person with flaws but someone who gets a little sympathy, froma mostly neutral point of view) is kind of normalizing it in a way. instead of observin wat the person is doin, and just showin and tellin about this life of "bad" things they live, drugs or crime or w/ever, and just presenting it to the audience but not really takin sides too much, this series seems to be on some kind of "dexter is a nice guy! root for the serial killer ! " type shit. Iunno, it just seems a lil fucked up. they show him in a positive light, thats kinda wat i aint about. At least in the parts I seen, it seems that way to me. maybe im wrong, idk.

And i aint even saying that kind of pro-dexter, "serial killing is acceptable becuz we show him as the good guy" attitude CAUSES somethin...becuz it dont really...nothin gonna happen, it aint gonna make ppl kill ppl....I dont think its corrupting the children, or makin people more open to killing. Its just a show, but jus the way its made and the kind of turnin the serial killer into the hero type dude , is just leavin a bad taste in my mouth so to speak. like I said, i dont feel like its shocking or groundbreaking in the good way that makes people think or really means anything, its just kind of a tasteless, see how far u can push it thing. The difference between somebody saying "Fuck religion" and "Jesus christ was a faggot and a bitch pussy who probably got fucked in the ass by the apostles." Both of them are "shocking" to main stream everyday society type people but one of them is more of a "makin a statement" type of thing and the other one is just sayin obscene shit just for the sake of it, when it just aint necessary at all and dont mean nothing, its just bein unnecessarily disrespectful and shows noooo taste at all.

So its a little bit like that to me , of course not exaclty the same or on the same level, just the whole subject of who dexter is suppose to be and how it seems like they tryin to be too hip or somethin by pickin this but end up just being liike...Ugh....thats just classless. I just aint exactly cool with the idea of somebody doin this bein a acceptable kind of thing that people aint only ok with but think its kinda cool. Iunno, thats just me, it seems fucked up to me that somebody would view this and not be disgusted by makin a serial murderers life seem cool but its just my opinion and why i dont like it, i aint judging nobody who does like it or sayin u shouldnt like it. just for me this show sucks, it really aint even that creative its just takin the secret life plot and putting in a "shocking" hobby as the secret life. its shock value that gets ppl who are about 'deviant' shit all wet in the panties.

I hear what you're saying, but I don't think it applies to (the first season and maybe the second of) Dexter. It was adapted from novels for a start, the story wasn't 'designed' for television. But I guess you could argue that the author was just trying to be edgy in a similar way to how you've described. But I really don't get that impression.

I related a lot to the character in the first season and I found his detached, alien-like perspective of the world to be a refreshing change from the typical sort of garbage that's out there. Also I think the writing, early on, was fantastic.

I really don't think it relies on shock value as much as you think. The split personality of Dexter (forensics specialist/ serial killer) makes for interesting and original situations that IMO are scarcely matched by other "cop shows" out there.

I mean what would you prefer to watch?

CSI?

Personally Dexter is the only show revolving around crime/police work that I've ever been interested in, because it's different, darkly comedic, thought-provoking and the characters are extremely well defined, almost to the point that they become caricatures (Doakes for example).

IDK yo, I never watched CSI before. I aint seen most of those shows on TV that are mad popular like csi or those kind of stuff. My fav. show is probably the sopranos. And i never even finished watchin the whole thing, becuz I aint got cable and my regular TV dont barely come thru, i get like, channel 2 and 5 when the wind blows right. i kno, i didnt even see the whole thing of the show i love the most thats unheard of but w/ever i was just sayin to show u I do appreciate shit that aint all good and happy on the normal side of life.

I hear ur opinions and I think that its probably becuz I aint watched so much of the show and cuz of that my opinion is limited. becuz tahts wat it is, Its a limited opinion based on not seein much so it dont hold much weight eve i kno that i was just makin some comments about how i seem to see the show and if anyone agreed with me. Anyways

Thanks for postin to me in a civilized way lol, i was expectin to catch "Are you fuckin retarded? bla bla bla..." :)

I think part of it is just becuz dexter freaks me out, hes such a weird, ugly lookin mutha fucka and I am judging him cuz of his creepy face a litle bit too lol.

Dexter is one of those shows you have to watch from the beginning.

the favorite part of this show now is officially the opening credits. the suspense is long gone so the rest of the show is just boring now. it's sad, most of the time i prefer a shift to character development but in this show's case i actually prefered when it was more episodic instead of these drawn out story arcs

^He's actually fine. The cancer is in fully remission (that's a very treatable cancer, especially when you catch it easlier) already and is quoted as saying he'll be on time to shoot season 5.

Don't read this if you haven't seen season 1.

My girlfriend and I just finished season 1 on Netflix instant viewing. I definitely enjoyed the show, especially with another person to make off-hand comments to: the darkly humorous writing, most of the characters, and the tension on screen. But I was sure who the Ice Truck Killer was about a minute after they appeared on screen (mostly the prothesis visuals and symbolism and medical knowledge), and was convinced of their relationship to Dexter (due to his age and the strong familial-determinism themes), which I guessed at previously, not long after that. So many of these premium channel and premium channel style shows go for high drama, which has lots of commendable qualities, but their demand for audience perspective shifts on characters and the way their story structure is so tightly wrapped up makes the inner workings of the shows over-visible (though I assume the central plot of season 1 was adapted from the book and finished, and that has something to do with the structure).

We liked it, but I'm the type who's reluctant to invest the time in any TV series, whether I like it or not. Does season 2 keep up the tension and humor and lose some the predictability?

Honestly, it's probably too ingrossing/time-demanding for you to get into the series. If you think you liked season 1 more than you said though, I'd at least give season 2 a shot. It slows in 3 and builds up again in 4.

^haha couldn't tell from your handle.

definitely a favorite and I'm so exited about how season 4 ended. it is going to be so interesting to watch the growth and development of Dexter's family!

okay so Pander and I have watched all the seasons (we are now on the last two episodes of season 4) in the past week and can i just say what the fuck Deb, you're an idiot? Deb is seriously one of my least favourite characters, along with Rita.

I hope season 5 is kick ass. The Prado season was annoying, so far season 1&2 have been the best.

but i agree with DexterMeth (lol!)
this seriously is one of my all time favourite shows

it's all in the voice overs

i also really hate the obi wan kenobi Dad action, kinda annoying guys

While it was sad, I love how his son was born in blood just as Dexter was.

I've been watching this show from the beginning and I love it. <3

SPOILER TAG SKOAT

there might be people behind!

but yeah, i think it will force Dexter to evolve in really awesome ways.
