Incidentally, I wouldn't say everyone has "taken offence" at this thread, it's probably about 50-50. I've read quite a few people in the thread commenting in a similar vein to my original post.

I wouldn't call it misguided M. The people I care about will have taken it in good humour. The unpleasant ones who got upset and launched personal attacks don't really interest me anyway.

If anyone wants to start a thread called "Policemen do a wonderful job prosecuting drug users" then I wouldn't agree but I'd think "Fair enough mate, that's your opinion".

You can't claim to have done something in good humour and then afterwards claim that you only care about the 50% of people who didn't get upset and agree with you. It's not good humour to only care about the reaction of that 50%, that's being an arse.

In fact i think the description of 'contentious' would fit much better to any topic that only 50% of people are not going to find light heartedly amusing than 'good humoured' and by trying to argue this point you've demonstrated that you either lie for effect or else really don't get good humour and the likely reaction of people around you to what you say.

I'm just surprised you actually tried to claim this thread was started in good humour at all, i thought you'd man up and admit you realised before you started that not only were you were being contentious but that lots of people would likely find your opinion disgusting as well.

Of course you can. Good humour doesn't have to mean no-one can find it offensive - otherwise we'd all be listening to Brian Cant for our laughs. The best humour is always going to be disgusting to people such as yourself.
