Death Penalty - for or against

Im against the death penalty in any circumstances. How can you punish murder with murder?
Locking someone up for life with only bread and water is a much better punishment even if it is more costly.

I am from Baltimore. Most of the cops I see are either sitting in the highway median writing speeding tickets, or hassling black people for drug violations.
 
we're from the same town then, so you've never known anyone who got hurt or killed after getting a restraining order against someone who threatened them multiple times and all the police could do was tell the guy to stop it until he actually did something?

I find that to be one of the most irritating things about PC America. the fact that despite the fact that some douche calls his ex 100 times a day telling her he's going to kill himself if she doesn't get back with him or he's going to slash her throat or whatever ridiculous statement he's thinking at the moment the cops here can't do anything at all until he physically harms the girl.
 
I agree with you on that one. I think that simply making verbal threats should be a very serious crime. But then what? The person would get out of jail eventually. If I were being threatened, I would obtain a gun and learn how to use it. I would take hours of training classes and become skilled in using it.

Ultimately though, if a person is determined enough to kill someone, he probably will. I don't know what we can do to guarantee prevention of that crime.
 
thats very true my friend, and since that is the case with many people you end up with overcrowded prisons being run by the top brass in large nationwide gangs.

prison reform is a great idea, if it could be implemented effectively. I just don't think the current populous can be reformed. thus my support for the death penalty. eventually you've got to put your foot down.

your last post is very telling, you'd get a gun and learn to use it. to kill, if necessary, the person threatening you. I give you the fact that the state or federal government shouldn't be the ones who get to put these assholes to death, it should be the right of the family of said assholes victim should they decide they want that, but if they don't the government should do it for them. call it murder if you want, I call it justice.
 
The worst punishment possible would be to lock someone in solitary, in the dark, with a mosquito constantly buzzing around and citing. And tying his arms behind his back so he cant scratch. That or constant celine dion.
 
A significant number of countries which many persons would not consider 'gems' do not use the death penalty as well. I think this might be a superficial argument to make. Perhaps focusing on European countries/ other 'progressive' countries instead of the world as a whole might be a better argument. Then again you enter the Western-centric perspective that progressive Western countries are 'obviously' the best is problematic as well.

In short I think applying 'worldly' arguments when particular cultural/religious/regional etc. are totally short-sighted. Blanketedly labeling countries as good/bad is dangerous.

That said, I'm still anti death penalty.
 
Not sending people back for extended periods for petty probation violalions would help the jails empty out. Community work would be better as well as drug and alcohol treatments.
 
^ agreed, so many people get put in the pen becuase they got slapped with a years or more probation for a fucking .09 dui and then violate it by having alcohol on thier breath when their PO pays them a visit for random drug testing.
