It has now been 11 years since my ordeal with the St.Kilda Police station's Undercover Narcotics Unit who made my life a living hell at rave party's. I haven't spoken publicly about this as yet but I now feel safe enough to speak out about the events that took place.
In the year of 1994, I discovered the wonderful world of raves in Melbourne and it wasn't long before I was lost in the magic of drugs. I made a lot of friends at these rave's, some of them becoming my best mates whilst others had me mixed up with law enforcement and thrown into a world I never knew existed...
His name was Steven and shortly after meeting him at a rave party we began to help each other hook up with party supplies, one day he rang me unexpectedly stating that he was moving flat and needed to sell his dvd collection for some quick cash, having a stable job at the time I accepted and went over to buy what was over 100 original dvd's. A few days later I got a call from the St. Kilda Police station asking me if I had bought stolen goods recently and who I had bought them off, I explained to the sergeant I had no idea the DVD's were stolen and gave the address of Steven as the culprit. I was asked to come down to the St. Kilda police station and give back the goods along with a statement. The first thing I found odd I noticed was the Sergeant I spoke to was the head of the Narcotics Unit and he began to question me where I met Steven and how often I attended rave party's, the sergeant also informed me Steven was a junkie and a homosexual. I asked when the case would go to court so I could claim my lost cash on the goods and the Sergent seemed unwilling to help with that, I left there eventually with an odd sense and confused the the information I was given.
A few days later I had a call from Steven who sounded frantic and he began hounding me to get him a large amount of meth, more so then usual, I no longer wanted anything to do with him and became suspicious he was asking me for drugs as if nothing had happened. I told him I was upset he lied to me selling me stolen goods and that he had made me lose a significant amount of cash and I no longer wanted anything to do with him.
That weekend I attended a rave as usual, and early into the night a mutual friend of Steven's came up to me asking to speak to me in private in my car. I was told to drive somewhere safe so we could talk, he then warned me that Steven had made a deal with the St. Kilda Police station and that the charges for his theft would be dropped if he co-operated with the St. Kilda Undercover Unit as an Informant to catch out some of the big fish at raves and that Steven had in fact named me as a big supplier to the Undercover Police. I was horrified and and asked why he was telling me this, apparently Steven had stolen the goods from someone this guy felt fondly about and then proceeded to talk of the arrangement while of his head in regards to the deal he struck with the police.
That night I discarded my drugs and decided I would sus things out very discreetly, it wasn't long before Steven found me and began to hassle me for drugs, I told him I had none and to leave me alone and walked off however I was no perusing Steven from a distance to see how he was operating, it become very obvious that Steven had an ear piece and wired with a transmitter as he had one finger in his ear whilst talking, throughout the night I saw him hanging out with an older crew and visiting cars that were very typical of undercover police cars used in those days. I found that some of the undercover police he was working with were perusing me throughout the night, again in the same manner with one finger in their ears, pretending to scratch to seem discreet and bending their heads to their chest to talk.
Little did they know that the hunted had now become the hunter and I was walking to quiet areas like the toilets whilst monitoring the police on my tail from the corner of my eyes. I decided to lay low for many weeks but despite this every party I went to they were there on my tail and even following me home after the party and whenever I left my house, of course I never gave sign that I was onto them...
In one of the party's the morning after I was chilling with my friends in the car park watching the car about 20 meters away that was watching me when suddenly some crazy party goer decided to burn some rubber in his vehicle doing burnouts and doughnuts at high speeds with people still walking around, of course just as I suspected the police lights came on from the undercover car that was watching me, which was the best confirmation I got yet. They obviously at that point could not risk being liable for any injuries and felt obliged to blow their cover to stop this drug fueled hoon.
This is where the corruption begin, in the weeks to follow I attended a big bush rave, Earthcore. Soon after setting up tent I noticed 4 cars pull up next to our tent about 10 metres away, and set up camp, I immediately recognized a few of them, I went into our tent and began to watch them from the small fly screened window of the tent, I then saw Steven in the last car, he looked like he was trying to hide from me and the undercover police let him out early before they even parked and Steven disappeared into the bushes, at that point I knew it was going to be one hell of a night.. This police crew was composed of about 7 young informants and 5 undercover police officers posing as ravers, again I recognized some of them from previously when they pursued me on foot and in cars. When they saw me get out of the tent they called me over and the first thing they did was to offer me a bong, I then decided to be sly and play along and accepted so they kept believing I was ignorant to their cause, they then began to ask me what drugs I was taking that night and if I could get them some, I told them I had just arrived there and not yet had the chance to ask around as yet. I watched them throughout the night and saw Steven visit their tent many times from the back entrance, the informants they had were all allowed to smoke bongs.
I then decided I would take it to the next level and approach two of the informants who were walking around the dance floor, I went up and made some small talk and decided I would bump into them whilst dancing so I could get a feel of the hidden transmitters but I would have never expected for what was to happen, I went slamming a bit harder then I anticipated into the informant knocking off his transmitter from his chest and a little black box with a cable fell to the floor, his other informant friend pounced on it grabbing it quickly whilst angrily saying "you idiot" and they stormed off.
Once they knew that I knew I began playing games with them at the party's to follow, by mocking the undercover and sticking my fingers into my ears, making them drive and walk around in circles following me and even approaching the undercover police which I had now come to recognize and asking them "do you even like this music" and getting them angry.
I could now act confidently because I was clean but eventually when I found out Steven's court case had been dropped for the third time and dismissed I went directly to the St. Kilda police Station and confronted the officers who had made my life hell at these a rave party's asking why they let him off. The sergeant responded "I would put away the lot of ya's if I could"
A few months later I read in the newspapers, the St. Kilda police station was under investigation as a large amount of ecstasy had been discovered in the ceiling, obviously a stash that was used at these rave party's to lure potential clients and dealers, hence the corruption. it was never disclosed why it was there, but I know.
That year I decided to ring Steven one final time after the ordeal was over, and told him everything I knew and got a full confession confirming everything I had witnessed, in fact he told me things like the technology they used was very sophisticated, the undercover cars were equipped with audio enhancers that could listen to conversation in occurring in other cars at rave car parks by simply inverting the speakers inside the car to transmit whatever was being said.
Thank you for anyone who read this far, I am glad I finally got this off my chest.
