Confusion about GABA receptors

Well common sense would say yes, it would slow down, but you mentioned that kids of alcoholics have that problem, implying it's a long-term effect.

But that's really, really weird, because you become an alcoholic, yet how would you pass on gained properties through your kids?

That must mean you are talking about alcoholics in the sense of alcoholic = certain set of genes, and not just someone who drinks?

i really doubt you haveNONE of those characteristics (sp)there are people who fit into almost all the catagories ,but they are usually the ones that get full "scolarships" to thefoundation to get things strait ,but even thos people end up sober after some time there ,and report the same things after years of being sober IE: still no cravings,no sighns of the old mind frame coming back

this of coarse is IF they follow the whole program of coarse

i dunno if i buy that "hereditary alcoholism" theory. i think its just a myth perpetuated by AA and scientologists.

for example, if one has never drank alcohol in their life, then it would be impossible for them to be an alcoholic, and conversely, if anyone drinks enough alcohol regularly, they will become addicted. alcohol is just another drug, so the same principals of addiction apply.

yes, some people find alcohol to be very euphoric while others don't, but the same can be said of any other commonly abused drug. some people love cocaine and get hooked, and other people try it and dont like it. same for meth, MDMA, benzos, opioids etc. are these addictions hereditary too? i would just chalk it up to personality and personal preference.

i think socioeconomic factors would have a much bigger role in why children of alcoholics tend to have a problem as well. if what your saying is true, then somehow a child of an alcoholic is already an alcoholic even if they never drink it in their life, and that really doesn't make any sense. if it were true, wouldn't there be some kind of technique to identify this abnormality before the person ever has their first drink?

"Alcoholism runs in families. Even before researchers showed how and why some people are predisposed to becoming alcoholic, simple observation showed that when one or both parents are alcoholic, the children are at risk. Until recently, researchers couldn't be sure whether this familial link was hereditary or environmental or both. Do people drink because they "learned to" at home or do they drink because they are genetically programmed to become alcoholic? While the environmental influence certainly can't be discounted, new evidence strongly suggests that heredity plays a much stronger role in alcoholism than was once thought.



What Twins Can Tell Us

Much of the new evidence comes from comparisons of identical and fraternal twins. Since identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg that divides after conception, both have the exact same genetic makeup and can be expected to be alike in most respects. For example, identical twins are always the same sex, always have the same hair and eye color, and usually reach the same adult height and weight. Studies of identical twins separated at birth and raised in different families have produced compelling evidence of the power of their genetic bond. In addition to their strikingly similar physical development, the twins have remarkably similar tastes, preferences, and interests.

Fraternal twins develop from two different eggs fertilized by two different sperm. Fraternal twins are no more closely related than siblings born separately.

If environment were the sole cause of alcoholism, the rate of alcoholism among twins raised in drinking families should be the same regardless of whether they are identical or fraternal. But if a genetic predisposition were responsible, the rate of alcoholism would be similar for both identical twins, who have exactly the same genes. Studies have shown that when one identical twin is alcoholic, the other is four times more likely to be alcoholic than when one fraternal twin is alcoholic, indicating that genetics play a part in alcoholism.

There have been many other studies aimed at showing whether nature or nurture is to blame for alcoholism. One of the first (Donald Goodwin, 1978) compared 133 sons of alcoholics adopted and raised by nonalcoholic parents to a similar group of adoptees with no genetic history of alcoholism. The sons of alcoholics were three times more likely to become alcoholic than the sons of nonalcoholic parents. A larger study in Sweden (C.R. Cloringer, M. Bohman, and S. And sign me up for the 'bullshit on hereditary alcoholism' list as well. Like any drug, your personal preference dictates it. Environment, I think, does play a big role as well. If Daddy was a massive drinker, the children may have picked it up frm him.

Then again, if my parents had been alcoholics I doubt I would have been touching the stuff.
 
I don't find alcohol euphoric, just better then sober. I do wish I never took a drink in my life though and I think I'm only an alcoholic because I drink so much daily (because I'm such a pussy and I just generally like it, but it's not euphoric as in opiates), which leads me to wonder if it's truly genetic or I'm just scared of life or some psychological stuff. I do believe some aspect of it is genetic though (being as my grand parents are staunch anti-drinkers but both my father and brother are 'secret' alcoholics (as in they hide it, don't drink in public, don't tell anyone they drink, etc) just like me. Maybe it's not a gene that's turned on and off that's specific to alcohol, but more specific to a different factor (such as general anxiety). Anyway, I wanted to thank all who contributed to this thread, apologize for bumping this, and thank the mod's who reopened it...I would have followed it had I know it wasn't closed. Thanks for all the info guys!!
