MJ and BBing, I have come to understand, is a personal preference, period. A little while ago I just finally realized why blazing right before my workouts somewhat slows down my drive and motivation; the answer to that is cannabis' effects on cAMP.
cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) is one of the major energy components in our body along with ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Simply put, I believe it's specifically THC that decreases bioactive cAMP. Now to what degree? I don't exactly know, but it decreases cAMP nonetheless. I'm sure most of you in here know the roles of cAMP, ATP, and protein synthesis when it comes to building muscle, staying lean, and overall metabolism.
Now what's funny is that there is a difference in my workouts when comparing the AMOUNT I've smoked prior to hitting the weights. I have come to enjoy taking a just a hit or two before my workouts. When I don't get domed out of my skull, I feel like some amount of weight has been lifted and I feel somewhat energized. On the contrary if I were to put down a fat blunt or jay, I'd be done for. This is not to say that this is my traditional practice. I actually prefer to not blaze before workouts because of the pharmacology of MJ in that situation.
Too much of a decrease in cAMP, to me, has a significant effect on my reflexes and reaction level and I've come to accept that I just can't pound as hard as I would like to when I blaze up too much. And that is fine because any other time of the day except around my workouts, I am totally down. I've actually come to really enjoy taking little tokes at a time rather than getting down on a fat session, unless in a social atmosphere.
Overall I feel about cannabis just as I do with any other compound that has the ability to alter your perception (whether it be enlightenment, lowering anxiety, euphoria, etc)...
USE IN MODERATION. I think we all can agree that too much of a good thing can be bad. I feel these days people need to just think about how they feel and how their bodies respond to something in particular if it is effecting them in a way that they would rather not feel. Also, like others already stated in this thread, cannabis has absolutely no detrimental effects on their body or gains while it might make others feel totally out of it.
I do think that cannabis and bodybuilding can work together, if you let it. It is an absolute God send for people who cannot get in enough calories a day but it can be a disaster if you let it "takeover" your food options. See where I'm getting at? This is what people sometimes have a hard time dealing with. You must manipulate and control the urges that cannabis might make you want to do or not to do. This is accomplished by one thing and one thing only, will power.
Oh and one more thing, I'm highly interested in some studies concerning the effects of cannabis on hormone levels and metabolism. I've heard it may be estrogenic and that it stimulates metabolism; which may entail its increase in hunger. But at the same time I've read somewhere that it's not metabolism rather it's effect on the hypothalamus that triggers the impulse for hunger. So if anyone has any published, credible studies on these matters I'd appreciate a link for them.
