[Canada] Harper Government Declares Total War on Marijuana

so its like they're teasing us with relics of democracy while tightening their hold on human behaviour...

I'll be leading the riots when the violent revolution finally takes place. I just hope it's during my lifetime :D (I love Karl Marx. which is why I suggested it's going to take a serious amount of corruption (and alienation) to wake up enough Canadians to change anything).

A fellow Marxist i see :D . Ok you can lead the charge on the mainland while I'm down here fighting it in a goddamn bog :p . Granted since we do have a big population in the army from this province a coup might not be a bad idea ;) . But yeah the best way to stir up public hatred for a government and for the public to actually want change is to get as many fucked up laws with as many harsh sentences as possible so it will create a backlash. I am however taking it for granted that Canadians are capable of a backlash or standing up for themselves at all.

You just hit the nail on the head more or less. Just throw the populace a few crumbs now and again so they don't get pissed off and toss you out of office. It's a tactic that has been used time and time again and has been shown to work rather well.

Harper putting in US style drug laws such as mandatory minimums for even Cannabis is not going to wake up the Canadian sheeple though. It's going to take a lot more then that. Hopefully they will try something really dumb like say touching the abortion issue and that MIGHT be enough to hang them.

I agree there might be a global revolution but it will be slow and silent [is already?]. I don't think struggle and violence lead to anything good, it seems from studying the past; despite my suppressed passions... >:D

He's not as bad or as powerful as Bush. but he has those aspirations, it seems... canada it too liberal and insignificant for it to matter that much which gov't is in power. as i see it. maybe im confused and incorrect.

I hate this Harper douche bag. He keeps scamming his way into staying in parliment. He is Canadas version of George Bush. Hes a real d1ck.

That sounds fucking shitt, Bush is notorious, not that this needs to be said, I'm sure everyone knows but I think it is relevant, for being a bigot, an idiot, and to have caused many problems. I didn't think anyone would come about any time soon to replicate his stupidity but that is not the case. I mean...for the most part, he was a joke, rather than a president. Who the hell knows how he got re elected...

Does the U.N.'s recent report saying that the war on drugs has failed, and other routes should be looked into completely ignored? How is this happening? People need to wake up... Fast.

^ for now it is completely ignored. Prohibition supports a lot of institutions in this country. Despite a steady decline in the crime rate in Canada, harsher penalties and tough on crime policy will get passed without too much trouble. If not then a lot of police officers would be out of work, prison system would lose revenue, pharmaceutical companies would lose money. I would think that alcohol use would also decrease leaving the industry crippled. Even without these reasons, there are still so many people here who fear and hate drugs for whatever reason (lack of education).

Prohibition is also a great way to control a certain group of society as well it makes that group a scapegoat for many societal problems. It's a very convoluted issue that I doubt will be sorted any time soon.

A proper drug-education program in elementary/high schools would certainly help future generations to figure out all this bullshit and would probably reduce drug use in the end. If we really want to reduce harm and crime then regulation and legalization is the answer; but in doing so, there would be a big power shift and I don't think the people at the top would enjoy that.

Naw i think violent revolution ala French style would be the way to go for Canada once we get a rope around the neck of the conservatives. One way to make sure they never come back is that there is atleast 6 foot of dirt on them =D

Harper is worse because he actually believes in his own bullshit. If he had his way the death penalty would be back, women would know their place and wouldn't be getting those damn abortions, those damn gays would be in jail instead of getting married, drug users would be in prison doing long sentences because ya know there are no drugs in Canadian prisons 8) and my province where they cant even buy a vote would be carpet bombed probably right after Quebec was :p

He want's a good old fashioned WASP version of Canada more or less. I'm sure if he could get away with it the capitol city would be moved to Calgary :p

why is it so weird? There is money in making a plant illegal that people enjoy using. There isn't much money to be found in the other

I dunno. I think it might be more because of societal and philosophical/personal reasons than just some big money scheme. The gov't could make money off of drugs. Another problem would be what would the hugely powerful and violent drug gangs do when their main source of revenue is gone? How would the gov't handle that? If drugs were legalised NOW, I reckon the result would be nothing short of a civil war, power vacuums in the criminal underworld, possibly even all-out chaos. Seriously. You gotta think of these big historical influences before you wish for some sudden violent change via a revolution or whatnot.

in other words, when referring to drug prohibition in general, historically: its much easier to START something than it is to stop it...

Legalizing drugs wouldnt put big drug syndicates out of business by far, there will always be an underground black market to avoid taxes and etc.. It will cut in on some of their profits but it will still be around. And really, do you really want drugs leagal? Look at what they are doing to cigs, they are taxing the hell out of people where the taxes are more than the cost of the actual cigs..

Legalizing it is just going to fuck everyone over anyway in some way or another and create more laws that will make things way more restrictive. Just like when people are tricked into trading rights for privelages. You cant take away someones rights legally but you can take away their privelages.

It all depends on how it is carried out. Alcohol doesn't cost that much, easily accessible, minors can't get it and there are resources for alcoholics to get clean. Cannabis should be controlled in the very same fashion.

With other drugs, the situation isn't as clear but if a kid wants to try an illegal drug, there's not much in the way of stopping them, whereas if it were regulated like alcohol it would take them a bit more effort.

People still bootleg alcohol and illegal cigarettes are sold all over the place so the black market won't go away. If the government makes a drug too expensive, then the black market will open up, so that would deter them from overtaxing it.

Some chemicals are just far too dangerous for the average person to handle, but these drugs can be regulated in such a way that they are not easily obtained. Legalization would also require education and harm reduction principles would have to be emphasized.

It's a big issue with many points to consider, but in the end, legalization will reduce harm and crime, if only for that reason, every drug should be made legal - the more dangerous drugs could be treated as medicines (opiates, amphetamines and benzos are medicines already) and distributed by a professional. These drugs would still make it to the streets but no one would be going to jail over it at least. Prohibition causes more problems than it fixes (look at alcohol prohibition; that did not go well).

If morphine/heroin were legal, I don't think there would be much demand for extremely potent opioids, that's the only issue I see. You wouldn't be able to sell fentanyl at a gas station responsibly so some form of control is still required. There are even more potent synthetics; perhaps they would just create a small niche in the black market which is still better than how it is now, basically a free for all and who knows what you're actually ingesting as it is not tested or regulated. As well, if I had ample amounts of LSD, mushrooms and mescaline I wouldn't bother with research chemicals.

Portugal makes for a good model of what might happen; and things haven't gone to shit there yet.

BTW the violent revolution is to overthrow capitalism and create equality and freedom. This will not happen without violence, those at the top are too powerful and will always be in control until the citizens wrestle it from them. I don't see why people are so against a violent revolution, it would be exciting and fun, a much needed break from this mundane reality, if nothing else :p

well, people don't like the idea of violent revolution for the simple fact of the matter it never fixes anything and it ruins the lives of regular families trying to get by.

The Russian revolution was despite western propaganda fairly non violent so has it been done? yup and it's happened lot's of times like that. Marxism has to be applied in the right way towards whatever country it is in but Canada given the fact that it's so big would be a fairly poor place to apply any kind of socialism right now. Imagine trying to sell that to that crowd out west? Most of them have not figured out the world is round yet :p

As for Cannabis in Canada well anyone with a clue knows the guys who control alot of it also have a very big influence in much of the government. That's another reason :\

^Stalin's mass murders weren't committed during the revolution. The actual overthrowing of the tzarist regime was very non-violent.

er...how so? they killed the entire Tzar family, even the young girls. and there was a civil war between the reds [revolutionaries] and the whites [tzarists]. i dont see much non-violence there. where did you guys even get that idea?? its not what i was taught and im a Russian Studies major...

also, there was a lot of in-fighting, domination games and very weird russian-style politics during the revolution, within the bolshevik party. also, even though there was no violence they really intimated the other revolutionary party, the mensheviks, into submission. stalin's suppression insanity was probably borne of this type of mentality. what i meant was that the revolution RESULTED in a lot of misery. i dnt see how you can isolate the overthrowing of the tzarists with what came directly after. there is a continuum.

I was talking about the actual October revolution aka the one that happened in st.petersberg or petrograd or whatever ya wanna call it. The civil war was bloody but the revolution itself wasn't really at all. The tsar and his family for that matter got what they deserved more or less. Not like they where saints. As for Stalin and his great terror well that was his own fucked up head. Ever try arguing with a Stalinist? They are royal cunts about this shit 8(

Now back on the topic of soviet canukistan i mean er Canada ;)

you think the tzar's little girl deserved to get killed? I don't think she even understood what was going on probably. but anyway, of course there are reasons these things happened.

back on topic. Yes Stephen Harper is the anti-christ in bland Canadian aspect. He will breathe fire into the colons of all hippies, eventually enslaving all drug users to work in the Alberta oil fields and Northern diamond mines. This is eventual, and which is why we must reenact the Bolshevik revolution, except in a very polite and cold, flat-faced Canadian style, meaning: do nothing at all.

and so it went.

:D

*on a positive note, I don't give a shit about politics, or anything really except my own pleasure and survival. This makes things simpler/easier.
