Harper Government Declares Total War on Marijuana, Possession Arrests Jump 14%

By Cannabis Culture
Thursday, July 21 2011

CANNABIS CULTURE - Statistics Canada today released their annual crime statistics for Canada, revealing a startling increase in the number of simple marijuana possession arrests.

Over 58,000 Canadians were arrested last year for simple marijuana possession, up an astounding 14% over the previous year, and comprising over 54% of all drug arrests in Canada.

...

In addition to the crackdown on simple marijuana possession, the Conservative government has recently proposed unprecedented restrictions to the medical marijuana program. The proposals include the removal of personal and designated production, patient identification, and forcing patients to purchase from government selected, commercial suppliers via the mail.

It's getting nuts here these days. Even 5 or 6 years ago there where hardly any busts but now they seem to be a weekly occurrence. It's fucking sad that the Canadian sheeple are getting fucked up the ass over and over again by these knuckle dragging bastards and that we do nothing about it. Since they have a lovely majority government now we can expect this to get alot worse. Even where i am we used to have a good bit of leeway before because we are way out of upper Canada but now the fuckers are imposing their laws on us! Suddenly bringing up the separation issue doesn't seem like a bad deal though our own arseholes would be no better i am guessing :p

TOTAL war! That's got to be even better than a normal war! God Damn! :D

Why dont they declare war on alcohol & tobacco? Both of those kill more people in a year than all illegal drugs combined.

Damned Harper. We better get the NDP in next election, I don't want to be trodden on for another four years. I'm lucky enough to have been arrested for trafficking before he got his majority...

I saw a reader comment mention something called "Jury nullification" recently. Looked it up and it basically means that a jury refuse to find someone guilty because they think the law itself stinks regardless or not of whether the defendant is technically committed the offence. Maybe raising public awareness of "jury nullification" in western countries might see some juries actually trying it for simple MJ possession cases. It is considered a protected right in most sane democracies.

Used to rely on Canada MOM's .

Haven't for a while - Bugger me they ain't gonna let us enjoy. :\

I guess they have lots of to spend wastefully? Things seem decent in Montreal though, people pretty much smoke wherever they want.

HELLYEAH! lets destroy and kill a harmless plant. After that, lets go track down and kill some turtles, set a few maple trees on fire, and finish by smashing some windows. Any other useless aggression anyone needs to get out of their system toward harmless things?

You can get away with alot here too but it's getting alot more risky lately. Up until as late as 2005 i can remember guys basically selling it with their front door open and you could smell and see the smoke from the road. The cops would occasionally give you abit of a warning if there where constantly a line of cars in front of your house but unless you where real dumb ya got left alone.

I think we should personally declare a war on conservatism and bring back hanging just for these cunts =D

UGH, drug and environmental policy are where me and the conservatives differ. This articles rubs open a wound for me. Canadian politics are sorta fucked right now. Pro legalization NDP would spend the bank away and taxes would go higher than the already crazy high figure. (Go to the US for a couple months, I prefer Canadian society but everything is so cheap down there).

I dunno, the majority thing might make him shoot himself in the foot. As it is, I don't think casual personal possesion is going to get you in a huge amount of shit. Discretion is left to the officer you're interacting with. As long as it's not a pound and you're not being an asshole with a huge record, the standard confiscation is likely still going to be the status quo.

The conservative agenda is simple and scary. Canada is becoming America.

Private Prison, "tough on drugs", crony politics with fat checks for party friends.

The government is out of touch with most of the people. The baby boomers need to die soon to erode the Conservatives strength.

well Canada voted Harper back in and this is what we expected. I fear many other changes are about to occur, such as a complete attack on the RC market from Health Canada; and they have no business doing what they are doing (seizing everything that is suspect). The medical marijuana in this country is also probably going to get more restrictive despite the case in Ontario.

On the bright side of things I think our personal freedom is finally being destroyed in such an obvious way that this whole bullshit super prison monopoly that Harper is going to pull will force people to think twice about who they vote for and what kind of country we want to be. If nothing else it's a fucking waste of money.

As a Canadian it's all bullshit anyway, I've seen systemic racism in our judicial system; that's an even worse problem that will not be addressed. Basically the quality of life for the average Canadian must reach an incredible low for things to change and I think that time is approaching.

What I fear most is a possible ban on all of my favourite chemicals.

I honestly think the best thing that can happen is for Harper to bring in as many authoritarian policies that will affect your average person as much as possible. That way i hope there will be a major backlash against the cons if the Canadian people can actually wake up for abit. But the Canadian people never cease to amaze me when it comes to voting against their own best interests.

but you're all assuming the "average canadian" has the guts to even desire basic freedom. canadians, just like most people nowadays, are fear-driven, self-obsessed people, or "sheeple" as Mr. Android perfectly puts it, who DESIRE a harsh and protective shepherd to guide their mindless assses around. hence the "nanny state".

it might seem sometimes that most people desire things like marijuana legalisation and so on; but a lot of this is because more brave people are more outspoken. you don't notice that the majority of people dont do ANY drugs at all, and HATE hippy/bohemian culture and basically desire totalitarianism.

the amount of young stoners I know that voted conservative is disgusting! I think people should think and read a little before voting. Stephen Harper has a beautiful money making plan and I'm certainly not the only one to notice it; make super prisons and make new laws to incriminate more people and fill these prisons. He is copying failed US policies. It's so frustrating to see young and educated people, especially those who use drugs and believe in personal freedom, still voting conservative.

Canada is changing quickly and the large majority do not even realize it. I haven't kept up to date with Harper's tough on crime bills lately but I'm more than sure his super prison plan is going to happen and those rich fucks will get more money while incriminating more and more non-violent, innocent people.

I just hope Harper isn't smart enough to get all the RC's banned as well to create even more criminals. I guess the trick is to get on the right side of capitalism and then being conservative is great! (Imagine owning these super prisons, or the construction companies that will build them). I bet they get high all the time and laugh about how easy it was to pull this shit off. I would rather believe that Harper is just that smart and wants to make a shit load of money for himself and his buddies than to think this is all done for the image of being 'tough on crime' or some bullshit conservative ideology.

I'll be leading the riots when the violent revolution finally takes place. I just hope it's during my lifetime :D (I love Karl Marx. which is why I suggested it's going to take a serious amount of corruption (and alienation) to wake up enough Canadians to change anything).

violent criminals and sex offenders dont get enough punishment in canada, so i agree with that part of his stance. that is literally the only thing i agree with with harper. otherwise i think everyone is definitely exaggerating the difference between life under harper vs. life in canada under anyone else. the flow of the economy and such is not controlled by one man... its easy to blame a single person, but its counter productive. the best way to be happy is to try it out for ourselves!

Jury nullification has been tried in the US and has failed on a few occasions, unfortunately. It would take an amazing amount of luck to have it work for a drug law. Maybe in Canada, but I still doubt it.
